Viva
The first full-length feature by LA-based artist and filmmaker Anna Biller (The Hypnotist; A Visit From The Incubus), VIVA is "a spot-on spoof of low-grade late 60s/early 70s sexploitation flicks" (Variety) that joyously and faithfully pays homage to the classics of the genre.Written by, directed by and starring Biller, the film is a highly stylized, super-colour-saturated, satirical romp through the kind of camp sleaze and nudge-nudge wink-wink jocularity that will be all too familiar to fans of Herschell Gordon Lewis' "Suburban Roulette", Radley Metzger's "Camille 2000" and Russ Meyer's "Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls". Biller's remarkable attention to detail and painstakingly accurate recreation of the trash aesthetics that make the sexploitation genre so enjoyable have led to Fangoria magazine describing VIVA as "incredible, experimental, hilarious and hotter than hell in June? a film that needs to be seen by any self-respecting trash movie enthusiast."Biller stars as Barbi, a voluptuous, bored suburban housewife with a workaholic husband, Rick (Chad England), who, although perfect in most ways is indifferent to her physical and emotional needs. To get through the monotony of her days, Barbi turns to the companionship of her wealthy, swinging neighbours, Sheila (Bridget Brno) and Mark (Jared Sanford). It's not long before both couples decide to split up, prompting the newly liberated Sheila to drag Barbi headlong into the middle of the burgeoning sexual revolution. Changing her name to Viva, the once innocent housewife embarks on a wild ride in search of love and adventure. It's a journey that takes her into a world full of new experiences, from bisexual liaisons to psychedelic, drug-fuelled orgies and from bohemian nudist colonies to high-class brothels.Looking like a lost film from the late 1960s, VIVA is a fun and loving tribute to the pre-porn era of cinema, when copies of "Playboy" could be found alongside "Time" magazine on the coffee tables of gaudily decorated living rooms all across America. For fans of B-movie exploitation cinema, kinky softcore, high-camp comedy and all things retro, VIVA is a must. Ranked 4.43 / 5 | 19859 views | 0 comments

Have you ever wondered how to prepare matzo ball soup, challah, beef brisket, chopped liver, or potato knishes?
All are featured in "Eat! Something Already," a new cookbook published by Duluth's Temple Israel. The 190-page booklet features more than 100 traditional recipes from members of the Twin Ports Jewish community, including appetizers, desserts, side dishes, main courses, soups and salads, breads, and holiday specialties.
Temple Israel says the cookbook features easy-to-follow directions that will gide even the most novice cook in preparing meals that have been handed down from the ?old country.?
Copies are available for purchase at $20 each, plus $6 for postage and handling. Cookbook orders should be sent to: Cookbooks, Temple Israel, 1602 East Second Street, Duluth, Minnesota 55812. ?
WASHINGTON (AP) ? The top leaders in both parties on the House and Senate Agriculture committees have agreed to a one-year extension of the 2008 farm bill that expired in October, a move that could head off a possible doubling of milk prices next month.
Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Debbie Stabenow indicated that the House could vote on the extension as early as Sunday evening, though House leaders have not yet agreed to put it on the floor. In addition to the one-year extension that has the backing of the committees, the House GOP is also considering two other extension bills ? a one-month extension and an even smaller bill that would simply extend dairy policy that expires Jan. 1.
Expiration of those dairy programs could mean higher prices at the grocery store within a few weeks. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said Americans face the prospect of paying $7 for a gallon of milk if the current dairy program lapsed and the government returned to a 1948 formula for calculating milk price supports.
A spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner said Sunday afternoon that Republican leaders had not decided how they would proceed on the farm extension. Boehner has pushed back on passage of a new five-year farm bill for months, saying there were not enough votes to bring it to the House floor after the House Agriculture Committee approved it in July. The Senate passed its version of a farm bill in June.
The prospect of the higher milk prices has motivated some action. The bipartisan extension also includes disaster assistance to farmers affected by a lingering drought this year, along with extensions to other farm programs that expired in October.
Instead of just extending current dairy policy, the extension bill includes an overhaul of dairy programs that was in both the Senate and House committee bills. The new dairy programs include a new, voluntary insurance program for dairy producers. Those who choose that new program would also have to participate in a market stabilization program that could dictate production cuts when oversupply drives down prices ? an idea that hasn't gone over well with Boehner.
In July, he called the current dairy program "Soviet-style" and said the new program would make it even worse. Large food companies that process and use dairy products have backed Boehner, saying the program could limit milk supplies and increase their costs.
Stabenow blamed Boehner for getting to the point where an extension is the only option. "The lack of action by the House Republican leadership has put us in a situation where we risk serious damage to our economy unless we pass a temporary extension," she said.
One of the reasons Boehner has balked at bringing up a farm bill is disagreement in his caucus over how much money should be cut from food stamps, which make up roughly 80 percent of the half-trillion-dollar bill's cost over five years. House Agriculture Chairman Frank Lucas, R-Okla., has unsuccessfully pushed his leadership for months to move on the legislation despite the disagreement over food aid.
On Sunday, Lucas said he hoped the extension would pass both chambers quickly as GOP leadership mulled their options.
"It is not perfect, no compromise ever is, but it is my sincere hope that it will pass the House and Senate and be signed by the president by January 1," he said.

Global Warming proven a Global Scam
UN Blowback: More Than 650 International Scientists Dissent Over Man-Made Global Warming Claims
Study: Half of warming due to Sun! ?Sea Levels Fail to Rise? ? Warming Fears in ?Dustbin of History?
POZNAN, Poland - The UN global warming conference currently underway in Poland is about to face a serious challenge from over 650 dissenting scientists from around the globe who are criticizing the climate claims made by the UN IPCC and former Vice President Al Gore. Set for release this week, a newly updated U.S. Senate Minority Report features the dissenting voices of over 650 international scientists, many current and former UN IPCC scientists, who have now turned against the UN. The report has added about 250 scientists (and growing) in 2008 to the over 400 scientists who spoke out in 2007. The over 650 dissenting scientists are more than 12 times the number of UN scientists (52) who authored the media hyped IPCC 2007 Summary for Policymakers.
The U.S. Senate report is the latest evidence of the growing groundswell of scientific opposition rising to challenge the UN and Gore. Scientific meetings are now being dominated by a growing number of skeptical scientists. The prestigious International Geological Congress, dubbed the geologists? equivalent of the Olympic Games, was held in Norway in August 2008 and prominently featured the voices and views of scientists skeptical of man-made global warming fears. [See Full report Here: & See: Skeptical scientists overwhelm conference: '2/3 of presenters and question-askers were hostile to, even dismissive of, the UN IPCC' ]
Full Senate Report Set To Be Released in the Next 24 Hours ? Stay Tuned?
A hint of what the upcoming report contains:
?I am a skeptic?Global warming has become a new religion.? ? Nobel Prize Winner for Physics, Ivar Giaever.
?Since I am no longer affiliated with any organization nor receiving any funding, I can speak quite frankly?.As a scientist I remain skeptical.? - Atmospheric Scientist Dr. Joanne Simpson, the first woman in the world to receive a PhD in meteorology and formerly of NASA who has authored more than 190 studies and has been called ?among the most preeminent scientists of the last 100 years.?
Warming fears are the ?worst scientific scandal in the history? When people come to know what the truth is, they will feel deceived by science and scientists.? ? UN IPCC Japanese Scientist Dr. Kiminori Itoh, an award-winning PhD environmental physical chemist.
?The IPCC has actually become a closed circuit; it doesn?t listen to others. It doesn?t have open minds? I am really amazed that the Nobel Peace Prize has been given on scientifically incorrect conclusions by people who are not geologists,? ? Indian geologist Dr. Arun D. Ahluwalia at Punjab University and a board member of the UN-supported International Year of the Planet.
?The models and forecasts of the UN IPCC ?are incorrect because they only are based on mathematical models and presented results at scenarios that do not include, for example, solar activity.? ? Victor Manuel Velasco Herrera, a researcher at the Institute of Geophysics of the National Autonomous University of Mexico
?It is a blatant lie put forth in the media that makes it seem there is only a fringe of scientists who don?t buy into anthropogenic global warming.? ? U.S Government Atmospheric Scientist Stanley B. Goldenberg of the Hurricane Research Division of NOAA.
?Even doubling or tripling the amount of carbon dioxide will virtually have little impact, as water vapour and water condensed on particles as clouds dominate the worldwide scene and always will.? ? . Geoffrey G. Duffy, a professor in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering of the University of Auckland, NZ.
?After reading [UN IPCC chairman] Pachauri?s asinine comment [comparing skeptics to] Flat Earthers, it?s hard to remain quiet.? ? Climate statistician Dr. William M. Briggs, who specializes in the statistics of forecast evaluation, serves on the American Meteorological Society?s Probability and Statistics Committee and is an Associate Editor of Monthly Weather Review.
?For how many years must the planet cool before we begin to understand that the planet is not warming? For how many years must cooling go on?? ? Geologist Dr. David Gee the chairman of the science committee of the 2008 International Geological Congress who has authored 130 plus peer reviewed papers, and is currently at Uppsala University in Sweden.
?Gore prompted me to start delving into the science again and I quickly found myself solidly in the skeptic camp?Climate models can at best be useful for explaining climate changes after the fact.? ? Meteorologist Hajo Smit of Holland, who reversed his belief in man-made warming to become a skeptic, is a former member of the Dutch UN IPCC committee.
?Many [scientists] are now searching for a way to back out quietly (from promoting warming fears), without having their professional careers ruined.? ? Atmospheric physicist James A. Peden, formerly of the Space Research and Coordination Center in Pittsburgh.
?Creating an ideology pegged to carbon dioxide is a dangerous nonsense? The present alarm on climate change is an instrument of social control, a pretext for major businesses and political battle. It became an ideology, which is concerning.? - Environmental Scientist Professor Delgado Domingos of Portugal, the founder of the Numerical Weather Forecast group, has more than 150 published articles.
?CO2 emissions make absolutely no difference one way or another?.Every scientist knows this, but it doesn?t pay to say so?Global warming, as a political vehicle, keeps Europeans in the driver?s seat and developing nations walking barefoot.? ? Dr. Takeda Kunihiko, vice-chancellor of the Institute of Science and Technology Research at Chubu University in Japan.
?The [global warming] scaremongering has its justification in the fact that it is something that generates funds.? ? Award-winning Paleontologist Dr. Eduardo Tonni, of the Committee for Scientific Research in Buenos Aires and head of the Paleontology Department at the University of La Plata. # #
In addition, the report will feature new peer-reviewed scientific studies and analyses refuting man-made warming fears and a heavy dose of inconvenient climate developments. (See Below: Study: Half of warming due to Sun! ?Sea Levels Fail to Rise? ? Warming Fears in ?Dustbin of History?)
The Senate Minority Report is an update of 2007?s blockbuster U.S. Senate Minority Report of over 400 dissenting scientists. See here: This new report will contain the names, quotes and analyses of literally hundreds of additional international scientists who publicly dissented from man-made climate fears in just 2008 alone. The chorus of scientific voices skeptical grow louder as a steady stream of peer-reviewed studies, analyses and real world data challenge the UN and former Vice President Al Gore?s claims that the ?science is settled? and there is a ?consensus.? The original 2007 U.S. Senate report is available here: Full Report Set To Be Released in the Next 24 Hours ? Stay Tuned?
Meanwhile, while the UN climate conference is in session here in Poznan, the bad scientific news for promoters of man-made climate alarm just keeps rolling in. Below is a very small sampling of very inconvenient developments for Gore, the United Nations, and their promoters in the mainstream media. Peer-reviewed studies, analyses, and prominent scientists continue to speak out to refute climate fears. The data presented below is just from the past week.

Peer-reviewed study: Half of recent warming was solar! ? December 10, 2008
Excerpt: In this dose of peer-reviewed skeptical climatological literature, we follow Climate Research News. The blog was intrigued by a new article in Geophysical Research Letters that was accepted on Friday, December 5th. Eichler, A., S. Olivier, K. Henderson, A. Laube, J. Beer, T. Papina, H. W. G?ggeler, and M. Schwikowski: Temperature response in the Altai region lags solar forcing ? Recall that the Siberian Altai Mountains are found at the intersection of Russia, China, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan. The authors looked at 750 years worth of the local ice core, especially the oxygen isotope. They claim to have found a very strong correlation between the concentration of this isotope (i.e. temperature) on one side and the known solar activity in the epoch 1250-1850. Their data seem to be precise enough to determine the lag, about 10-30 years. It takes some time for the climate to respond to the solar changes. It seems that they also have data to claim that the correlation gets less precise after 1850. They attribute the deviation to CO2 and by comparing the magnitude of the forcings, they conclude that ?Our results are in agreement with studies based on NH temperature reconstructions [Scafetta et al., 2007] revealing that only up to approximately 50% of the observed global warming in the last 100 years can be explained by the Sun.? Well, the word ?only? is somewhat cute in comparison with the ?mainstream? fashionable ideology. The IPCC said that they saw a 90% probability that ?most? of the recent warming was man-made. The present paper would reduce this figure, 90%, to less than 50% because the Sun itself is responsible for 1/2 of the warming and not the whole 50% of the warming could have been caused by CO2 because there are other effects, too. Note that if 0.3 ?C or 0.4 ?C of warming in the 20th century was due to the increasing CO2 levels, the climate sensitivity is decisively smaller than 1 ?C. At any rate, the expected 21st century warming due to CO2 would be another 0.3-0.4 ?C, and this time, if the solar activity contributes with the opposite sign, these two effects could cancel. Even if you try to stretch these numbers a little bit ? but not unrealistically ? you have to become sure that the participants of the Poznan conference are lunatics.

Excerpt: Based on analysis by William Chapman, author of The Cryosphere Today website, graciously prepared an analysis of the dates of the minimum and maximum Arctic sea ice coverage since 1979.
Oscillation Rules as the Pacific Cools ? December 9, 2008 Excerpt: A cool wedge of lower-than-normal sea-surface heights continues to dominate the tropical Pacific, ringed by a horseshoe of warmer waters. The continuation of this long-term cool phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation stacks the odds against a wetter-than-average winter/spring in the southwestern United States. The latest image of sea-surface height measurements from the U.S./French Jason-1 oceanography satellite shows the Pacific Ocean remains locked in a strong, cool phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, a large, long-lived pattern of climate variability in the Pacific associated with a general cooling of Pacific waters. [?] Sea-surface temperature satellite data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration mirror Jason sea-surface height measurements, clearly showing a cool Pacific Decadal Oscillation pattern, as seen at: http://www.cdc.noaa.gov/map/images/sst/sst.anom.gif . ?This multi-year Pacific Decadal Oscillation ?cool? trend can cause La Ni?a-like impacts around the Pacific basin,? said Bill Patzert, an oceanographer and climatologist at NASA?s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. [?] This cool phase will likely persist this winter and, perhaps, beyond.
Report: Sea Level rise ?has stumbled since 2005? ? Meteorologist Anthony Watts ? December 5, 2008 Excerpt: We?ve been waiting for the UC web page to be updated with the most recent sea level data. It finally has been updated for 2008. It looks like the steady upward trend of sea level as measured by satellite has stumbled since 2005. The 60 day line in blue tells the story. From the University of Colorado web page: ?Long-term mean sea level change is a variable of considerable interest in the studies of global climate change. The measurement of long-term changes in global mean sea level can provide an important corroboration of predictions by climate models of global warming. Long term sea level variations are primarily determined with two different methods.? ? Yes, I would agree, it is indeed a variable of considerable interest. The question now is, how is it linked to global climate change (aka global warming) if CO2 continues to increase, and sea level does not?
Peer-Reviewed Study: Recent worldwide land warming? NOT ?a direct response to increasing greenhouse gases (GHGs) over land? ? WorldClimateReport.com ? December 3, 2008 ?Rethinking Observed Warming?? Key quote: ?Evidence is presented that the recent worldwide land warming has occurred largely in response to a worldwide warming of the oceans rather than as a direct response to increasing greenhouse gases (GHGs) over land.?
Alert: 2008 will be coolest year of the decade!- December 5, 2008 Excerpt: This year is set to be the coolest since 2000, according to a preliminary estimate of global average temperature that is due to be released next week by the Met Office. The global average for 2008 should come in close to 14.3C, which is 0.14C below the average temperature for 2001-07. [Note: For evidence of the panic apparently gripping the promoters of man-made climate fear, read the quotes in the article from the warming partisans absolutely assuring everyone that cool temperatures are ?absolutely not" evidence that global warming is on the wane. Those same voices are usually absent when it comes to linking heat waves to global warming. ]
Flashback: Global Cooling? ? ?Thirty years of warmer temperatures go poof? ? National Post ? October 20, 2008
Report: NASA?s James Hansen ?adjusts? a cooling trend into a warming trend ? December 9, 2008 Excerpt: ?[H]ere is what the data looks like before and after NASA GISS adjusts it. These are the USHCN ?raw? and ?homogenized? data plots from the GISTEMP website. The before and after is quite something to behold. ? What was down, is now up.? ?How not to measure temperature, part 79?
Geophysist: ?It is time to file this theory in the dustbin of history? ? ?Alarmists are in denial and running for cover?- Washington Times
By Geophysicist Dr. David Deming, associate professor of arts and sciences at the University of Oklahoma who has published numerous peer-reviewed research articles. Excerpt: Environmental extremists and global warming alarmists are in denial and running for cover. Their rationale for continuing a lost cause is that weather events in the short term are not necessarily related to long-term climatic trends. But these are the same people who screamed at us each year that ordinary weather events such as high temperatures or hurricanes were undeniable evidence of imminent doom. Now that global warming is over, politicians are finally ready to enact dubious solutions to a non-existent problem. [?] To the extent global warming was ever valid, it is now officially over. It is time to file this theory in the dustbin of history, next to Aristotelean physics, Neptunism, the geocentric universe, phlogiston, and a plethora of other incorrect scientific theories, all of which had vocal and dogmatic supporters who cited incontrovertible evidence. Weather and climate change are natural processes beyond human control. To argue otherwise is to deny the factual evidence.
Climate Chancellor? No More ? Der Spiegel Excerpt: Angela Merkel is facing withering criticism for remarks she made on Monday that seemed to back away from her earlier commitment to tackling climate change.
Alert: Under the Weather: Internal Report Says U.N. Climate Agency Rife With Bad Practices ? Fox News ? December 4, 2008
Excerpt: As more than 10,000 delegates and observers gather in Poznan, Poland, to discuss the next phase in the battle against ?climate change,? a U.N. agency at the center of that hoopla badly needs to do some in-house weather-proofing. [?] But the WMO, the $80 million U.N. front-line agency in the climate change struggle, and the source for much of the world?s information in the global atmosphere and water supply, has serious management problems of its own, despite its rapidly expanding global ambitions. The international agency has been sharply criticized by a U.N. inspection unit in a confidential report obtained by FOX News, for, among other things, haphazard budget practices, deeply flawed organizational procedures, and no effective oversight by the 188 nations that formally make up its membership and dole out its funds. The inspection was carried out by a member of the United Nations Joint Inspection Unit (JIU), a small, independent branch of the U.N. that reports to the General Assembly and is mandated to improve the organization?s efficiency and coordination through its inspection process. [?] WMO did not respond to a series of questions from FOX News regarding its future programs, sent on the eve of the Poznan meeting.
16-year-old suggests sheep dung can help save planet Card business has really dung good ? Daily Post North WalesExcerpt: The company makes its products at the Twll Golau Papermill in Aberllefenni Slate Quarry using sustainable fuel and materials. Every sheet of paper is made from recycled materials, including sheep dung, waste paper and discarded rags, using processes designed to affect the natural environment as little as possible. [?] Katie 16, from Tal-y-Bont, Conwy, was appointed to help spread the word on how Wales can reduce its carbon footprint and is urging other North Wales businesses to follow Creative Paper Wales? example and adopt innovative approaches to the design and manufacture of products and the delivery of services.
Lord Christopher Monckton: ?Companies could be sued over climate change? Excerpt: The alarmist faction knows that, if it were to bring a case against a corporation whose executives were not minded merely to believe in the extremist presentation of ?global warming? just because it is temporarily in fashion, they would lose. The case of Dimmock v. Secretaries of State for Education and for the Environment in the UK in 2007 was a very clear warning. The UK Government threw all of the resources of the taxpayer and of the Meteorological Office at the case, attempting to defend Al Gore?s sci-fi comedy horror movie against the plaintiff?s allegation that it was serially and seriously inaccurate. The Government failed and was humiliated. The judge, having heard both sides, said bluntly of Al Gore, and particularly of his unscientific allegation that sea level was about to rise by 20 feet, that ?the Armageddon scenario that he depicts is not based on any scientific view?. A few more judgments like that and the ?global warming? fantasy would rapidly collapse. End of scare.
OOPS, We Forgot Siberia! (M4GW) - Weather Stations in Coldest parts No Longer Reporting
Excerpt: The thing that these skewed chart never take into account is that when the Soviet Union fell in 1990 the number of reporting weather stations went form a high of 15,000 in 1970 to 5,000 in 2000. This takes some of the coldest places on the planet out of the equation like Siberia. # #

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party is set to win a parliamentary election on January 22 although the popularity of a far-right party opposed to Palestinian statehood is growing, polls showed on Friday.
Two out of three surveys showed the right-wing Likud losing voters to political newcomer Naftali Bennett's religious party Bayit Yehudi (Jewish Home)and to a fractured center-left bloc.
All still predicted a strong right-wing coalition emerging in the 120-seat parliament, which would assure Netanyahu another term.
The daily Yedioth Ahronoth published a poll with Likud winning 33 seats, four less than a month ago. A poll in the Jerusalem Post showed Likud fell to 34, down from 39 just two weeks ago. A survey by Maariv said Likud held ground at 37.
Without a majority in parliament, Likud would have to join forces with other parties to form a government. Netanyahu could choose Bennett and ultra-Orthodox religious parties or team up with members of the center-left bloc.
The left-leaning Labor party remained in second place in all the polls, winning 17 or 18 seats.
Bennett's party platform rejects a two-state solution with the Palestinians and is staunchly in favor of settlement building in the occupied West Bank - an issue which has stalled peace talks.
All the polls show him on an upward trend, winning between 12 and 14 seats.

BEIJING (AP) ? China's new communist leaders are increasing already tight controls on Internet use and electronic publishing following a spate of embarrassing online reports about official abuses.
The measures suggest China's new leader, Xi Jinping, and others who took power in November share their predecessors' anxiety about the Internet's potential to spread opposition to one-party rule and their insistence on controlling information despite promises of more economic reforms.
"They are still very paranoid about the potentially destabilizing effect of the Internet," said Willy Lam, a politics specialist at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. "They are on the point of losing a monopoly on information, but they still are very eager to control the dissemination of views."
This week, China's legislature took up a measure to require Internet users to register their real names, a move that would curtail the Web's status as a freewheeling forum to complain, often anonymously, about corruption and official abuses. The legislature scheduled a news conference Friday to discuss the measure, suggesting it was expected to be approved.
That comes amid reports Beijing might be disrupting use of software that allows Web surfers to see sites abroad that are blocked by its extensive Internet filters. At the same time, regulators have proposed rules that would bar foreign companies from distributing books, news, music and other material online in China.
Beijing promotes Internet use for business and education but bans material deemed subversive or obscene and blocks access to foreign websites run by human rights and Tibet activists and some news outlets. Controls were tightened after social media played a role in protests that brought down governments in Egypt and Tunisia.
In a reminder of the Web's role as a political forum, a group of 70 prominent Chinese scholars and lawyers circulated an online petition this week appealing for free speech, independent courts and for the ruling party to encourage private enterprise.
Xi and others on the party's ruling seven-member Standing Committee have tried to promote an image of themselves as men of the people who care about China's poor majority. They have promised to press ahead with market-oriented reforms and to support entrepreneurs but have given no sign of support for political reform.
Communist leaders who see the Internet as a source of economic growth and better-paid jobs were slow to enforce the same level of control they impose on movies, books and other media, apparently for fear of hurting fledgling entertainment, shopping and other online businesses.
Until recently, Web surfers could post comments online or on microblog services without leaving their names.
That gave ordinary Chinese a unique opportunity to express themselves to a public audience in a society where newspapers, television and other media are state-controlled. The most popular microblog services say they have more than 300 million users and some users have millions of followers reading their comments.
The Internet also has given the public an unusual opportunity to publicize accusations of official misconduct.
A local party official in China's southwest was fired in November after scenes from a videotape of him having sex with a young woman spread quickly on the Internet. Screenshots were uploaded by a former journalist in Beijing, Zhu Ruifeng, to his Hong Kong website, an online clearing house for corruption allegations.
Some industry analysts suggest allowing Web surfers in a controlled setting to vent helps communist leaders stay abreast of public sentiment in their fast-changing society. Still, microblog services and online bulletin boards are required to employ censors to enforce content restrictions. Researchers say they delete millions of postings a day.
The government says the latest Internet regulation before the National People's Congress is aimed at protecting Web surfers' personal information and cracking down on abuses such as junk e-mail. It would require users to report their real names to Internet service and telecom providers.
The main ruling party newspaper, People's Daily, has called in recent weeks for tighter Internet controls, saying rumors spread online have harmed the public. In one case, it said stories about a chemical plant explosion resulted in the deaths of four people in a car accident as they fled the area.
Proposed rules released this month by the General Administration of Press and Publications would bar Chinese-foreign joint ventures from publishing books, music, movies and other material online in China. Publishers would be required to locate their servers in China and have a Chinese citizen as their local legal representative.
That is in line with rules that already bar most foreign access to China's media market, but the decision to group the restrictions together and publicize them might indicate official attitudes are hardening.
That comes after the party was rattled by foreign news reports about official wealth and misconduct.
In June, Bloomberg News reported that Xi's extended family has amassed assets totaling $376 million, though it said none was traced to Xi. The government has blocked access to Bloomberg's website since then.
In October, The New York Times reported that Premier Wen Jiabao's relatives had amassed $2.7 billion since he rose to national office in 2002. Access to the Times' Chinese-language site has been blocked since then.
Previous efforts to tighten controls have struggled with technical challenges in a country with more than 500 million Internet users.
Microblog operators such as Sina Corp. and Tencent Ltd. were ordered in late 2011 to confirm users' names but have yet to finish the daunting task.
Web surfers can circumvent government filters by using virtual private networks ? software that encrypts Web traffic and is used by companies to transfer financial data and other sensitive information. But VPN users say disruptions that began in 2011 are increasing, suggesting Chinese regulators are trying to block encrypted traffic.
Curbs on access to foreign sites have prompted complaints by companies and Chinese scientists and other researchers.
In July, the American Chamber of Commerce in China said 74 percent of companies that responded to a survey said unstable Internet access "impedes their ability to do business."
Chinese leaders "realize there are detrimental impacts on business, especially foreign business, but they have counted the cost and think it is still worthwhile," said Lam. "There is no compromise about the political imperative of controlling the Internet."
With the salary cap increasing by only a little in 2013, it?s safe to say that the franchise tags will increase by only a little, too.
Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the NFL distributed at the league meetings in December the tentative franchise tenders for 2013.
For quarterbacks, the 2012 tender will be $14.6 million.? It was $14.4 million in 2012.
For running backs, the 2012 tender will be $8.0 million.? It was $7.7 million in 2011.
For receivers, it will be $10.3 million, up from $9.6 million.
For tight ends, the number climbs from $5.4 million to $5.9 million.
For offensive linemen (yes, they?re all jumbled together regardless of whether they play center, guard, or tackle), the franchise tender climbs to $9.6 million from $9.4 million.
For defensive ends, the $10.6 million tender in 2012 becomes $10.9 million in 2013.
For defensive tackles, the franchise tender will be $8.3 million, up from $7.9 million the prior year.
For linebackers, the number moves to $9.4 million in 2013 from $8.8 million in 2012.
For cornerbacks, the tender remains roughly the same, at $10.6 million.
For safeties, the new number is $6.7 million; last year it was $6.2 million.
For kickers and punters, the franchise number of $2.5 million from 2012 increases to $2.9 million.
Last year, the first under the new CBA, the franchise numbers dropped dramatically, even though the cap went up slightly.? The reduction comes from a new formula that takes the value of franchise tags for the last five years, adds them up, divides them by the total value of the salary cap for the last five years, and multiplies the resulting percentage by the salary cap for the current year.? So the number is ultimately driven by a percentage of the cap, not by what the highest-paid players at each position make.? Eventually, the franchise tags will settle in as a fixed percentage of the salary cap, remaining the same each year and only rising based on how much the cap rises.
For some players, the tag becomes higher because the franchise tag rules guarantee the greater of the standard tag or 120 percent of the player?s cap number from the prior year.

Offline is the New Online: How a Fitness Company Can Improve their Online Marketing Offline
By Steve Mehr, CEO of WebShark360
The health and fitness industry is highly competitive, much like the world of internet marketing. These days, internet users are savvy surfers who can spot traditional marketing tactics a mile away. According to Google, only 25% of advertising results in click throughs from internet visitors. That means 75% of traffic comes organically. But how do you increase your internet traffic? Try thinking outside of the box and expanding your online marketing to include offline efforts.
Offline marketing and online marketing does not need to be mutually exclusive. In fact, in 2013, marketing streams will start to merge and businesses will see a definite boost from merging the two marketing streams. To gain that leg up over your competitors, abandon the techniques the rest of your industry is using. Instead, position yourself as a leader and expand your marketing efforts in an intelligent way.
Market Offline to Boost Online Efforts
The internet is a big place, but advertisements for fitness products and health companies are a dime a dozen. They?re usually focusing on miracle pills, diets, and companies claiming that using one trick, you too can obtain magic results. Do you want to run your business as a scam and attempt to trick consumers into using your products? Instead, try branding your company in a different manner. Step out of the shadowy generic ranks of fitness marketers and define who your company is and what your product stands for. Try using these offline tactics to reach your audience and build engagement.
Throw an event to publicize your products and services to online industry specialists. Do you have a new workout video to market, a new gym, or other new product?
? Throw an event to publicize your products and services to online industry specialists. Do you have a new workout video to market, a new gym, or other new product? Own it on and offline. Throw an event and invite fitness industry bloggers, journalists, and leaders. Create an online #hashtag to publicize the event and encourage these writers to use the hashtag when talking about your event. Offer these writers a draw- the ability to use the new product, take pictures using equipment, leading classes, or otherwise participating. Track online placement with the #hashtag you created. Upload photos of the events to your social media and offer journalists and bloggers the ability to access fun photos later. These kinds of offline events are becoming increasingly popular in business and have helped boost online engagement incredibly.
? Sponsor contests offline such as a local fun run. Encourage online participation and engagement by challenging participants to come up with training regimes, fun ways to unwind after the race, or contests for logos in advance of the event that will be featured on your website and social media. By reaching out to sports enthusiasts and participants, your brand can build familiarity with consumers and encourage engagement with your brand.
? Host a day of fitness for the community. Offer free classes, demonstrations, races, or whatever?s appropriate to your products and services. Create a specialty #hashtag to promote the day of fitness within the community online. Reach out to local media to similarly promote the day and your business? brand. Reach out to members of local government like City Hall to come participate, to announce a race, or to similarly preside over the day. By combining these efforts, your brand can effectively gain organic press, online exposure, and community favor.
Think Outside the Box
Fitness and health industry marketing is a highly competitive arena. Results are hard to achieve if your business is trailing behind the pack trying to replicate the efforts of others. Be a leader instead and merge your online and offline marketing streams to gain more consumer engagement and press. Think up a creative way in which your business can reach out to industry leaders, press, and consumers. You don?t have to break the bank to obtain publicity for your brand. With some creativity, your business can spread the word of mouth offline to start a wave online.

Dec. 26, 2012 ? The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) has announced significant progress for tigers in three key landscapes across the big cat's range due to better law enforcement, protection of additional habitat, and strong government partnerships.
The successes are much-needed good news as tiger numbers worldwide continue to hover at all-time lows due to the combined threat of poaching, loss of prey, and habitat destruction. WCS estimates that only 3,200 tigers exist in the wild.
The news begins in southwestern India where WCS research and conservation efforts that began 25 years ago now show a major rebound of tigers in the Western Ghats region of Karnataka State. Over 600 individuals have been identified to date from camera trap photos during the last decade in this mountainous landscape. In Nagarahole and Bandipur National Parks, tigers have actually reached saturation levels, with surplus young tigers spilling out into forest-reserves and dispersing using secured forest corridors through a landscape that holds over a million human beings. The combination of strict government-led anti-poaching patrols, voluntary relocation of villages away from tiger habitats, and the vigilant local presence of WCS conservation partners watching over tigers has led to the rebound of big-cat populations and their prey. In newer tiger reserves including Bhadra and Kudremukh, numbers have increased by as much as 50 percent after years of neglect and chronic poaching were tackled.
In Thailand, WCS conservationists report a tiger comeback in Huai Kha Khaeng (HKK) Wildlife Sanctuary -- a 2,700 square kilometer (1,042 square mile) protected area in the vast Western Forest Complex. WCS has worked closely with Thai authorities to beef up enforcement and anti-poaching patrols in the region. Last year, a notorious poaching ring was busted, and this year the gang leaders were given prison sentences of up to five years -- the most severe punishments for wildlife poaching in Thailand's history. Since their capture, there have been no known tiger or elephant poaching incidents in the park. Tiger numbers have been rising steadily in the park since 2007, with a record 50-plus tigers counted last year.
Meanwhile in Russia, government officials are drafting a new law that will make transport, sales, and possession of endangered animals a criminal offense rather than just a civil crime. This will close a loophole that currently allows poachers to claim they found endangered species like tigers already dead and thus avoid stiffer criminal penalties for poaching.
Russia is making progress in creating additional protected areas for tigers, too, declaring a new corridor called Central Ussuri Wildlife Refuge on October 18. The new refuge acts as a linkage between the Sikhote-Alin tiger population in Russia, which is the main population of Amur tigers, and some of the best tiger habitat in China's Heilongjiang Province in the Wandashan Mountains. The creation of the new refuge ensures that tigers have the capacity to move across the international border between Russian and China in this region. WCS first identified this key corridor in 1999 after conducting joint wildlife surveys with Chinese and Russian scientists there. WCS President and CEO Cristi?n Samper said: "Tigers are clearly fighting for their very existence, but it's important to know that there is hope. Victories like these give us the resolve to continue to battle for these magnificent big cats. While the news about tigers has been bleak, these recent developments clearly show how smart strategies and strong partnerships are ensuring tigers are saved for centuries to come."

Mashable's Anita Li contributed to this report from Toronto.
Research in Motion, maker of the once-treasured but now beleaguered BlackBerry, is in trouble. RIM cut 5,000 jobs -- 30% of its workforce -- this past summer. Its most recent earnings report beat expectations but still isn't much to celebrate, as subscriber numbers are down and the report shows nearly a 50% drop off in sales since the same quarter last year.
[More from Mashable: 10 Ways Brands Will Win With Content Marketing in 2013]
RIM's only hope -- its Luke Skywalker -- lies in BlackBerry 10, which may or may not succeed against the mobile OS behemoths that are Apple's iOS and Google's Android platforms.
But even if BlackBerry 10 fails and RIM goes the way of the dinosaur, there's a silver lining for Ontario, Canada, the province it calls home: Ex-RIM employees are taking their resources and know-how to the local startup community.
[More from Mashable: Nokia and RIM Enter Patent License Agreement]
Kalu Kalu is a former RIM employee who left the company this year to found MyShoebox, a photo-backup solution. While at RIM, he worked on the prototype team, which he said is responsible for looking at ?new ideas and new products that were not necessarily part of the traditional product roadmap."
?There was a culture there at the time where you could -- even as a student ?- there was the ability for you to come in and build and develop innovative ideas," said Kalu. "I had the opportunity to present some of the ideas that I worked on to the executives, to product managers. For the longest time, I really enjoyed that aspect. It was almost kind of like a startup within a larger company. But then, with some of the changes ?- like the organizational changes -- it became a bit harder to pursue ideas that were more ambitious.?
Ultimately, Kalu decided it was best to strike out on his own.
?To try and deliver a brand new product is very, very difficult, so it ultimately came down to [that] I felt like I wanted to sort of pursue something on my own, and actually try to build something and help keep cultivating and innovating in Canada, [in] Toronto.?
Stories like Kalu's are found across the Ontario startup community.
"We're seeing a lot of the RIM talent doing startups," said Steve Currie, coach and mentor at Ontario's CommuniTech, a non-profit and tech incubator. "We've had a number of the displaced RIM folks come in and work as mentors and coaches on a volunteer basis as well for our startup community. We're seeing them engage in a bunch of different ways. Many of the former RIM folks want to stay in the region, there's a lot going on in the tech community here so there are opportunities."
Krista Jones, practice lead at Toronto-based incubator MaRS, agreed that ex-RIM employees are having a big impact in the local tech-startup community.
"Most people from RIM, what they do as they leave is go back into the startup community," said Jones. "You see former RIM employees all over the place either as founders or as employees in the startup scene, which has been great for the startup community in Ontario."
RIM's former talent may be staying in Ontario for a wealth of reasons: ties to the area or a desire to be a part of the booming tech-startup culture, for instance. But it's not an entirely organic phenomenon: Ontario's Minister of Economic Development and Innovation, Brad Duguid, is doing everything in his power to ensure former RIM talent stays in Ontario.
"RIM is a company built on innovation, and they're innovating every single day," said Duguid, who's more optimistic than most about RIM's prospects. "They have incredible talent. They recognized the position they're in, they're transforming their company and I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised as RIM goes through that transformation.
"That being said, they've had to shed some talent," he added. "Our goal has been to ensure that talent continues to participate in our [technology] sector. We've been successful with companies like OpenText. We've also been successful at funneling a number of those workers through business-startup opportunities like CommuniTech, where they've taken ideas and talent that have evolved from what RIM has provided to create new ventures."
Janet Ecker, president of the Toronto Financial Services Alliance, offered a similar sentiment.
"RIM's success was a role model," she said. "They're a household name. I think that has motivated [Ontario] and they themselves have re-invested in the community. [RIM]'s investments and the infrastructure and the cluster they have built will succeed regardless of what happens to RIM. I think they've built something there that will continue regardless of what happens to the company."
Will RIM survive? If it fails, what will rise from its ashes? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
