Iraqi civilian deaths climb in 2011: study (Reuters)
BAGHDAD (Reuters) ? The number of civilians killed in violence in Iraq rose slightly in 2011 from the previous year, as daily bombings and attacks continued to claim victims almost nine years after the overthrow of Saddam Hussein, a study showed on Monday.
A total of 4,059 civilians were killed in violent incidents in Iraq in 2011, compared to 3,976 in 2010, rights group Iraq Body Count said in its annual study.
That took the number of civilian deaths recorded since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam and unleashed a sectarian conflict to more than 114,000.
"The number of civilian deaths in Iraq in 2011 was almost at the same level as in 2010 - there has now been no noticeable downward trend since mid-2009," IBC said in a statement.
"Time will tell whether the withdrawal of U.S. forces will have an effect on casualty levels."
The last U.S. troops left Iraq on December 18, leaving the country ruled by a fragile unity government, made up of parties allied to different sectarian groups.
Hours after the exit, Iraq's Shi'ite Muslim Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki sparked the worst political crisis in a year by announcing an arrest warrant for the Sunni vice president on charges he led death squads.
Overall violence has decreased since the invasion - although the figures from Iraq Body Count show a halt in that decline since 2009.
An al Qaeda-linked Sunni insurgency and Shi'ite militia are still capable of carrying out lethal, large-scale attacks.
At least 53 people were killed in March 2011 when gunmen laid siege to a provincial council headquarters in Saddam's hometown of Tikrit. A wave of attacks across cities in Iraq killed around 70 people in August.
The worst attack of 2011 occurred on December 22 when bombings hit mainly Shi'ite areas in Baghdad, killing at least 72 people and wounding more than 200 others.
IBC's numbers are higher than those provided by the Iraqi government, which put the number of civilians killed in violence in 2011 at 1,578, according to monthly data from the Health Ministry.

Major League Baseball: Mora retires after 13 seasons

CARACAS, Venezuela -- Two-time All-Star Melvin Mora is retiring from baseball, five weeks shy of his 40th birthday.
Mora played 13 seasons in the big leagues, 10 of them with the Baltimore Orioles. He began last year with the Arizona Diamondbacks, was released on July 1 while hitting .228 with no home runs and did not play again in the majors.
"It's a very difficult decision because this has been my life, but it's time to do it," Mora said Thursday at a news conference in Valencia, Venezuela.
"I've been in this for many years and it's time to dedicate myself to my family," he said.
Mora and his wife had quintuplets in 2001.
Mora was a career .277 hitter with 171 home runs and 754 RBIs with Baltimore, Colorado, Arizona and the New York Mets. His best season was 2004, when he hit .340 with 27 homers and 104 RBIs for the Orioles and led the American League with a .419 on-base percentage.
Versatile with his glove, he played every position in the majors except pitcher and catcher.
After a solid season for the Rockies in 2010, he signed a $2 million contract with Arizona for the 2011 season. But Mora injured his neck in a car accident during spring training and later missed time while on the bereavement list. Late in June, the Diamondbacks said they planned to cut him.
Born in Venezuela, Mora began his pro career in 1992. He was in the minors until 1999, when he made his big league debut and became a postseason sparkplug for the New York Mets. That was the only year Mora reached the playoffs.
"I've had a beautiful career that I will always remember," he said.

Bahrain to try 8 in terror case next month (AP)
MANAMA, Bahrain ? Bahrain's top prosecutor says the Gulf kingdom has wrapped up an investigation into an alleged Iranian-linked terror cell and plans to put the eight defendants on trial next month.
The head of public prosecution, Nawaf Hamza, said on Thursday the unnamed defendants will be tried in the island nation's High Criminal Court on charges of espionage and of having ties to an outlawed group that uses terrorism to achieve its goals.
Bahraini authorities in November accused the group of having links to Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard and planning attacks against high profile sites, including the Saudi Embassy and a Gulf causeway linking Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Iran rejects the allegations.
Court hearings are to begin in early January.
