Fulton Innovation powers phones in your handbag, shows off inductive charging support for tablets (video)

Fulton Innovation has a knack for coming out with the latest -- ahem -- innovations in the rapidly-expanding world of inductive charging, and this year the crew showed up at Pepcom Digital Experience to show off the company's progress in the world of wireless power. Today its offerings, most of which are still in the works and not ready for final production as of yet, include the ability to charge your handset through your handbag. In addition, it's the first company to find a way to utilize inductive charging through a metal surface; last but not least, Fulton was showing off the upcoming medium-power Qi standard, which is capable of powering up tablets. Check out the video and gallery below to see the new techniques in development for wireless charging.

KG and The Church of Celtic Pride

Looking for the right pass (as usual).

It is nice to know that fans outside of Boston see more than just the snarl and the swagger from Kevin Garnett. They know and respect the man for being larger than life because he never makes himself larger than the team.

Garnett makes you believe that the cliches are real. Trust me, when you do this enough, you can tell from inflection who means it and who's going through the motions. And some go through the motions with the press but believe it privately. But KG is one of the few in the league who talks the talk of the walk he walks. In a sport where so many players are steadfast in their struggle to be self-aware, to understand how much greater they can be if they let go of ego, who are always considering themselves and their image and brand first, Garnett is a rarity. He was made to do this. He was made for Boston.

He was made to be a Celtic.

Love it.

New York archbishop "humbled" at being named cardinal (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? A "humbled" Archbishop Timothy Dolan said on Friday his elevation to cardinal by Pope Benedict is more of an honor for New York than for himself.

One of 22 newly named cardinals from around the world, Dolan was the only one representing an Archdiocese in the United States. One other American, the former archbishop of Baltimore, Edwin O'Brien, who heads the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, was also promoted.

Dolan's elevation means that New York will have a cardinal for the first time since 2009, when Edward Cardinal Egan stepped down.

Eighteen of the new cardinals including Dolan, 61, are under 80, young enough to be eligible to enter a secret conclave of cardinals that will choose the next pope after Benedict dies.

"Yes, I'm honored, humbled and grateful. But let's be frank. This is not about Timothy Dolan. This is an honor from the Holy Father to the archdiocese of New York," Dolan told a news conference after morning Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral.

"It's almost as if Pope Benedict XVI is putting the red hat of the cardinal on the top of the Empire State Building or upon the Statue of Liberty or home plate at Yankee Stadium or on the spires of this great St. Patrick's Cathedral," Dolan said.

The Archdiocese of New York, with some 2.6 million members, has been at the center of heated policy battles within the U.S. Roman Catholic community, particularly in the 1980s and '90s over the church's position on homosexuality and AIDS education.

By being named cardinal, Dolan follows in the footsteps of his predecessors, including Edward Cardinal Egan, John Cardinal O'Connor, Terence Cardinal Cooke and Francis Cardinal Spellman, all of whom were elevated to cardinal.

Dolan was named archbishop of New York in 2009 after serving as the archbishop of Milwaukee.

Health union rejects UK's pension plan

LONDON - Britain's largest health union Unite has declined to accept plans to make its members in the health service pay more and work longer before receiving their pensions, even as strike possibilities loom.

Unite's health sector national industrial committee (HSNIC) will now meet on the 11 January to consider its future strategies.

"Our NHS executives unanimously rejects the government's pernicious attempts to make hard working and dedicated NHS staff pay more, work longer and get less when they retire," said Len McCluskey, Unite's General Secretary.

"The government's attacks on public sector pensions are politically motivated, as part of an overall design to privatise the NHS, cut public services, break-up the national pay agreements, and disrupt legitimate trade union activities and organizations," McCluskey said.

The Unite's rejection of the pension plan comes even as the British Medical Association (BMA) council has sought its members' opinion on the potential for strike action over pension reforms.

The survey will be distributed to around 130,000 BMA members. If a majority supports the strike plan, the first doctor walkout for almost 40 years could follow, it is claimed.

"We want doctors and medical students to be fully aware of what's coming their way, and to have their say on what happens. Everyone will be affected, and it's up to the whole medical profession to influence what we do next," said Dr Hamish Meldrum, Chairman of the BMA Council.

The pension offer currently on the table will see NHS staff less than ten years from retirement not having to face any change to their pension, and those earning less than 26,000 pounds protected from an increase in contributions next year.

The BMA has publicly rejected the deal.

However, Unite's decision will raise the prospect of other unions also rejecting the reform package.

Ministers claimed before Christmas that most unions had accepted a deal on pension reform that would prevent a repeat of November's nationwide strike by public sector staff.

Like Unite, the biggest teaching unions also reserved their positions and are yet to confirm if they will accept the pension deal.

Next week, Unison, the biggest public sector union, will decide whether to continue its talks with ministers over implementing the pension changes.

The Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union, which represents civil servants, has already rejected the deal. Its executive will meet this month to discuss the union's next move. Its leader, Mark Serwotka, said last week that more strikes "may be necessary".

A Department of Health spokesman said: "The decision by Unite and its members is disappointing. The proposed new NHS Pension Scheme is a good deal it is fair to the NHS workforce, it is fair to the taxpayer and makes public service pensions affordable and sustainable."
