House Democrats want new housing regulator (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? More than two dozen House Democrats called on Wednesday for President Barack Obama to unseat the acting regulator of housing finance agencies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, saying he has failed to take steps that would aggressively address the nation's housing crisis.

The group of 28 Democrats, led by Representative Dennis Cardoza, are all from California, which has been hard hit by the housing market's collapse. In their letter, the lawmakers urged Obama to replace Edward DeMarco as acting director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency and to immediately nominate a new director.

"FHFA has consistently and erroneously interpreted its mandate far too narrowly and as such has failed to take adequate action to help homeowners," the letter said.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, two congressionally chartered companies charged with providing liquidity to the U.S. housing market, were seized by the government in September 2008 as mortgage losses mounted.

DeMarco, a career civil servant who was named acting director of the FHFA in August 2009, has defended the steps he has taken as conservator as being well within the authority Congress has mandated.

DeMarco, who has never been selected as the FHFA'S permanent director, has argued that the roughly $169 billion in taxpayer-funded support paid out to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac since they were seized was meant to get them back on their feet, not to provide relief to the housing market.

The Democratic call for a new leader at FHFA comes just days after Obama made a critical recess appointment of Richard Cordray as the director of the newly created Consumer Financial Protection Bureau over Republican opposition.

"We urge that you take the same action to put in place a permanent director to the FHFA," the Democrats wrote.

The lawmakers said DeMarco has limited Fannie and Freddie from helping the troubled housing market by taking too narrow a view of his mission to protect the financial health of the two firms.

"There are steps that the FHFA can take to help prevent future foreclosures while also protecting taxpayers," the letter read. "Installing a permanent director of the FHFA will allow the FHFA to move forward to make key decisions that will help keep families in their homes and improve our economy."

The Obama administration had nominated North Carolina's banks commissioner, Joseph Smith, to be the FHFA's permanent director in November 2010, but Smith withdrew his name a few months later due to staunch Republican opposition. No new nominee has since been named.

Gingrich tempers Romney attacks in South Carolina (AP)

COLUMBIA, S.C. ? Under pressure from some in his own party, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich on Thursday tempered his public attacks on front-runner Mitt Romney while defending his right to question the former Massachusetts governor's business record.

"If you ask about his career, it's because he's running for president," Gingrich said of the questions he and his allies have raised about Romney's tenure as head of a private equity fund.

"I think he owes the country a much more detailed answer about what his career was like, what decisions they made, because we're looking at the judgment, the values of a particular person," he said during a Fox News interview Thursday night.

Gingrich and other GOP presidential hopefuls have drawn the ire of an array of Republicans who believe the attacks on Romney's record at Bain Capital could hurt the party in the general election against President Barack Obama.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce entered the debate Thursday, saying it was "foolish" for Republicans to bash Romney for his work as a venture capitalist. A top South Carolina supporter of GOP contender Rick Perry, who had taken to calling Romney a "vulture capitalist," said he was joining Romney's camp out of irritation over Perry's attacks.

Gingrich called the criticism "absurd" and said his questions had been misconstrued as an attack on capitalism.

A pro-Gingrich political action committee also has railed against Romney's tenure at the helm of Bain Capital with the release this week of a 28-minute film assailing Romney for "reaping massive rewards" as head of the firm.

Gingrich is grasping for a campaign lifeline in South Carolina, which holds its primary Jan. 21, after a pair of disappointing fourth-place finishes in the contests in Iowa and New Hampshire.

During two campaign appearances in South Carolina's capital earlier Thursday, Gingrich stuck to a largely subdued campaign, focusing on his plans for saving Social Security, creating jobs and boosting domestic energy production.

He made no references to Romney, nor did he repeat his criticism of Romney's record as a venture capitalist. Instead, he tried to broaden his message with a call for auditing the federal bailout of the financial industry to see who got the money and why.

"When you have crony-capitalism and politicians taking care of their friends that's not free-enterprise. That's back-door socialism," Gingrich said during remarks to older voters at a senior citizen's expo.

The former House speaker predicted that a win in the first-in-the-South primary would pave a path to the presidency.

"If I win South Carolina, I think I will become the Republican nominee," he said.

Last month, Gingrich made a similarly bold declaration about winning the nomination. At the time he was ahead in the polls and Romney's allies had not yet blooded Gingrich with a barrage of negative attack ads in Iowa.

South Carolina has a decades-long streak of voting for the eventual GOP nominee.

From South Carolina, Gingrich was headed to Florida to raise money and open a campaign headquarters.

Three Creative Gifts for Kate Middleton's 30th Birthday (ContributorNetwork)

The Duchess of Cambridge is preparing to head into a new decade of life and she literally has everything. She's married a prince and has more money than can possibly be spent. However, with a little creativity, one can think of a few things that Kate Middleton may enjoy.

A Day of Anonymity

Most folks will never know what it is like to have their entire lives shrouded in cameras and scrutiny. This is Kate Middleton's reality 24 hours a day. Perhaps her body double, Camilla Luddington, could step in for a day and distract the paparazzi so that Kate can have a day without all of the lights and flashes. Maybe a miracle will happen and science will intervene and she will have a way to be invisible for a day. This is unlikely, so it looks like Luddington is her best shot at some chance of anonymity.

A Traditional Birthday Party

For Kate Middleton, life is everything but traditional. Perhaps a traditional birthday party with a cake, ice cream, close family and a few close friends would be very refreshing. They could also toss in a few favorite games (either adult-friendly or those from her childhood). They could add balloons and silly hats, confetti and other traditional birthday decorations.

A Chance to Speak to Princess Diana

This will obviously never come to fruition, but it would probably be an amazing experience for her if she was ever able to. Princess Diana is probably the only person who would have been able to truly relate to what Kate Middleton will experience as the years pass. Having her around would have likely been tremendously helpful. Having an opportunity for just a single conversation would have probably been incredibly enlightening for the new Duchess. Her new prince would have probably appreciated sharing such a gift as well.

Florida Panthers fan favorite Booth returns to old haunt

SUNRISE?

When Panthers coach Kevin Dineen approached David Booth in the locker room a few minutes before pregame warmups against the Islanders on Oct. 22, he had no idea that he was about to be traded for the first time in his six-year career.

"I thought he was going to tell me what to do that night. Use your speed or play the body, or, lets go, pick it up, '' Booth said Sunday afternoon after practicing with the Vancouver Canucks at BankAtlantic Center.

"He brought me through the weight room into his office and I was like, 'Hurry, just tell me already.' ? Then he says, 'A deal went through.'

"I was, 'Wow,' it's really hard to hear because I enjoyed Florida so much and have a lot of good memories here and a lot of good friends along the way. It was tough to have a change in a matter of seconds and say goodbye to something that I loved.

"Looking back it was done in a professional way and now I'm really excited to be a Canuck.''

It's no secret that this Panthers regime wasn't enamored by Booth's defensive deficiencies, and after just six games and two consecutive shutouts, General Manager Dale Tallon had seen enough. He traded Booth and his one assist, minus-6 start, along with his $18.25 million contract to the Canucks for veteran forwards Marco Sturm and Mikael Samuelsson.

Booth hasn't been the same offensive force since sustaining?two serious concussions in the 2009-10 season, a year after scoring a career-high 31 goals.

After a slow start with the Stanley Cup runner-up Canucks, Booth heated up and had five goals and 12 points in 19 games before sustaining a knee injury on Dec. 6 on a cheap shot from Colorado's Kevin Porter.

Without Booth, the Panthers have gone 17-10-8 and to the top of the Southeast Division standings.

"I thought we had a good team and the guys worked hard and wanted to win so I knew it was a matter of time they were going to play well,'' he said. "It's good to see them winning and give the fans something to cheer about.''

Booth had targeted Monday's game against the team that drafted him in 2004, but although he has been given medical clearance to play and was jabbed by his coach Alain Vigneault after practice ("I'm waiting for David to tell me he's ready to go,'') Booth won't rush back.

"This is the game I'd do anything to play and it's really tough not to,'' Booth said. "I don't think I'd do any benefit to the team. I don't have my speed right now. I have no power in the leg ?I can't even put full pressure on it.

"I'd probably get hurt if I played.''

Ironically, since joining the Panthers, both Sturm and Samuelsson ? who have expiring contracts - have been slowed by concussions. However, Samuelsson has a goal and five assists in his last five games and seems ready to provide the secondary scoring that is sorely needed to take pressure off the Panthers slumping top line.

"Booth is such a dynamic speed skater and has a style of game that was very specific, as does Samuelsson. They're not similar, but both are effective,'' Dineen said after Panthers practice at Saveology.com Iceplex. "When the pucks on [Samuelsson's] stick a lot of creative things can happen.''

Markstrom scare

Panthers rookie goalie Jacob Markstrom was a no-show at practice because he tweaked the same knee that was surgically repaired last season in Friday's 5-2 loss to the Devils.

Dineen said he gave Markstrom a, "maintenance day,'' off so the doctors could make sure everything is, "solid and stable.''

"He had some long-term health issues last year and we want to make sure we're erring on the side of caution,'' he said. "I'm confident he'll be fine to be an option to play [Monday].''
