DAYTON, Ohio (AP) ? Every bump and swat threw yet another chill into a California team that had never seen anything like it.

Must have made the other teams in South Florida's bracket shudder just a bit, too.

The Bulls introduced the Big East's nastiest defense to the NCAA tournament Wednesday night, allowing only 13 points in the first half of a 65-54 victory over a California team that went long stretches without a single point.

Ugly, ugly, ugly. Just the way South Florida likes it.

"We get mad when people score, no matter what kind of bucket it is," said Victor Rudd, who had 15 points. "And that's what makes us have people scoring in the 50s, 40s. We don't like it when people score at all, not even on a free throw.

"So we get mad at each other, and that's how we play great defense."

South Florida (21-13) will play No. 5 seed Temple in Nashville on Friday, a matchup of teams known for gritty defense. Few have been better than this one for the first 20 minutes on the NCAA stage.

The Bulls swarmed 'em, bumped 'em and swatted their shots away ? those that weren't air balls, that is.

California (24-10) didn't score over the last 8:55 of the first half, missing 10 shots and turning it over twice while South Florida pulled ahead 36-13.

"We just didn't have any energy," California guard Allen Crabbe said.

Yep, the Bulls stole that away, too.

Guard Jorge Gutierrez, the Pac-12 player of the year, was held to 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting. California managed only five field goals in the first half, when three of their points came off free throws.

"I didn't imagine that happening," California coach Mike Montgomery said. "We dug ourselves a huge hole in the first half, and that's probably as bad as I've seen us play. We weren't doing much of anything."

It wasn't all defense that got it done for South Florida. Freshman point guard Anthony Collins, a thin-built player with a youthful face that reminds coach Stan Heath of a 12-year-old kid, played like a star in his first NCAA tournament game, scoring 12 points.

"We play great defense," Collins said. "So when we just take our time and get great shots on offense, I think we can beat anybody."

The Golden Bears won't soon forget the way they got worked over. They must have felt as if there were six Bulls on the floor at times playing defense.

No, only five. The refs counted.

The Bulls set a Big East record by giving up only 56.9 points per game this season. Their problem: They score about as many points as they give up. South Florida didn't have a player average in double figures for the season.

Realizing he didn't have many scoring options, Heath instituted the defense-first, defense-last philosophy that got them to their first NCAA tournament appearance in 20 years and, now, their first win. The Bulls came in 0-2 in the tournament.

Other teams exult when one of their players hits a big basket. The Bulls cheer from the bench as the other team passes the ball around helplessly and hopelessly.

They were cheering their defense from the opening tip.

The first time down the court, Gutierrez forced a running shot that was too hard, a taste of the misery ahead. California missed its first five shots and eight of its first nine, helping South Florida pull ahead 15-3.

Collins made a driving layup, a floater, a 15-foot pull-up jumper and a layup off his steal during the opening run, getting South Florida's unpredictable offense moving.

The Golden Bears readily acknowledged that they hadn't played anything quite like the Bulls' defense. With four players averaging in double figures, their best chance was to spread the ball around and be patient.

They ran out of patience real fast, prompting Montgomery to call a timeout to get his team settled down. Instead, things quickly got worse.

A lot worse.

Gutierrez hit a fade-away 15-foot jumper with 8:56 left in the first half. The Golden Bears wouldn't score again before halftime, with South Florida pulling off a 14-0 run. It ended with a telling moment: California guard Justin Cobbs dribbling toward the basket and failing to even attempt a shot before the buzzer sounded.

Totally discombobulated.

The Golden Bears shuffled toward the locker room with blanks expressions. Their 13 points matched the seventh-fewest in an opening half since the NCAA tournament expanded in 1985, according to STATS LLC.

The Bulls pulled ahead 57-25 with 8:49 left, making sure there wouldn't be another big comeback on the same floor where two of them opened the First Four on Tuesday night.

"I really liked for the 30 minutes the way we played," Heath said.

The only question was how low they could keep the sore. California got its 40th point with 2:54 to go, and fouled repeatedly in the final minute, giving itself enough chances to hit the 50-point mark.

Chinese Premier Wen calls for political reforms

BEIJING (AP) ? Wen Jiabao, entering his final year as China's premier, called Wednesday for structural political reforms to forestall chaos and solidify growth as the nation's legislature approved a budget aiming to boost domestic consumption in the face of weak demand for exports.

On the final day of its annual session, the legislature also approved revisions to the key criminal procedure law that at least on paper will restrict police powers to secretly detain people, a tactic increasingly used against activists and government critics.

At his annual news conference following the session's close, Wen repeated vague reform calls, saying they were needed to consolidate the achievements of three decades of economic growth and prevent a repeat of the mass disorder that rocked China during the violent 1966-1976 Cultural Revolution.

"Without a successful political structural reform ... new problems that have cropped up in China's society will not be fundamentally resolved and such historical tragedies as the Cultural Revolution may happen again," Wen said.

"I know very well that the reform will not be an easy one. The reform will not be able to succeed without the consciousness, the support, the enthusiasm and creativity of our people," he said.

The Cultural Revolution, Mao Zedong's failed experiment in radical egalitarianism, led to the deaths and persecution of millions, upended the nation's leadership, and fostered broad cynicism about the communist system. China's leaders, many of whom suffered grave hardships during that period, routinely hold it up as justification for strict political and societal control.

As before, Wen offered no specific proposals, saying reform had to adhere to China's particular national circumstances and proceed in a "step-by-step manner." Chinese leaders often define political reform in terms of boosting administrative efficiency, but even those paltry efforts at streamlining have gained little traction against an entrenched bureaucracy and struggle for influence ahead of this fall's generational leadership transition.

Touching on recent unrest in Tibetan areas, Wen said economic growth was needed to counter sentiments that have prompted more than two dozen Tibetans, including several teenagers, to set themselves on fire to protest China's suppression of their religion and culture and call for the return of the Dalai Lama.

"We don't support this kind of extreme acts in disrupting and undermining social harmony. The young monks are innocent. We feel distressed about what they have done," Wen said. "We should treat Tibetan compatriots as equals and with respect and keep improving our work."

The 12.4 trillion yuan ($1.97 trillion) budget approved by the congress is up 14.1 percent over last year and calls for a boost in domestic consumption to keep the economy expanding while overseas markets remain weak. It pledges to boost disposable incomes through greater support for social security, employment and public housing.

The government plans growth of 7.5 percent this year ? a target below previous goals as it seeks a slightly slower pace of expansion while trying to rebalance the world's second-largest economy.

China has produced three decades of rapid growth primarily through exports, but the sluggish world economy and rising wages within China raise questions about how long that can continue. The World Bank said recently that the economic strategy is unsustainable. The bank issued a report with a Chinese Cabinet think-tank that called for more free-market reforms.

The changes to the criminal procedure law were the most high-profile legal measures passed by the congress. They are portrayed as offering better protection for suspects and reflecting increasing awareness in China of the need for stronger detainee rights, although legal enforcement in China remains weak.

Police and prosecutors routinely ignore current legal provisions protecting suspects' rights and have frequently used charges of endangering national security against dissidents.

The measure's approval by a vote of 2,639 to 160 ends months of speculation and debate about whether the government would give police the legal authority to do something they have long done extralegally: disappear people for months at a time without telling their families.

Police have increasingly used the tactic over the past year to detain activist lawyers, democracy campaigners, and even internationally acclaimed artist Ai Weiwei, amid government worries about whether the popular uprisings of the Arab Spring might spread to China.

There are two relevant articles in the new law that deal with notifying families, one in regular criminal cases and the other involving a type of detention known as residential surveillance. Both have been revised to better protect detainees, though they don't do away completely with secret detentions, analysts said.

The authorities have always operated just as they pleased without regard to rules," Pu said, citing the ongoing and still-unexplained detention of figures such as blind lawyer Chen Guangcheng and Liu Xia, the wife of imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo.

When I handed my business card to a vendor representative at the recent RSA conference, he snapped a photo with his iPhone and handed it back. Intrigued, I asked for an explanation. By using the CardMunch (free, direct) iPhone app he captured my full contact information, no typing required.

Having experienced dozens of business card OCR (Optical Character Recognition) utilities over the years I was skeptical. However, it turns out that CardMunch doesn't use OCR at all. Rather, it transmits the card image to a team of human transcribers at LinkedIn. The time between submitting a card and getting detailed contact information varies, but what you do get is letter-perfect, unlike most OCR solutions. I'm a convert!

Sorry, Android fans; CardMunch only works on devices running iOS 4.0 or later. Specifically it supports iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (4th generation), iPad 2 Wi-Fi and iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G.

To search for a contact you just start typing. With each letter, the list narrows to include only those whose first name, last name, or company name start with the letters you've typed. You can also turn the phone on its side for a flip-through carousel view of all the cards you've snapped.

Tapping the envelope icon on the contact page creates an email message pre-filled with boilerplate text that includes your LinkedIn profile page URL. Of course you can change the message text to say whatever you wish before sending.

A menu of action choices lets you forward contact info to another email account, save information to the iPhone's built-in contacts list, delete the entry, or resubmit the card for transcription. The recipient of a forwarded contact gets both an image of the card and a .VCF file with the data.

You can set a few global options by going into CardMunch's iPhone settings. Probably the most significant is "Auto Save to iPhone." With this option turned on every contact gets saved both within CardMunch and in the phone's own contact list.

You can also put the contact list in Edit mode. In this mode each contact gets a checkbox, and you can delete all checked contacts, send them all a LinkedIn invitation, or save them all to your iPhone's contacts.

Alas, there's no easy way to do a bulk transfer of contact information from the iPhone to your PC. The app's makers may have assumed that transfer will happen automatically when you sync contacts, but some of us don't burden the iPhone with our full collection of business contacts.

A Practical Solution
I used to come back from conferences and trade shows with stacks of business cards. I'd slip a rubber band around the stack and toss it in a drawer, with the other bundles. Finding a contact involved rummaging through any number of business card bundles. Now with CardMunch I don't need to hang onto cards.

Yes, there are some limitations. You have to be a LinkedIn member, it only works on iOS devices, and there's no easy way to do a bulk transfer of contacts to your PC. It's still the best solution I've seen for turning business cards into accurate, actionable contacts.

Shares pause after U.S. jobs, monetary policy in focus

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares fell on Monday as investors paused to assess the effect of strong U.S. jobs data, which scaled back expectations for more easing ahead of this week's Federal Reserve meeting, while uncertainty over Chinese growth also weighed on sentiment.

The MSCI Asia Pacific ex-Japan index .MIAPJ0000PUS eased 0.6 percent after rising as much as 1.3 percent on Friday. The index has risen about 12 percent this year.

Japan's Nikkei average .N225 rose to a fresh seven-month high, after jumping more than 2 percent at one point on Friday to top the 10,000 mark for the first time in seven months. .T

The dollar hovered around three-week highs against a basket of major currencies on Monday, but slipped against the yen to 82.15 yen, after touching a near 11-month high of 82.64 yen on Friday. The euro eased 0.2 percent to $1.3094, after hitting a four-week low of $1.3085. <FRX/>

"The markets were due for a correction after rising too strongly so far, bringing prices to levels which wouldn't be sustainable," said Naohiro Niimura, a partner at research and consulting firm Market Risk Advisory Co.

Greece averted the immediate threat of an uncontrolled default when a sufficient number of private creditors agreed on a bond swap deal on Friday that will cut the country's public debt and clear the way for a new bailout.

While concerns about Europe's debt crisis will not fade away with the completion of the Greece debt swap deal, the focus will likely shift to global growth and monetary policy, Barclays Capital analysts said.

Data on Friday showed solid growth in U.S. nonfarm payrolls, suggesting the world's largest economy was strengthening and in less need of further monetary stimulus from the Fed, which holds its policy meeting on Tuesday.

While U.S. data continued to show a recovery trend, economic conditions were dire in Europe and mixed in China.

China's trade balance plunged $31.5 billion into the red in February as imports swamped exports to leave the largest deficit in at least a decade, data over the weekend showed. Recent data showed China's inflation cooled in February, while retail sales and industrial output came in below forecast.

"Aside from healthy demand for industrial metals, assessment of recent Chinese data is mixed, and more figures are needed to clarify the uncertainty," Niimura said.

In a wide-ranging statement highlighting its goals for 2012, the People's Bank of China (PBOC) promised to reduce state control over China's interest rates and currency markets to allow market forces to have a bigger play.

It also said Beijing has ample room to further cut the reserve requirement ratio for banks, adding that any decision would be based on market liquidity conditions and foreign exchange inflows.

The trade data "means bigger need to stimulate domestic demand - via fiscal stimulus and monetary easing. So we expect 200 bps more in RRR cuts and 50 bps in interest rate cuts later this year," said Dariusz Kowalczyk, senior economist and strategist for Asia ex-Japan at Credit Agricole CIB, in a note. Following Monday's PBOC comments, "We expect the PBOC to loosen liquidity in line with slower growth and inflation," he said.

Greece's successful debt restructuring brought some relief to riskier assets on Friday, but poor euro zone growth prospects and fears Portugal may also impose losses on creditors were likely to limit the fall in yields on weaker sovereign bonds.

The International Swaps and Derivatives Association, the arbiter of rules governing the sale and use of credit default swaps, said on Friday Greece triggered the payment on CDS, which act as insurance contracts on defaults or credit restructurings, but did not see a big market impact.

A maximum of $3.16 billion of net outstanding Greek CDS contracts could be paid out, while about 93 percent of CDS contracts are collateralised, meaning investors and dealers hold collateral on their books to cover potential payouts. ISDA said an auction will be held to determine the actual payout amounts on March 19.

Sentiment in Asian credit markets improved slightly, narrowing the spread on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment-grade index by about 1 basis point on Monday.

Brent crude futures fell 0.5 percent to $125.39 a barrel while U.S. crude shed 0.6 percent to $106.79.

Copper fell 0.5 percent to $8,454 a tonne.
