WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is convening a summit with leaders from Mexico and Canada on Monday that aims to boost a fragile recovery and grapple with thorny energy issues against a backdrop of painfully high gas prices.

The session at the White House is a make-good for a planned meeting last November in Hawaii on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific summit. Obama ended up meeting just with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper when Mexican President Felipe Calderon's top deputy was killed in a helicopter crash.

Sure to feature prominently in Monday's Oval Office session: Mexico's role as a major oil exporter and the controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada that Obama has shelved pending further review.

Republicans denounced Obama's move as a blow to job-creation and U.S. energy needs. But he maintains GOP leaders in Congress forced his hand by insisting on a decision before an acceptable pipeline route was found.

The pipeline would link Alberta's oil sands to the U.S. Gulf Coast, but environmentalists fear both its local impact and a major uptick in greenhouse gases blamed for global warming.

Harper has voiced disappointment with Obama's decision. He also visited China in February to explore alternatives. Canada has the world's third-largest oil reserves ? more than 170 billion barrels ? after Saudi Arabia and Venezuela, and daily production of 1.5 million barrels from the oil sands is expected to rise to 3.7 million by 2025.

Trade also topped the North American summit agenda, with Obama hoping that booming exports will help drive the U.S. recovery. The White House also listed growth and competitiveness, citizen security and climate change as key issues, along with the agenda for the next summit on the docket, the hemispherewide Summit of the Americas later this month in Cartagena, Colombia.

Obama, Harper and Calderon are well-known to each other from international gatherings ? but are headed in different electoral directions.

While Obama faces a tough re-election battle for the next seven months, Calderon is term-limited. The battle to succeed him formally kicked off last week and will culminate with Mexican elections July 1. The main issue is the deadly war his government has waged with drug cartels, which has claimed an estimated 47,000 lives.

By contrast, Harper, who has led Canada since 2006, appears secure in his job, having led his Conservatives from minority status to a majority in Parliament in elections last May. He doesn't have to face voters again for four years.

Another reason Obama might envy Harper: thanks to that majority, the budget Harper's government introduced last week should pass easily, including its budget cuts designed to eliminate Canada's deficit by 2015.

When exposed to the popular herbicide Roundup, tadpoles change shape in ways that are normally induced by predators

The world's most popular weed killer, Roundup, can cause amphibians to change shape, according to research published today in Ecological Applications.

Rick Relyea, University of Pittsburgh professor of biological sciences in the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences and director of Pitt's Pymatuning Laboratory of Ecology, demonstrated that sublethal and environmentally relevant concentrations of Roundup caused two species of amphibians to alter their morphology. According to Relyea, this is the first study to show that a pesticide can induce morphological changes in a vertebrate animal.

Relyea set up large outdoor water tanks that contained many of the components of natural wetlands. Some tanks contained caged predators, which emit chemicals that naturally induce changes in tadpole morphology (such as larger tails to better escape predators). After adding tadpoles to each tank, he exposed them to a range of Roundup concentrations. After 3 weeks, the tadpoles were removed from the tanks.

"It was not surprising to see that the smell of predators in the water induced larger tadpole tails," says Relyea. "That is a normal, adaptive response. What shocked us was that the Roundup induced the same changes. Moreover, the combination of predators and Roundup caused the tail changes to be twice as large." Because tadpoles alter their body shape to match their environment, having a body shape that does not fit the environment can put the animals at a distinct disadvantage.

Predators cause tadpoles to change shape by altering the stress hormones of tadpoles, says Relyea. The similar shape changes when exposed to Roundup suggest that Roundup may interfere with the hormones of tadpoles and potentially many other animals.

"This discovery highlights the fact that pesticides, which are important for crop production and human health, can have unintended consequences for species that are not the pesticide's target," says Relyea. "Herbicides are not designed to affect animals, but we are learning that they can have a wide range of surprising effects by altering how hormones work in the bodies of animals. This is important because amphibians not only serve as a barometer of the ecosystem's health, but also as an indicator of potential dangers to other species in the food chain, including humans."

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - There were fireworks Sunday in the first inning at Jim Patterson Stadium - and in more ways than one. Eruptions came from both the Louisville baseball team's offense and Villanova head coach Joe Godri.

The No. 15 Cardinals returned to imposing their will in the opening inning, Godri didn't get to witness the totality of the damage after being ejected after arguing the second controversial call in as many days, and Travis Tingle consistently dodged trouble in an effective outing that helped net Louisville a 6-1 victory in BIG EAST play.

Following its sweep of Cincinnati the weekend prior, Louisville (20-8, 5-1 BIG EAST) won the series over Villanova (15-14, 2-4) after winning two of the three games. In the Cardinals' 5-2 loss on Saturday, the game ended on a disputed call at second base when it appeared Louisville's runner beat a force out attempt. Had Louisville gotten the call, the Cardinals would have had the tying run at second base with No. 3 hitter Jeff Gardner (Louisville, Ky./Whitefield Academy HS) in the batter's box.

Louisville was on the beneficial end of a controversial call on Sunday. After junior second baseman Nick Ratajczak (Joliet, Ill./Gulf Coast CC) tagged a double to left, Gardner grounded into the hole between first and second. Villanova second baseman Tyler Sciacca ranged over but didn't come up with the ball cleanly. As he recovered the ball, Ratajczak broke toward home. Sciacca's throw to catcher Adam Nelson easily beat Ratajczak, who halted his sprint down the line several feet before the plate. Nelson chased Ratajczak down, tagged him and fired to second to try to get Gardner, who slid safely into the bag.

Stunningly, though, the play wasn't over. The home plate umpire ruled Ratajczak safe on the tag attempt, which allowed the Cards' infielder to cross the plate unopposed. The umpire's apparent ruling was Nelson exchanged the ball from his glove to his throwing hand before he tagged Ratajczak with his mitt. For Ratajczak to have been out by a tag with Nelson's glove, Nelson had to have been holding the ball in his mitt.

Godri raced out of the dugout to dispute the call. With Nelson's catcher's mask in his right hand, Godri argued with the umpire for several moments. Godri then slammed the mask to the ground, prompting his ejection.

Louisville took advantage of the situation. Senior first baseman Stewart Ijames (Owensboro, Ky./Owensboro Catholic HS) flared an RBI single to left center, freshman shortstop Zach Lucas (Louisville, Ky./Butler HS) walked and sophomore third baseman Ty Young (Coatesville, Pa./Malvern Prep) lined an RBI single to right for a 3-1 lead.

The Cardinals tacked on two more runs in the second inning. After sophomore rightfielder Cole Sturgeon (Owensboro, Ky./Owensboro Catholic HS) notched a bunt single and Ratajczak was hit, Gardner rifled an RBI single to center and Ijames added an RBI on an infield single deep up the middle. Villanova starter Stephen Ostapeck (2-1), the reigning BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, only lasted 1.1 innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits.

On the other hand, Tingle (Louisville, Ky./Cleveland State CC) didn't allow an earned run over six innings while recording his fifth win against one loss. The senior right-hander worked his way out of several jams, as the Wildcats left two runners on in the third and fourth innings, respectively, and left the bases loaded in the sixth when Tingle made the stab on a line drive by centerfielder Paul Rambaud with two outs. Tingle struck out five while allowing seven hits and three walks.

Louisville's bullpen had another terrific outing. Sophomore right-hander Chad Green (Effingham, Ill./Effingham HS), freshman right-hander Nick Burdi (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South HS) and senior right-hander Derek Self (Cave City, Ky./Caverna HS) all pitched one inning of scoreless relief. Green struck out two, Burdi didn't allow a baserunner and Self sealed the win by inducing a pop out by Villanova No. 3 hitter Matt Fleishman.

Ratajczak reached base four times for Louisville, which collected 10 hits. Ratajczak was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs, and he was hit twice. Gardner was also 2-for-3, Ijames was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Sturgeon was 2-for-4. Young and sophomore Alex Chittenden (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central HS) both had one hit.

In the fifth inning, Young was hit leading off, stole second and eventually scored on a squeeze bunt by sophomore catcher Kyle Gibson (Henderson, Ky./Henderson County HS). Young stole two bases to boost his season total to nine. Lucas' hitting streak was stopped at 12.

Louisville hosts Western Kentucky at 6 p.m., ET on Tuesday before traveling to Georgetown for a three-game set. The Cardinals and Hoyas will play at 3 p.m., ET on Thursday, at 4 p.m. on Friday and at noon on Saturday.
