Unification Church head Sun Myung Moon dies at 92

GAPYEONG, South Korea (Reuters) - Sun Myung Moon, a self-declared messiah who founded the controversial Unification Church which has millions of followers around the globe, died on Monday leaving a vast business empire and a legacy of mass weddings.

Church officials said Moon, 92, who had suffered complications from pneumonia, was taken to hospital in Seoul in mid-August and was moved to a hospital in a rural retreat last week when his family believed there was little chance of recovery.

His body was lying in a vast building resembling the White House at the retreat in rugged hills about an hour outside the South Korean capital of Seoul. The funeral will be on September 15, after which he will be buried at the retreat.

Moon had led an active public life until recently, officiating a mass wedding for 2,500 in March and leading a service of more than 15,000 followers in July.

Critics have for years vilified the church as a heretical and dangerous cult and questioned its murky finances and how it indoctrinates followers, described in derogatory terms as "Moonies."

Moon is survived by his wife - the pair are called "true parents" by followers - and 10 of their 13 children.

Religious experts say Moon will remain at the centre of the church, keeping it together despite signs of previously unimaginable fissure among his sons, according to a creed that had been prepared since a helicopter crash four years ago that nearly killed Moon and his wife.

Born in what is now North Korea in 1920, Moon founded the church soon after the Korean War that ended in 1953, rapidly expanding the ministry internationally and building a business at the same time that served as the backbone of the empire.

The Unification Church runs the Segye Times newspaper in South Korea and more than a dozen other firms along with overseas businesses, including the conservative Washington Times.

"The Unification Church will continue to be in good shape even after Sun Myung Moon's death," said Tark Ji-il, who teaches church history at the Busan Presbyterian University.

"The Unification Church is not simply a religious organisation, but is a commercial organisation built on religious conviction."

MOON "MET JESUS"

Moon's farming parents followed the Presbyterian Church, a branch of Protestant Christianity. When he was 15, he said, he met Jesus, who appeared to him as he prayed in the hills and asked him to take on the work of building God's kingdom on Earth.

Moon refused twice, according to a biography by Mike Breen, former journalist for the Washington Times.

"Jesus asked him a third time. 'There is no one else who can do this work.' ... From the comfort of his youthful ideals, he peered over the abyss of the difficulties that would lie ahead and decided. 'I will do it,' he promised."

Moon led an active public life until recently, officiating with his wife at a mass wedding for 2,500 people from around the world in March and in July leading a massive service of more than 15,000 followers.

Moon had handed over day-to-day operations of the church, which has its headquarters in Seoul, to one of his sons and the management of the Tongil Group with interests in construction, resorts, travel agencies and the newspaper to another son.

Church officials and followers alike rejected the idea that the man who proclaimed himself a messiah would be reincarnated.

"The church teaches us, dust to dust, and it's the soul that goes to heaven, and so is the law, the truth and order of things, which is why all humans come and go," said Lee Sang-bo, a life-long follower of the church who said he was married at a mass wedding in 1982.

"And a messiah is no exception."

Moon was known as a strident anti-communist and visited North Korea in 1991 to meet the reclusive state's founder, Kim Il-sung, to discuss business ventures and unification, a visit condemned by South Korea which remains technically at war with the North.

He also courted controversy in his business life and served prison term in New York after a 1982 conviction on tax evasion charges.

Pinedorado in Cambria: Parade, car show among weekend's festivities

It?s time for the annual Pinedorado celebration in Cambria, with a parade from East to West villages, the big Sunday car show, a new Monday music fest, plus classic carnival games and kiddie rides, a barbecue, many ears of fresh corn on the cob, food booths and, most of all, time for people to reconnect.

This year?s Pinedorado theme is ?The Good Ol? Days.?

Most festivities are held at or near the grounds to the west of the Veterans Memorial Building, 1000 Main St. Pinedorado is hosted by the founding Lions Club, with the assistance of other nonprofit groups. American Legion Post No. 432 again is welcoming the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Band from Southern California, back for its second year in the Pinedorado parade. This year?s event will be the third in a row featuring a Marine band.

The free Pinedorado parade has nearly 70 entries and several bands, including high school units from Atascadero, Templeton and San Luis Obispo. It starts at 9:30 a.m. today. The grand marshals are members of the pioneer Soto family, seventh-generation Cambrians who trace their California lineage to the de Anza expedition in 1776.

All proceeds from the Lions Pinedorado efforts go back to the community, in scholarships, grants to the Cambria Teen Center and donations to other nonprofit groups, service clubs and causes.

For more Pinedorado details, go to www.pinedorado.com.

63rd annual Pinedorado

Parking

Parking can be a Pinedorado pain, especially before and after the parade and during Sunday?s car show. The Veterans Memorial Building parking lot will be closed throughout the weekend.

Attendees are encouraged to carpool, walk or ride bikes to the parade, anything to reduce the crush and rush to find places to put vehicles.

At 9 a.m. Saturday, Burton Drive from Eton Drive to Main Street and the full length of Main Street will close to through traf fic and on-street parking.

Parking is available in the Rodeo Grounds area west of the Burton Drive bridge, at the J&J Heller Cambria Dog Park on Main Street at Santa Rosa Creek Road, and west of Highway 1 at Cambria Drive.

Car show

The sixth annual car show runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Veterans Memorial Building parking lot and on Cambria Drive. There will be live music. Awards will be handed out at 3 p.m.

Car show Chairman Nate Fearonce expects at least 140 cars in the show in 20 classes.

The roster of notable cars includes two 1948 Thames panel trucks (English Fords), a 2005 GTO (Australian Holden) and a 1961 supercharged Corvair Rampside pickup.

Barbecue

Barbecued chicken and Harris Ranch top-sirloin meals are a Pinedorado highlight, served starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday. This year?s addition to the menu is a steak sandwich. Corn on the cob, pie, burgers, hot dogs and other foods, along with Firestone beer and local gourmet wines, are available.

Raffle

Prizes donated by local area businesses and artists will be awarded all day on all three days. Grand prizes will be awarded at 2 p.m. Monday, including an original Sally Seago painting, a collection of local wines and a $500 gift certificate.

A silent auction will be held at the information booth all weekend.

Wilson said raffle and other proceeds go back to the community, in scholarships, grants to the Cambria Teen Center and donations to other nonprofit groups, service clubs and causes.

Monday music

The ?Live Music for Locals? entertainment has been added ?by popular demand,? Wilson said.

From noon to 2 p.m. on Monday, the band Devil?s Dandy Dogs will entertain. From 2 to 4 p.m., Jill Knight and her group will take to the stage.

Other events include:

? Waffle Breakfast Saturday, 7 to 10 a.m. Joslyn Recreation Center, 950 Main St., Cambria. Waffles, sausage, strawberries, melon, juice, coffee, tea. $8 ($4 children 12 and under).

That elusive first job - Birds on the Blog

I don?t suppose many of the readers of Birds on the Blog are [a] in the position of looking for their first job or [b] can actually remember what they did to get their first proper full-time job.

Having said that, times have changed and there is lots of advice and guidance about job hunting for first timers from school leavers and graduates. So why is that lots of these willing, able and talented potential candidates ignore even the basic words of wisdom?

Let?s give you an example.

A new business has just started up in the High Street where I live. It?s an excellent Italian bistro, home cooked food and Italian family run. For four months PRIOR to the opening, the family (along with odd builders) were constantly on the premises renovating, decorating and preparing to open. Signs went up notifying change of use, licensing arrangements and new menus. All these had the new owners full name and contact details. A smaller sign went up in the window suggesting that potential staff could leave their CVs for consideration.

Initially when the restaurant opened the family used just family for waiting service and kitchen portage. However, they quickly realised that to meet the expectations of their customers they needed more staff and that was where I came in. I was asked to short-list potential waiting staff for the busy owners.

I looked at over thirty five CVs from local applicants, mostly school, college or university leavers and this is what I found:

  • Spelling mistakes
  • Poor layouts
  • Bad presentation
  • Handwriting illegible
  • No personal contact details on CV
  • Long lists for academic and educational history
  • Job experiences listed with no skills or achievements recorded
  • No personalised accompanying letters
  • No research about the hospitality / restaurant business
  • No use of the proprietors name

It was easy to short-list to a handful of possible applicants who had (allegedly) some previous experience of working in a restaurant or bar and even a couple who mentioned they were fluent in Italian.

On closer inspection and following conversations to invite the ?possibles? to interview I discovered that one ?Italian speaking? applicant with 3 bar jobs listed actually hadn?t studied Italian at all but had visited Rome on holiday and the jobs turned out to be one job which had lasted one week in a sandwich bar. Hmmm.

I was not impressed.

Then another ?possible? was too busy to cancel going to the beach with friends to come for interview and ?could they come another time??

And so it went on.?

Did these youngsters really want a job?

What could I do?

I was contracted to the restaurant to find some likely willing local candidates to work in customer service. They needed to not only look smart but to be quick thinking, work on their own initiative as well as part of a team; be able to respond to customer enquiries and be level headed and friendly. Some mathematical skills might be required as well as good communication skills.

Where was this information on the CVs?

I?d like to think sometimes it was hidden but mostly it didn?t exist at all. Had no-one told these youngsters that they probably already have some examples of when they have spoken nicely to people, when they have worked in a team and resolved simple people problems.

No forethought at all had gone into submitting these CVs for restaurant work and sadly this is not unusual.

I wanted to take the pile of CVs and contact each and everyone of the applicants to give them feedback, give them some advice and help them really present themselves so that they could be considered for an interview and a possible first job. But of course I couldn?t and I wouldn?t.

But who will prepare our school leavers and recent graduates in the art of job hunting? Who will help them to help themselves and achieve their dream jobs?

Sometimes I despair.

So if you know any youngsters who are starting out on their job search, do them a favour. Read through their CV and check it has some meaning, some relevance and that it shows off their skills. ?Let them show they have the initiative to find their first job.

And of course has NO SPELLING MISTAKES.

Helpful Advice On Running A Home Based Business | Christopher ...

There are thousands of men and women who have considered owning a successful home business. The benefits of time flexibility and control over your destiny is a major draw. Executing this idea into a viable plan is a different lesson and will be achievable through the subsequent tips.

Having a supportive group can be very beneficial to running a home business. You will probably have to find others and start your own network. Your peers may not be in the same business but they all have a common desire and drive to run a profitable home business.

TIP! It?s always appealing to be nice about payments with customers when you first start out, but this is a bad business model. Using easy to understand contracts with penalties for late payments can help protect you financially.

In order to make sure your business is financially set, you should always have emergency funds available. Having an emergency fund will help cover surprise expenses without causing your business operations to sputter. Never withdraw money from your emergency fund unless it is absolutely necessary, and if you do, replace what you took out as soon as you can.

There are lots of home business owners congregating online. Hang out on many different web forums, including those that have nothing to do with your niche. There are some issues that are common to all home businesses, so information from business owners in an entirely different niche may still be very useful.

Working from home can become boring, so try to arrange meetings with clients. Meet up with local customers to keep personal interactions.

If your home business is a daycare, then you may need to hire some help to keep the kids in line. Without sufficient staff, you will have difficulty caring for the children properly and providing for their basic needs, such as making sure they eat, take a nap, behave appropriately and other basic tasks.

You should buy a domain name, if only to use it for your email address, making it less likely for you to mistake a business email for a personal one, or vice versa. You also need to access your email by a different method. For instance, you can read your personal mail from gmail and you can get your business mail from Outlook.

TIP! A good business plan is like your treasure map. Even should you plan on flying solo without start up financing or investors, create one anyway.

As you can see, it will require a little bit of work and dedication to make the jump. If you can manage to pull through and stick to the plan, you will be able to accurately represent your dream in the company?s image and create something that is long-lasting and profitable over the years.

Rubio: Obama's a bad president

Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida speaks during the final day of the Republican National Convention.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is one of the GOP's fastest-rising stars
  • Rubio used his Cuban immigrant parents' story as his version of the American Dream
  • "America is the story of everyday people who did extraordinary things," Rubio said
  • The story of immigrant parents or rising from humble beginnings a consistent theme at RNC

Tampa (CNN) -- Sen. Marco Rubio's convention speech Thursday introducing Mitt Romney offered voters a look at one of the Republican Party's fastest-rising stars, and brought to the fore what the conservative movement hopes its future will look like.

"I watched my first convention in 1980 with my grandfather," Rubio began, placing a date on the generational shift that he and Romney's running mate Paul Ryan represent for the GOP.

Rubio, who at 41 is a year younger than Ryan, joins the Wisconsin congressman as a young face in the party whose supporters have skewed older in the past several elections. Rubio also brings diversity to the Republican stage at a moment when Romney faces a nearly 30-point deficit among Latino voters.

Rubio used his Cuban immigrant parents' story as his version of the American Dream.

"My Dad used to tell us, 'En este pais, ustedes van a poder lograr todas las cosas que nosotros no pudimos:' In this country, you will be able to accomplish all the things we never could," he said.

Rubio's remarks in Spanish spoke to the larger theme of his optimistic address: that things are possible in America that aren't possible elsewhere.

"We're special because dreams that are impossible anywhere else come true here," Rubio said.

Elected to represent Florida in the U.S. Senate in 2010, Rubio rode a wave of tea party and grassroots support to nab the GOP Senate nomination away from the sitting GOP Gov. Charlie Crist, who had the backing of the party's establishment and started the race leading in the polls.

Rubio endorsed Romney in March, toward the end of the GOP primary contests, and has since become an effective surrogate for the GOP nominee, attacking President Barack Obama for failing to improve a stalled economy and touting Romney as a candidate with the experience to turn things around.

Rubio made a few mentions of Obama in his remarks, but the heart of his speech was in the detailed description he offered of his parents' journey from Cuba to America, and his own views of how American exceptionalism made that journey possible.

"In America we are all just a generation or two removed from someone who made our future the purpose of their lives," Rubio said. "America is the story of everyday people who did extraordinary things. A story woven deep into the fabric of our society."

"Their stories may never be famous, but in the lives they lived, you find the living essence of America's greatness," he continued.

The story of immigrant parents or rising from humble beginnings has been a consistent theme through the convention as speakers told their stories. Romney advisers have made a concerted effort to improve his standing with middle class voters, where polls show voters think Obama can better relate to them and understand their struggles.

Rubio also vouched for Romney's character, saying the Republican candidate's myriad roles in life show who Romney is as a person.

"You've heard for a long time now about Mitt Romney's success in business," the Florida Republican said. "He's a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. A generous member of his community and church. And a role model for younger Americans like myself."

In making his case for Romney, Rubio provided a pro-immigration voice for a party that has struggled in adopting a policy that appeals to Latinos.

Romney himself has maintained a bumpy track record speaking on immigration, including his proposal of "self-deportation" that emerged at a CNN debate during the primaries.

Rubio sought to soften the candidate's record on Thursday by harking back to Mitt Romney's father George and his story of successful immigration.

"His family came to America to escape revolution," Rubio said of the elder Romney, who was born in Mexico to Mormon parents and, after returning in America, became the head of American Motors and governor of Michigan and made his own bid for the Republican presidential nomination.

"They struggled through poverty and the Great Depression," Rubio said of Romney's family. "And yet he rose to be an admired businessman, and public servant. And in November, his son, Mitt Romney, will be elected president of the United States."

Rubio was widely speculated to be a potential choice for Romney's running mate, though Rubio himself denied wanting to take on that role. Others, including former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, touted Rubio's qualifications and said he would make a great pick.

Earlier this week, "The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart asked Rubio if Romney's campaign ever asked, "Hey, charisma boy, take it down a notch."

"The only thing they've asked me to do is introduce the governor," Rubio told Stewart. "They gave me 15 minutes to say anything I want."

Those 15 minutes Thursday provided Rubio, and the type of Republican he represents, a very visible place on his party's biggest night.
