Wouldn't It Be Nice To Hand Pick Your Ski Run?

Any lover of deep powder and two-plank gliding (or mono-plank for the those who love snowboarding) knows that at a certain point the time comes to leave the ski-area and the lifts behind. Heli-skiing opens up backcountry terrain where you get to find your line and go down the "run" of your choice, provided of course that the guide clears it as safe. Heli-skiing was once thought of as only for the best of the best. Today, guiding services open up the untrammeled and un-skied runs for intermediates and pros alike.

Heli-skiing requires some modifications to the ski set up. Any backcountry skier is going to have to be equipped with wide, "all-moungtain skis" that should be no less than 80cm at the waist (center of the ski). In addition, Alpine Touring or "AT" bindings that allow a free heal for hiking are ideal. Telemark bindings are also solid options for those who prefer to dip a knee in the pow. Which ever choice you make, ensure your equipment is in working order before you leave on your trip. You don't want to have to worry about equipment on an amazing adventure like this.

Beyond the skis, helmets, telescoping poles and avalanche gear are absolute necessities. An avalanche beacon, probe and shovel have to be in every skier's kit. Anyone who does not know how to use this gear gets a primer from a professional guide prior to even boarding the helicopter. This is the safety equipment you need to have with you but hope you never need to use. Your guide helps assess avalanche danger as you and the team begin picking out routes, runs and lines. Once the line is cleared as safe, the guide steps aside and has the clients head down the route, one at a time with all member watching for safety. Once everyone is down, the guide points the skis downhill and heads down to the team where everyone waits for the helicopter to come back and grab everyone for another run.

One of the premier hell-skiing areas of the world is the area of British Columbia around Revelstoke and Golden. This mountainous region is wild, untamed and perfect for hell-skiing opportunities. It is possible to get up to 8,000 to 10,000 feet of vertical in one day, all on slopes that are pristine, powdery and untouched. Imagine the pride of tackling two- to three-foot deep powder on runs all day. That is the stuff of true chalet and pares-ski tall tales and glory.

The beauty of the Revelstoke and Golden area is beyond superlatives and is nothing short of primeval and gorgeous mountain terrain. This is the place to begin any hell-skiing adventure as it is the best.Expect a continental snow pack, with dry and light powder over a solid base. When it dumps here it dumps. It is not uncommon for an average winter up in these peaks to see over 500-inches of dry powder each year.Get off the lifts and leave the ski area behind. Get into the air and heli-ski for the ultimate in skiing freedom.

Roundup: Sporting KC battles to draw

By The Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:00 p.m. ET Sept. 22, 2012

MONTREAL (AP) - Sporting KC goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen punched away Matteo Ferrari's header in added time as Montreal struggled to a 0-0 draw Saturday to keep the Impact in the MLS playoff hunt.

Montreal picked up its first point in three games since ending its team-record five-game winning streak.

Montreal goalkeeper Troy Perkins made a point-blank stop on Kei Kamara 14 minutes into the game. Justin Mapp had the Impact's best opportunity in the first half, but his shot went wide of the left post.

Sporting KC midfielder Jacob Peterson was on the bench after coming out of the game when he was shown a red card by referee Jorge Gonzalez in the 90th minute.

Arnaud and Impact midfielder Collen Warner were shown yellow cards. Warner will miss Montreal's next game in Houston on Oct. 6.

REVOLUTION 1, RED BULLS 1

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - Darrius Barnes scored his first career goal five minutes into stoppage time to give New England the draw against New York.

The Revolution (7-15-8) have just one win in 13 matches (1-8-4) since beating New York 2-0 on July 8.

Barnes' tying goal came shortly after Loel Lindpere put the Red Bulls (14-8-8) ahead in the first minute of stoppage time.

Revolution backup goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth earned the start in place of Matt Reis, and stopped three shots. Red Bulls goalkeeper Bill Guadette made four saves.

New York defender Conor Lade was ejected after he picked up his second yellow card in the 74th minute, and left the Red Bulls short-handed for the final 16 minutes.

REAL SALT LAKE 2, TIMBERS 1

SANDY, Utah (AP) - Javier Morales and Fabian Espindola both scored in the first half to lead Real Salt Lake.

Real Salt Lake (15-11-4) became the second club in MLS history to get at least 15 wins in three straight seasons and secured a spot in the playoffs for the fifth straight year.

Bright Dike scored in the 61st minute for the Timbers (7-15-8), who remained winless on the road.

Espindola put Salt Lake on the board in the 14th minute and Morales made it 2-0 in the 36th.

FIRE 2, CREW 1

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (AP) - Chris Rolfe scored two goals in a little more than 3 minutes in the first half to lead Chicago past Columbus.

Chicago (16-8-5) won its fourth straight and seventh in the last eight to move two points behind first-place Sporting Kansas City in the Eastern Conference.

Jairo Arrieta took advantage of a miscue by Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson to score in the 15th minute for Columbus (13-11-6).

Rolfe then scored twice in a span of 3:16, tying the score in the 23rd minute with a ground-hugging, left footed drive from 16 feet out. He put the Fire ahead with the game's last goal, a 15-yard that went over goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum high into the left corner of the net.

This is a traditional, Puranic, mantra invocation to awaken the energies represented by the planet Venus--or Shukra, in the Vedic Astrological system. TORONTO (AP) ? Jon Jones successfully defended his light heavyweight title, surviving an early scare to submit former champion Vitor Belfort in the fourth round at UFC 152 on Saturday night.

Belfort came close with an armbar in the first round, but Jones' reach, varied attack and ground and pound took a toll on the veteran challenger.

Unable to get his striking game going, Belfort tried to take the fight to the ground where he could use his jiu-jitsu. But he paid a price and finally fell victim to an Americana submission 54 seconds into the round. Jones improved to 17-1, and Belfort dropped to 21-10.

In the co-main event at the Air Canada Centre, Demetrious Johnson won a split decision ? 48-47, 47-48, 49-46 ? over Joseph Benavidez to become the UFC's first flyweight champion.

Jones took down Belfort down 30 seconds after the opening bell, and the Brazilian responded with an armbar attempt that looked dangerous. Jones slammed Belfort down to the canvas and eventually wriggled free as the crowd began to chant "Vitor! Vitor!"

"I've never had my arm pop like that before," said Jones, who said he would have let his arm break rather than tap out.

Jones remained on top and began to throw elbows, cutting Belfort. The doctor had a look at the battered challenger between rounds.

Belfort, who does his best work traditionally in the first round, came out punching in the second. But he had a hard time penetrating Jones' reach. The champion began to pick away at Belfort, who pulled guard later in the round to bring the fight back to the ground.

Belfort took some more elbows as he tried to get into position for another submission attempt.

Jones put him down with a kick to the rib in the third. This time, Jones let him get back up only to have Belfort pull guard again.

"Go with your punches if you want to win this fight," Belfort's cornerman yelled between rounds.

He did but pulled guard again and Jones went to work with some elbows before cranking Belfort's arm back and forcing the tapout.

"That's why he's a champion," said Belfort, who said he had hurt his rib in training.

Johnson (16-2-1) beat Benavidez (16-3) in the battle of the little men ? Johnson is 5-foot-3 and Benavidez 5-4. Benavidez looked to press, but the faster Johnson simply wore him down. He had a cut on his left eye in the third round, as well as redness on his legs from Johnson kicks.

Benavidez did get Johnson down in the fourth round, but failed to take advantage. He tried for a choke and ended up having to fight off a leg lock. Johnson opened the fifth with a pair of quick takedowns.

Both fighters raised their hands in victory after the fight, but Johnson did it faster and with more conviction.

"I was a little shocked," Johnson said about the split decision. "I've still got to prove a lot of things."

Featherweight Cub Swanson had one of the night's highlights, an eye-popping KO over highly touted Charles Oliveira thanks to a clubbing right to the temple of the American-based Brazilian.

Oliveira (16-3 with one no contest) stood still for several seconds and then toppled, prompting referee Yves Lavigne to step in at 2:40 of the first round. Oliveira left the cage with the support of a cornerman.

Swanson (18-5) had hurt him with a shot to the liver seconds before.

English middleweight Michael Bisping showed his all-around game in winning unanimously 29-28 over Brian Stann. Bisping improved to 24-4, and Stann fell to 12-5.

The card was UFC's 10th show in Canada and third in Toronto.

God and mammals: In Kenya, religious leaders pray to thwart poaching

Just before sunset on a low hill in Nairobi?s safari park, some 50 religious leaders stood in a solemn circle around a pit containing the charred remains of 13 tons of elephant ivory burnt to keep it out of poachers? hands.

Led first by an Anglican Christian, then by a Muslim imam, a trio of Hindu devotees and a Buddhist, prayers were offered, each asking for forgiveness for the damage that humans are inflicting on wildlife and the environment.

The quiet moment under the reddening sky followed a three-day gathering of African religious leaders, organized by conservationists keen to explain to these community trendsetters the reality of the current crisis in wildlife protection on the Continent. The hope is that they then return home and pass the message on to their congregations.

Think you know Africa? Take our geography quiz.

Together, the 50 men and women here for the meeting reach more than 180 million followers, according to the Alliance of Religions and Conservation, a British-based group that helped arrange the event.

?Protection of the environment and its creatures is I think one of the major points of convergence between all religions,? says Dekila Chungyalpa, a Buddhist and director of Sacred Earth, a new World Wildlife Fund program to forge closer connections between religions and conservationists. ?We as conservationists can frame the discussion on stopping poaching, for example, in legal and ecological terms. But these religious leaders can frame it in a moral context, and talk about the religious duty to act to protect the environment. As an individual in a congregation, it then becomes unavoidable that you must act.?

The illegal wildlife trade is now the world?s fifth-largest illicit transnational activity, after counterfeiting and the illegal trafficking of drugs, people, and oil, according to Global Financial Integrity in Washington.

It is worth as much as $10 billion a year, and surging demand for elephant ivory in China and Thailand and rhino horn in Vietnam made 2011 the deadliest for more than two decades for these two iconic species.

There were more large-scale ivory seizures in Africa and in destination markets last year than since records began more than 20 years ago. In South Africa alone, 448 rhinos were poached in 2011, up from just 13 four years before.

?These statistics, they are just shocking, truly few of us had any idea,? said Rev. Denis Kumbo, a Presbyterian pastor from Buea in western Cameroon. One recent afternoon, The Monitor joined him, another Presbyterian from Kenya, and a Muslim from Uganda on a three-hour safari drive around Nairobi National Park.

?There is the idea that some men go to the jungle to find meat for their family, and that is poaching,? Rev. Kumbo went on. ?Now we see that it is organized criminals, and they are using helicopters, night-vision goggles, automatic weapons. It is as sophisticated as the drugs trade.?

GETTING THE MESSAGE ACROSS

The challenge, says Hajjat A. K. Sebyala, a Muslim woman from Kampala, Uganda?s capital, is making the value of conserving wildlife clear to people who live far from wilderness areas and have other priorities.

?All this talk of elephants, of rhinos, what does this matter to people living in a city who are struggling for their daily bread?? she asks.

She tells a story of giving fellow Muslims tree seedlings as gifts during Ramadan three years ago. Everyone complained, asking why she did not offer sugar or porridge, something they could eat immediately.

?Then the second year,? she says, ?people saw the sugar had gone but the tree was still providing fruit. They wanted more seedlings. By the third year, they were fighting over the seedlings.?

Her point, she says, is that it is important first to ?improve understanding? about any given issue ? in this case, protecting the environment and helping to stop poaching.

?You will only inspire positive and sustained action from people if they first understand,? she says. ?Without understanding, there will be no change.? At that moment, the safari van, its roof popped up to allow better wildlife spotting, stopped suddenly.

Isabella Nyabua, our Kenya Wildlife Service guide, pointed into the grasslands to the left, where a huge white rhino was ponderously ambling up from a mudbath.

'THIS TRULY IS GOD'S WORK'

?This is a gift, this truly is God?s work,? Rev. Patrick Mureithi, the Kenyan Presbyterian in the car, said softly. Mrs. Sebyala stood and demanded pictures with the rhino in the distance, shooting questions at Miss Nyabua.

The excitement and the awe at seeing the animal in the wild held everyone in the vehicle rapt for several long minutes. ?This is a gift,? repeated Rev. Mureithi.

For Hamza Mtunu, director of the National Muslim Council of Tanzania, the job of all of the religious leaders attending the Nairobi event now is to try to convey that sense of spiritual awe to their congregations.

?It?s important to change people?s perception that protecting the wildlife and the environment is purely a secular concern, it?s not,? he says. ?In the Quran, we hear not just of the importance of protecting animals, but also of how it is wrong not to act if you see someone harming animals or the environment.

?Yes, we learn that we are instructed to make use of the fruits of the environment," he continues. "But killing animals for their teeth or their horn, for trinkets, is that not pure mischief and against scripture? That is what I will go home and talk about.?

As the sun finally slipped beneath the horizon and the prayers at the ivory burning memorial hung on the air, one final promise was made by the leaders gathered there.

?We as the people of God,? they said together, ?promise to work together to protect the creation of God.?

Think you know Africa? Take our geography quiz.
