Breast Cancer Awareness | NCC News

Phtoto by Jamie Hoskins

Jamie Hoskins (SYRACUSE) -Governor Cuomo signed legislation earlier this week that will help to detect breast cancer sooner. The law requires mammography services to notify patients of dense breast tissue after an exam.

Patients can then use this information to talk to their physicians about other steps to detect breast cancer.

Breast Density

?Breasts are made of two kinds of tissue well, there is tissue and fat, the more tissue you have the denser your breast are? says Director of Education at the Susan G. Komen for the Cure CNY affliate Olivia Kronhaus.

Dense breasts make it more difficult to find breast cancer using a mammogram. People with dense breasts also have an unknown relation to breast cancer.

?I?don?t think there are many women that realize that there is a difference between a dense breast and breast that is?not dense and it can affect your risk for getting breast cancer and can affect the quality of your mammogram? says Kronhaus.

Other Options

Kronhaus says other options include?sonograms and MRIs. She recommends talking to your family about its history as well as your doctor.

It is also important to do self?exams and notify your physician if you notice any changes.

?Breast cancer unfortunately is like a truck it runs people over for no reason but if we can reduce the risk, if we do have some higher risks that kind of puts us towards the edge of the street anyway from being run over? Kronhaus says.
