Preparing Mentally
Preparing mentally is a big challenge and in truth nothing can prepare you for what it?s really like to be a Father. However that said it does help to try and be as ready as you possibly can be. Here are some suggestions:
Speak to Other Fathers
They know best what it?s really like to have a child and how much life changes. Particularly good are contemporaries ? friends who were once ?like you? and have now had children. Against tough odds, Sarkozy is seeking second term (AP)
PARIS ? Nicolas Sarkozy threw himself Wednesday into what may be the toughest fight of his political career: Unpopular for years and running a feeble economy, the divisive French president announced he's running for a second term.
The man who improved French relations with the United States, rallied European leaders to ward off financial meltdown and kicked off international airstrikes in Libya is widely disliked back at home. Polls suggest his Socialist challenger will be the one attending world summits come May.
But Sarkozy is not one to give up easily. He pledged Wednesday to get the jobless back in the workforce and new reforms to ensure a "strong France" and that the French "way of life" can survive the 21st century.
"Yes, I am a candidate," he said on national TV network TF1 on Wednesday night, ending weeks of largely artificial suspense over whether he would run.
Pollsters say the president will face an uphill battle to convince voters that they should elect him again. He has only two months to change minds: The first round of the two-round vote is April 22.
For months polls have shown Sarkozy well behind Socialist Francois Hollande, who has threatened to roll back Sarkozy's reforms and is campaigning against "the world of finance." Sarkozy also has lost ground to far-right candidate Marine Le Pen of the resurgent, anti-immigrant National Front party.
A man usually more brash than humble, Sarkozy admitted Wednesday that he hasn't accomplished all he set out to when he was elected in 2007 on a wave of hope for change that would rekindle France's pride and enhance its global influence.
Five years later, France is struggling to emerge from its worst recession since World War II and the French are disillusioned. Jobless rates are nearly 10 percent, Europe's economic future is uncertain and huge government debt cost the country its prized AAA credit rating with Standard & Poor's.
In his announcement Wednesday, Sarkozy blamed French voters' troubles in part on three years of financial woes and said he would focus on getting more people working. "France cannot pretend that the crisis doesn't exist," Sarkozy said. "We have to continue to make changes."
He only outlined one solid proposal, however: a referendum on unemployment benefits and training the unemployed.
Now that he's officially a candidate, his challengers quickly lit into him. His tenure has been a "fiasco," Hollande said at a huge, boisterous rally in northern France. Le Pen criticized his "false modesty" and said he couldn't make the French forget "the serious failures" of his term.
France's two-round presidential ballot in April and May is likely to have an impact throughout the European Union. Sarkozy has been closely involved in the fight to save the euro amid a sovereign debt crisis in the bloc that has affected markets worldwide.
Earlier Wednesday, Sarkozy launched a personal Twitter account ? with the handle NicolasSarkozy ? and thanked all those "who will kindly follow me." Tens of thousands of followers joined within hours.
Sarkozy's candidacy had become one of France's worst-kept political secrets. Within minutes of his announcement, his new campaign team sent an invitation to his first rally, in the Alpine town of Annecy on Thursday.
Pollsters suggest that Sarkozy's political problems are as much of his own making as France's economic woes. Critics say Sarkozy failed to deliver on promises to improve purchasing power, hiked his own salary, and infused the gilded presidential palace with "bling" that was ill-suited for France's cultural self-image.
On the night of his 2007 election, he celebrated at one of Paris' most glitzy restaurants; before taking office, he jetted off to spend a few days on a yacht owned by a super-rich French industrialist friend.
Later in 2007, Sarkozy divorced his longtime wife and began courting Italian former supermodel Carla Bruni ? including trips to Disneyland Paris and the Middle East with reporters in tow. In early 2008, Sarkozy crudely insulted a passer-by at Paris' biggest agricultural fair, an incident caught on videotape that led many to doubt his presidential caliber.
Internationally, Sarkozy has drawn plaudits. While holding France's EU presidency, he took a key mediating role to ease tensions after the brief war between Georgia and Russia. Last year, he committed French soldiers to help support the overthrow of entrenched autocrats in Libya and Ivory Coast. He brought France back into NATO's top echelons in 2009.
Polls indicate that Hollande and Sarkozy could finish first and second in the first-round vote and then go head-to-head May 6 in the runoff. One poll last week put Hollande a staggering 20 points ahead of Sarkozy in a theoretical second round.
Sarkozy beat Hollande's former longtime partner, Socialist Segolene Royal, in the 2007 elections. Now, amid worldwide frustration at financial markets and big money, many French voters now appear ready to hand the presidency of their nuclear-armed nation to the left for the first time since the 1980s.

Airlines forecast to buy $3.5T of new jets by 2030
SINGAPORE (AP) ? Global airlines will need $3.5 trillion of new planes through 2030, with more than a third of that demand coming from Asia, Airbus's chief executive said Wednesday.
The aviation industry will require 27,800 new planes of 100-plus seating capacity between 2010 and 2030 while Asia will likely take delivery of about 9,370 of those planes worth $1.3 trillion, CEO Tom Enders said.
"Our business isn't moving to the East, it has moved to the East," Enders said during a news conference at the Singapore Airshow. "We're focused on Asia because that's where most of our growth comes from."
Airbus is wrestling longtime rival Boeing for the burgeoning Asian market. Asia provided half of Airbus's 1,600 firm orders last year. Boeing scored its biggest deal ever in November when Indonesian budget carrier Lion Air agreed to buy 230 planes for $22 billion.
Boeing said earlier this week it expects airlines will need 33,500 new planes worth $4 trillion by 2030, with Asia accounting for about 35 percent of that total.
Asia is expected to account for 33 percent of global air passengers by 2030, up from a current 28 percent, according to Airbus. Europe will likely drop to 23 percent from 27 percent and the U.S. will fall to 20 percent from 27 percent, Airbus said.
Enders reiterated that Airbus is fixing small cracks found on the wings of some of its A380s. Airbus is inspecting all 69 A380s it has delivered so far after carriers such as Singapore Airlines and Qantas reported small wing fissures in December.
Airbus delivered 22 of the super jumbos to Asian carriers last year and expects to deliver 30 more worldwide this year.
"We made a mistake and it will cost the company quite some money," Enders said, declining to specify how much money. "We understand the root causes and we'll soon have a final fix."
"This plane is absolutely safe to fly," he said.
The A320neo, which seats up to 180 passengers, has become a favorite of Asia's growing budget airline sector. Airbus delivered 546 of the planes to Asia last year.
Asian banks are also taking a bigger role in financing plane purchases, accounting for 20 percent of deliveries to the region last year, Enders said.
"If we should lose some financing capacity in Europe, I'm quite confident we can substitute that in Asia," Enders said.
Enders said Airbus isn't worried that orders may fall this year as the global economy slows because the company has an order backlog of 4,500 planes and is currently producing about 550 a year.
"We're really not concerned if we have a year or two where the order intake is considerably less than 2011," Enders said.
No large new plane orders have been announced so far at the Singapore Airshow, which runs February 14 to 19.
France-based Airbus is the world's largest aircraft manufacturer. Chicago-based Boeing is the second-largest.

Looking towards launch next week to begin dramatically improving the capacity for U.S. military mobile communications, a new breed of satellite was hauled to the towering Atlas 5 rocket assembly building today for mounting atop the powerful booster.

The 44-minute launch window stretches from 5:46 to 6:30 p.m. EST (2246-2330 GMT). Given the sunset time of 6:13 p.m., a liftoff anytime in the window could be spectacular as the 206-foot-tall rocket rises on a pillar or fire and smoke, weather permitting, of course.
With just 10 days left until flight, MUOS 1 took a middle-of-the-night road trip from the commercially-run Astrotech satellite processing campus in Titusville to the launch site aboard a trailer-like transporter.
The slow-moving drive crossed the river, went northward through Kennedy Space Center, passed by the Vehicle Assembly Building and the old space shuttle launch pad before cruising down along the beach to the Atlas rocket?s Vertical Integration Facility.
MUOS 1 was delivered to the Cape on Dec. 15 from Lockheed Martin?s factory in Sunnyvale, California, arriving inside an Air Force transport aircraft. the shipping crate was taken to Astrotech where the craft was unboxed for final testing, loaded with maneuvering propellants and encapsulated in the rocket?s nose cone.

Credit: NASA-KSC?after pulling up to the doorway of the Vertical Integration Facility this morning, technicians went to work attaching the heavy-duty lifting sling to hoist the spacecraft in the bullet-shaped fairing off the ground and atop the Centaur upper stage.
The United Launch Alliance-made rocket was assembled inside the VIF aboard a mobile launching platform over the past several weeks. It was wheeled out to the launch pad one-third-of-a-mile away last Monday for a countdown dress rehearsal and fueling exercise Tuesday before returning to the building on Wednesday to await the MUOS 1 installation.
Mating of the payload to the rocket was completed this afternoon, and then work began to affix the nose cone?s ogive section to the lower base of the fairing.
Functional checks of the spacecraft and the combined systems test between MUOS and the Atlas vehicle will occur this week to verify the payload and rocket are talking to each other properly.
The fully stacked rocket, now standing 20 stories tall, features a main stage fed with refined kerosene and liquid oxygen, five strap-on solid propellant boosters, the liquid hydrogen-powered cryogenic Centaur upper stage and a composite payload shroud 16 feet in diameter.
Rollout to the pad for launch is slated for next Wednesday morning, leading to the 7-hour countdown sequence picking up Thursday at 10:46 a.m. Fueling operations begin shortly before 4 p.m. EST.
This is the largest, most energetic version of the Atlas 5 rocket currently available. the so-called 551 configuration has been used only twice in the previous 28 flights by the vehicle, launching NASA?s new Horizons probe to Pluto in 2006 and the Jupiter-bound Juno orbiter last August.

Credit: Justin Ray/Spaceflight Now?Tipping the scales at nearly 15,000 pounds, the MUOS spacecraft needs that kind of power and three firings by the Centaur upper stage over the course of three hours to reach its targeted geosynchronous transfer orbit of 22,237 by 2,152 statute miles at 19 degrees inclination. A typical Atlas 5 ascent uses only two burns.
The craft?s size also means the medium-length option in the range of Atlas nose cones was picked for this launch that features a 9-foot extension over the usual choice.
In its launch configuration with the two power-generating solar arrays stowed on the sides, MUOS is 22 feet tall, 12 feet wide and 6 feet deep.
A pair of gold mesh antenna reflectors, built by Harris Corp., at the heart of the satellite?s communications payload will be unfurled like umbrellas on deployable boom assemblies once in space. Coverage to legacy users will transmit through a 17.7-foot-diameter reflector on the bottom of the craft and the advanced, multi-beam features of MUOS to significantly increase the transmission capacity over the Navy?s previous satellites will use a large 46-foot reflector atop the satellite.
Lockheed Martin is producing five MUOS satellites ? four primes and one in-orbit spare ? to replace the Navy?s current generation of Ultra High Frequency Follow-On spacecraft that were launched by Atlas rockets from 1993 through 2003. Eight of the 11 satellites remain in operation today.
The sophisticated MUOS system was designed around the commercial 3G cellular telephone architecture to substantially increase the number of users and amount of communications that can be routed to military forces.
?MUOS is designed to allow backward compatibility with legacy UHF terminals while providing a next generation waveform to support ?communications on the move? capabilities,? said Mark Pasquale, Lockheed Martin vice president and MUOS program manager. ?This ensures that legacy systems remain compatible with the MUOS architecture, while offering the technological advancements needed by its military users.?

Credit: Lockheed Martin?MUOS will offer 10 times greater communications capacity to the mobile warfighter over the UHF F/O constellation to relay narrowband tactical information such as voice calls, data messaging, file transfers and email on rates of up to 384 Kilobits per second. It also enables users to communicate with smaller devices.
?Utilizing commercial 3G cell phone and satellite technology, MUOS will provide warfighters ?on the move? point-to-point and netted communications services at enhanced data rates and priority-based access to on-demand voice, video and data transfers,? said Pasquale.
It will take about three months to maneuver the craft into the proper orbital position and conduct in-space testing before becoming operational.
?A single MUOS satellite provides more communication access than the current UHF constellation. this capability is critical to the U.S. military because they depend on reliable, targeted communication to complete missions and to protect service members worldwide,? said Pasquale.
?MUOS is designed to support those requirements by providing users narrowband communications with greater mobility, higher data rates and improved operational availability.?

The UHF communications provide command and control between combatant leaders and their warfighters, connectivity to tactical forces, communications for Special Operations and support to rapid deployments of land, air and naval forces worldwide.

LONDON (Reuters) - British scientists said on Friday that a "Rapunzel Number" may have helped them to crack a problem that has perplexed humanity since Leonardo da Vinci pondered it 500 years ago.
Scientists from the University of Cambridge and the University of Warwick said they had devised a "Ponytail Shape Equation," which when calculated using the Rapunzel Number and a measure of the curliness of hair can be used to predict the shape of any ponytail.
Cambridge's Professor Raymond Goldstein told Reuters that he and his colleagues took account of the stiffness of individual hairs, the effects of gravity and the average waviness of human hair to come up with their formula.
The Rapunzel Number provides a key ratio needed to calculate the effects of gravity on hair relative to its length.
"That determines whether the ponytail looks like a fan or whether it arcs over and becomes nearly vertical at the bottom," Goldstein said in a telephone interview.
The research also took into account how a bundle of hair is swelled by the outward pressure which arises from collisions between the component hairs.
Scientists said the work has implications for understanding the structure of materials made up of random fibers, such as wool and fur and will have resonance with the computer graphics and animation industry, where the representation of hair has been a challenging problem.
"Our findings extend some central paradigms in statistical physics and show how they can be used to solve a problem that has puzzled scientists and artists ever since Leonardo da Vinci remarked on the fluid-like streamlines of hair in his notebooks 500 years ago," Goldstein said.
The research was conducted by Goldstein, Professor Robin Ball from the University of Warwick and their colleagues. It will be presented to the American Physical Society in Boston on February 28.

Planning is a major component of any organization and without objectives, all is left to chance. Amazingly, many corporations have adopted the ?let?s see? mentality which has resulted in their loss of the strategic edge and advantage. This may seem far-fetched but actions speak louder than words and the truth is revealed through those actions.
When asked what their objectives are, many organizations respond, ?To make money?. This is a bit of a clich?, which does not represent a true objective. There are many ways to make money for an organization; some positive (?Be the best at fulfilling the customers needs?) and negative (?Cut salaries and jobs?). Both will ?make money? for the company but the positive objective is too vague and the negative objective could be devastating to the company.
Without clear objectives, different departments may waste resources or even compete with one another; which is counterproductive and a serious problem. Objectives are important to not only lead the company to attainment but also to provide a way to get there, while measuring the progress along the way. Objectives should be well thought out and a serious analysis of the company should be made during the process. For leadership to arbitrarily create an objective that ?sounds impressive? or will ?make shareholders happy? may very well be the ?nail in the coffin of their career?.
Objectives must be created by leadership and cascaded throughout the organization. The objectives should be measurable (achievement / timeliness), attainable, easily understood, specific, realistic, in line with the company vision (Figure 6) and communicated to everyone in the company.
While this seems like Business 101 at the Community College level, which sounds very elementary, many companies have omitted these important planning issues. Objectives do not create themselves and from the CEO to the hourly paid employee, all should know, understand and work to attain the objectives. Strategic planning represents the idea of forward -looking leadership and a workforce in step with the planned objectives. Everyone should know the objectives and the only way to know exactly where you are as a company, is to measure those objectives. It should be no secret as to the progress along the way. It must begin with the Vision.
Analyze your company at the high level. Answer the next few questions.What is your company?s Vision?Is it easily understood?Is it exciting to stakeholders / shareholders?Is it clear and comprehensive in meaning?Does it set the tone for employees?Does it create unity of purpose?Is it challenging and attainable?What is your company?s Mission Statement?Is it your company?s core purpose?Is it inspiring?Is it market-focused?Does it reflect what you want the company remembered for?Can it be measured?What are your company?s Guiding Principles?Do the Guiding Principles provide the framework within which the company will pursue and achieve its Mission?Are these values shared throughout the organization?
What are your company?s Broad Strategic Objectives?Are they general enough to prevent frequent revisions?Are they easily understood?Are they in the 5 ? 10 year time frame (3 ? 5 is actually better)?Do they support the Mission Statement?Are they more specific than the Mission Statement?What are your company?s Tactical Objectives?Will they achieve the Broad Strategic Objectives?Can they be accomplished within a defined time period?Are they quantifiable and measurable?If you do not have all of these elements or you answered ?no? to any of the questions, you may need to review, amend and implement as needed.
Strategic Planning begins with collecting and arranging facts and data from the Strategic Thinking process. The most commonly used tool by upper management to collect the information is the SWOT Analysis (Organizational Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities & Threats). This tool helps to determine the company?s position. The Strengths / Weaknesses are usually viewed as internal and the Opportunities and Threats are usually external.
For example, the limited cash flow of a company would be categorized as a Weakness while owning 85% of a market share would definitely be a Strength. Knowing trends in market growth will also be useful in preparing the SWOT. A key concern when preparing a SWOT is a lack of objectivity. This may be as simple as making unfounded assumptions that are not supported with facts and data or downplaying a true threat. Intuition and hopes should not be used in preparing the SWOT. If you cannot measure it, you cannot accurately predict it. If the item may become a Threat, treat it as such to be safe.Once the SWOT is complete, it is time to form the framework of the Vision Statement.
The Vision StatementThe Vision Statement is one of the most misunderstood of the Strategic Planning tools. The vision of the organization represents the ?dreams that can come true?. The formation of the statement should include input from all senior leaders and it tells where the company is going in the future. It can be expressed as monetary, competitive or superlative and should be for at least a five-year timeframe.An example of a Vision Statement: ?To become number one or number two in all markets we serve and revolutionize our company to have the strengths of a big company while combining the leanness and agility of a small company.? The Mission StatementIf the Vision statement represents dreams that can come true, the Mission Statement goes one-step further to describe the organization, what it does and where it is going in the future.# The Mission defines the purpose of the company and is often combined with the Guiding Principles or Values Statement. An example of a Mission Statement: ?Our purpose is to delight our customers by delivering a quality service, in a cost ? efficient manner through the contributions of all associates.? The Guiding Principles (Values)These principles provide a methodology for the pursuit and attainment of the organization?s Mission.Usually constructed into five to seven core values, the Guiding Principles represent shared ideas and give shareholders and stakeholders alike, a representative summary or abstract of business, market, financial and in some cases, moral stance.Example of Guiding Principles: Our company places customer loyalty as our highest priority, even above customer satisfaction;We will consistently exceed our customers expectations;We will actively engage our employees in our business decisions;We treat our stakeholders as partners;Our company remains environmentally friendly and strives to operate with a passive impact on the environment;Our company will treat our employees with dignity, respect and in a professional manner; We will continuously improve our internal and external processes, procedures and relationships.
Broad Strategic ObjectivesA goal is usually long term (3 ? 5 years) while an objective is short term. Objectives ?get the job done?, so to speak.The Broad Strategic Objectives are more specific than the Mission and they commonly fall into the realm of ?what? instead of ?how?. Considerable thought and planning should go into the creation of these objectives as to prevent frequent rewrites. Strategic Objectives should be easy to understand and apply by all employees. They should represent a 3 ? 5 year period, although 5 ? 10 years is perfectly acceptable.
The objectives must also be aligned with the organization?s Guiding Principles and they must support the Mission Statement.As implied by the name, Broad Strategic Objectives are strategic by nature, which requires senior leadership to be intimately involved in the planning, construction, implementation and evaluation of the objectives. Once created, these objectives take on a life of their own. Without top ? down support, these objectives will simply be ?warm and fuzzy? words. No business has ever succeeded by sitting around the campfire singing ?Kum Ba Ya? (except maybe the YMCA). Without actions, these words will not accomplish anything.
The use of Scenario Planning is also a good tool to assist with creating Strategic Objectives. When developing objectives, leadership may be prone to Groupthink, overconfidence or tunnel vision.The Brainstorming technique will help create scenarios that will logically consider cause and effect situations. Once the different scenarios are visualized, appropriate contingency plans can be developed. This works especially well when creating a Risk Management Profile.
Tactical ObjectivesThe last strategic planning level is represented by the Tactical Objectives. These objectives are well-defined methods for achieving the Broad Strategic Objectives. It is usually at this point in which the focus begins to shift to allocation of resources, budgetary assignment and funding.
As the name implies, the tactics are described and the methodology defined. One of the most important attributes for the objectives is being ?measurable?. It is very important to keep that in mind when creating the objectives. ?If it cannot be measured, it cannot be managed?.
These objectives must be specific and detailed. There should be no misunderstandings within the organization and the draft of objectives should be cascaded through the organization for comments and/or feedback. If there are questions, or if the objectives are too vague, they should be amended before deployment. This process may take several amendments and additional objectives may be created from the solicited feedback gathered.
Factors To ConsiderThere are certain factors to consider during strategic planning. There are many tangible and intangible elements that require thought and a thorough understanding before the planning phase is complete.The entire planning phase may last six months or perhaps more depending upon the complexity of the organizational structure and market.
Professor Michael Porter of Harvard Business School developed a list of competitive forces, which should be analyzed to exploit the results of the SWOT analysis. Application of the list to the SWOT will help define the areas that need more attention and the ones that need adjustments.
The Five Competitive Forces are:The threat of new market entrants ? This will have a direct effect on your business and planning the contingency is the best possible mitigation method. The six possible barriers should be considered:Economies of Scale: A new entrant into the market must be prepared to compete on a large scale which requires exceptional operating techniques;Product Differentiation: If brand loyalty is an obstacle, this may force new entrants to invest substantially to counter brand loyalty effects;Capital Investments: Large investments in inventory, marketing, R & D, etc. may be required;Learning Curve: This cost advantage may occur from being further down the learning curve and having assets such as experience and intellectual property rights;Distribution Channels: Existing distributors may be closed or open to new entrants;Government Policies: Regulated industries may enjoy protection from new entrants but changes in regulation may create new entrants who can fill a void or vacuum.
Power of Suppliers ? A supplier will have a better bargaining position if:The industry is dominated by fewer companies;The supplier?s product is unique;The industry is not of major importance to the supplier;There are no substitutes for the product.Power of Customers ? Customers and suppliers are considered to be on opposing sides in an industry. The customer becomes powerful if:Economies of Scale are large and purchases are large;The product is a small part of the buyer?s total cost;The buyer is in a ?low cost? industry and must buy accordingly.Substitute products ? A cap on potential profits may result and cause price reductions throughout the industry.Industry rival ? Significant competition may create price wars and collapse the market profits. Industry rivals have the following characteristics:Numerous market competitors;Slow industry growth;Product is a commodity;Excessive capacity;The exit barriers (cost of leaving the industry) are too high;There is intense rivalry.
A company can use this tool to better position itself in a market, protected by the capabilities and advantages, and it can reduce the threats while taking advantage of future business opportunities.One other consideration is the stakeholder. The objectives and goals must be aligned with the needs of the stakeholder. A stakeholder may be stockholders, leadership, employees, suppliers and customers. ISO also recognizes the community and society as a stakeholder.
It is important to consider these groups collectively and individually to ascertain the needs and ensure the decisions address their needs.
