230 Million Year Old Arthropods Found Preserved in Amber ...

amber-preserved-arthropods-triassic

Arthropods from the Triassic period have been discovered preserved in amber. They are 100 million years older than previous amber inclusions. The two mites and one fly were found in millimeter-scale droplets of amber from northeastern Italy.

Researchers published their findings in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Arthropods are invertebrate animals including insects, arachnids and crustaceans. The specimens were preserved with microscopic fidelity, allowing the estimation of the amount of evolutionary change over millions of years. Arthropods are more than 400 million years old, but before now the oldest record of these animals in amber dates to about 130 million years, in the Cretaceous period.

The amber droplets range between 2 to 6 mm in length, were buried in the Dolomite Alps of northeastern Italy and excavated by Eugenio Ragazzi and Guido Roghi of the University of Padova. Over 70,000 droplets were screened for inclusions by a team of German scientists led by Alexander Schmidt, of the Georg-August University in G?ttingen.

Two of the specimens are a new species of mites, Triasacarus fedelei and Ampezzoa triassica. They are the oldest fossils of a group called Eriophyoidea, which has about 3,500 living species, all of which feed on plants and sometimes form abnormal growth called galls on their bodies.

amber-droplets

T. fedelei and A. triassica fed on a now extinct conifer, but 97% of today?s gall mites feed on flowering plants. These mites existed before the appearance of flowering plants. The mites seemed to have evolved and endured even when flowering plants entered the environment. The fly couldn?t be identified because some of its body parts weren?t well preserved.

There was a huge change in flora and fauna in the Triassic, because it was right after one of the most acute extinction pulses in the geological time record, the Permian-Triassic extinction event, which occurred 252.28 Ma. This could help elucidate how life continued to evolve.

Tig Notaro On Dating With Breast Cancer | The Frisky

The doctor has prepared me for more weight loss and losing my hair. Dating isn?t the main focus here, but it?s fresh in my mind, because I just got out of a relationship. So I?m just sitting here, thinking, ?Wow, not only am I single, but I?m about to be four pounds and bald.?

?Comedienne Tig Notaro went onstage last month in Los Angeles and opened her set by saying ?Thank you, I have cancer, thank you.? The audience was shocked. In this week?s New York Times Magazine, Notaro talks about how she had a life-threatening infection, lost her mother to a freak accident days after leaving the hospital, and then was diagnosed with breast cancer. To cope, she did what she does best: got up onstage and laughed about it. It really struck me from this interview, jokes aside, that Tig Notaro is an extremely strong person. Very much hoping for she gets well soon ? and stops being on the receiving end of life?s shit stick.?[New York Times Magazine] [Image: NYT Magazine]

Raid book shows bin Laden raid up close

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A Navy SEAL's firsthand account of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden pulls back the veil on the secret operations conducted almost nightly by elite American forces against terrorist suspects.

Former SEAL Matt Bissonnette's account contradicted in key details the account of the raid presented by administration officials in the days after the May 2011 raid in Abbotabad, Pakistan, that killed the al-Qaida leader, and raised questions about whether the SEALs followed to the letter the order to only use deadly force if they deemed him a threat.

Bissonnette wrote that the SEALs spotted bin Laden at the top of a darkened hallway and shot him in the head even though they could not tell whether he was armed. Administration officials have described the SEALs shooting bin Laden only after he ducked back into a bedroom because they assumed he might be reaching for a weapon.

Military experts said Wednesday that if Bissonnette's recollection is accurate, the SEALS made the right call to open fire on the terrorist mastermind who had plenty of time to reach for a weapon or explosives as they made their way up to the third level of the house where he hid.

Bissonnette wrote the book, "No Easy Day," under the pseudonym Mark Owen as one of the men in the room when they killed bin Laden. The book is to be published next week by Penguin Group (USA)'s Dutton imprint. The Associated Press purchased a copy Tuesday.

For years, the primary weapon in the war on terror has been unmanned drones firing missiles from the sky. But the Bissonnette book reveals a more bloody war waged by special operators, one the public almost never gets to see close up.

The book offers intimate details of a special operations mission. The most memorable scenes are also the most human moments. Bissonnette describes one of the SEALs dressing the wounds of a woman who was shot when she lunged toward the SEALs. In another scene, a terrified mother clutches her child and a young girl identifies the dead man as Osama bin Laden, seemingly unaware of the significance of those words.

In that regard, the bin Laden raid seems destined to become an anachronism. Nearly every top al-Qaida figure killed by the United States since the 9/11 attacks has died in a remote-controlled strike by unmanned drone aircraft ? their deaths seen back in Washington via high-definition video. An estimated 80 top terrorist leaders have been killed in places like Pakistan and Yemen, according to The Long War Journal.com, which tracks such airborne strikes.

Special operations troops often conduct raids similar to the bin Laden strike a dozen times a night in Afghanistan, and previously in Iraq, killing thousands of mostly mid- and lower-level terrorists. It's all part of a war on terror that is winding down and giving way to the drone war outside traditional war zones, given the scheduled drawdown of most U.S. troops in Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

"No Easy Day" shows how routine such operations have become. But the public rarely hears about them. This raid to capture bin Laden, though, was historic.

The SEALS, according to Bissonnette's description, were prepared as they had been in other raids for a gunfight in close quarters, which likely would last only a few seconds, with no margin for error. By the time the SEALs reached the top floor of bin Laden's compound, roughly 15 minutes had passed, giving the terror leader adequate time to strap on a suicide vest or get a gun, he said.

Bissonnette says he was directly behind a point man going up the stairs in the pitch black hallway. Near the top, he said, he heard two silenced shots fired by the first SEAL into the hallway. He wrote that the point man had seen a man peeking out of a door on the right side of the hallway, but Bissonnette could not tell from his vantage point whether the bullets hit the target.

The author writes that the man ducked back into his bedroom and the SEALs followed, only to find him crumpled on the floor in a pool of blood with a hole visible on the right side of his head and two women wailing over his body. Once they wiped the blood off his face, they were convinced it was bin Laden.

Bissonnette says the point man pulled the two women out of the way and shoved them into a corner. He and the other SEALs trained their guns' laser sights on bin Laden's still-twitching body, shooting him several times until he lay motionless.

The SEALs later found two weapons stored by the doorway, untouched, the author said.

National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor late Tuesday would not comment on the apparent contradiction between the administration's account and the book's version.

Bissonnette writes that during a pre-raid briefing, an administration lawyer told them that they were not on an assassination mission. According to Bissonnette, the lawyer said if bin Laden did not pose a threat, they should detain him.

"If they didn't feel like there was a threat, they would have captured him," co-author Kevin Maurer told the AP on Wednesday. "But from when they first hit the ground, all the way until they got to the third deck, they had encountered armed men, which made the use of force essential," said Maurer, a former AP reporter.

Bissonnette writes that none of the SEALs were fans of President Barack Obama and knew that his administration would take credit for ordering the raid. One of the SEALs said after the mission that they had just gotten Obama re-elected by carrying out the raid. But he says they respected him as commander in chief and for giving the operation the go-ahead.

In an interview scheduled to air Sunday on CBS' "60 Minutes," Bissonnette said the book was "not political whatsoever" and not timed to influence the upcoming national elections. He said it was to commemorate the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks and credit those whose work made the mission to get bin Laden a success.

"My worry from the beginning is, you know, it's a political season. This book is not political whatsoever. It doesn't bad-mouth either party, and we specifically chose Sept. 11 to keep it out of the politics. If these ? crazies on either side of the aisle want to make it political, then shame on them."

CBS Bissonnette was disguised and his voice altered for the interview. The network used only his pseudonym and not his name.

A former deputy judge advocate general for the Air Force defended the decision to shoot the man the SEALs saw in the hallway.

"In a confined space like that where it is clear that there are hostiles, the SEALs need to take reasonable steps to ensure their safety and accomplish the mission," said the former JAG, ret. Maj. Gen. Charlie Dunlap, who now teaches at Duke University law school.

The Pentagon and the CIA, which commanded the mission, are examining the manuscript for possible disclosure of classified information, and could take legal action against Bissonnette.

In a statement provided to the AP, the SEAL author says he did "not disclose confidential or sensitive information that would compromise national security in any way."

The book does include information not previously reported about specific CIA officers' involvement in the raid.

Bissonnette's real name was first revealed by Fox News and confirmed to the AP.

Jihadists on al-Qaida websites have posted purported photos of the author, calling for his murder.

Beliefs drive investors more than preferences

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? If experts thought they knew anything about individual investors, it was this: their emotions lead them to sell winning stocks too soon and hold on to losers too long.

But new research casts doubt on this widely held theory that individual investors' decisions are driven mainly by their feelings toward losses and gains. In an innovative study, researchers found evidence that individual investors' decisions are primarily motivated by their beliefs about a stock's future.

"The story is not about whether an investor hates losing or loves gains -- it's not primarily a story about preferences," said Itzhak Ben-David, co-author of the study and assistant professor of finance at Ohio State University's Fisher College of Business.

"It is a story about information and speculation. The investor has a belief about where a stock is headed and that's what he acts on. Investors act more on their beliefs than their preferences."

Ben-David conducted the study with David Hirshleifer of the Paul Merage School of Business at the University of California, Irvine. Their results appear in the August 2012 issue of the journal Review of Financial Studies.

The researchers studied stock transactions from more than 77,000 accounts at a large discount broker from 1990 through 1996 and did a variety of analyses that had never been done before. They examined when investors bought individual stocks, when they sold them, and how much they earned or lost with each sale.

The result was a radical rethinking of why individual investors sell winning stocks and hold on to losers.

The findings don't mean that investors don't have an aversion to losses and a desire to sell winners, Ben-David said. But the trading data suggests that these feelings aren't dominating their decisions.

"People have a variety of reasons for trading stocks, which may include tax issues, margin calls, and an aversion to losses. These all may play a role, but what we show that beliefs are dominant for the trading of retail investors."

The tendency to sell winners too early and to keep losers too long has been called the "disposition effect" by economists.

"The disposition effect has been well-documented. The question is what we make of it. A lot of people look at the data and interpret it as meaning that the typical retail investor is irrational, simply reacting to their feelings about gains and losses," he said.

"But what we find is that, looking at the data, we can't really learn about their preferences. We don't learn about what they like or don't like. Surely, they don't like to lose money -- but their reasons for selling stocks are more complex than that."

The simplest test was to see what investors do when a stock is trading just slightly higher or lower than the price they paid -- in other words a small winner or a small loser.

If investors really did make stock trades based simply on their pleasure in making money and their aversion to realizing losses, a small winner should lead to more sales than a small loser.

But this study found that investors were not clearly more likely to sell when it was a small winner than when it was a small loser.

Another piece of evidence against the theory that investors' decisions are driven by their aversion to realizing losses was the fact that, the more a stock lost value, the more likely investors were to sell it.

"If investors had an aversion to realizing losses, larger losses should reduce the probability they would sell, but we found the opposite -- larger losses were associated with a higher probability of selling," Ben-David said.

Interestingly, the stocks that investors sell the least are those that did not have a price change since purchase.

Another clue is the fact that men and frequent traders were more likely than others to sell winning stocks quickly to reap their profits and sell losers quickly to cut their losses.

"Past research has shown that overconfidence in investing is associated with men and frequent traders," Ben-David said. "They have a belief in their superior knowledge and so you would expect them to buy and sell more quickly than others as they speculate on stock prices. That's exactly what we found. They are engaged in belief-based trading."

The researchers also examined when investors were more likely to buy additional shares of a stock that they had previously purchased. They found that the probability of buying additional shares is greater for shares that lost value than it was for shares that gained value.

That shouldn't happen if investors are really acting on emotions rather than beliefs, Ben-David said.

"If you buy additional shares of a stock that has lost value, that suggests you are acting on your beliefs that the stock is really a winner and other people have just not realized it yet," he said.

"You wouldn't buy additional shares of a losing stock if your biggest motivation was to avoid realizing losses."

However, Ben-David noted that just because investors act on beliefs rather than feelings doesn't mean they are acting rationally.

"They may be overconfident in their own abilities. It is a different kind of irrationality from being averse to selling losers," Ben-David said.

This study's suggestion that investors act more on beliefs than preferences is likely to make waves in the economics profession, he said.

"In economics, these two stories are very different. Beliefs and preferences are very different concepts, and it is important to distinguish them and how they affect investors. Many economists had thought that an irrational aversion to selling losers was crucial for the trading decisions of retail investors."

Living in poverty is often accompanied by conditions that can negatively influence cognitive development. Is it possible that being bilingual might counteract these effects? Although previous research has shown that being bilingual enhances executive functioning in middle-class children, less is known about how it affects lower income populations.

In a study forthcoming in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, psychological scientist Pascale Engel de Abreu of the University of Luxembourg and colleagues examine the effects of speaking two languages on the executive functioning of low-income children. "Low-income children represent a vulnerable population," says Engel de Abreu. "Studying cognitive processes in this population is of great societal importance and represents a significant advancement in our understanding of childhood development."

Existing research, conducted with older bilingual children and bilingual adults from middle class backgrounds, suggests that knowing two languages may have different effects on different aspects of executive functioning: while being bilingual seems to have a positive influence on the ability to direct and focus attention (control), researchers have found no such benefit for how people encode and structure knowledge in memory (representation). Engel de Abreu and her colleagues hypothesized that this pattern would also hold for younger bilingual children who were low-income.

A total of 80 second graders from low-income families participated in the study. Half of the children were first or second generation immigrants to Luxembourg, originally from Northern Portugal, who spoke both Luxembourgish and Portuguese on a daily basis. The other half of the children lived in Northern Portugal and spoke only Portuguese.

The researchers first tested the children's vocabularies by asking them to name items presented in pictures. Both groups completed the task in Portuguese and the bilingual children also completed the task in Luxembourgish.

To examine how the children represented knowledge in memory, the researchers asked them to find a missing piece that would complete a specific geometric shape. The researchers also measured the children's memory, using two different tasks to see how much visual information the children could keep in mind at a given time.

The children then participated in two tasks that looked at their ability to direct and focus their attention when distractions were present. In the first task, they had to find and match 20 pairs of spacecrafts as quickly as possible, a task that depended on their ability to ignore all the non-matching spacecrafts. In the second task, the children were presented with a row of yellow fish on a computer screen and they had to press a button to indicate which direction the fish in the center was facing. The other fish either pointed in the same or opposite direction of the fish in the middle.

Although the bilingual children knew fewer words than their monolingual peers, and did not show an advantage for representation tasks, they performed better on the control tasks than did the monolingual children, just as the researchers hypothesized.

"This is the first study to show that, although they may face linguistic challenges, minority bilingual children from low-income families demonstrate important strengths in other cognitive domains," says Engel de Abreu.

The researchers believe that the findings could inform efforts to reduce the achievement gap between children of different socioeconomic backgrounds. "Our study suggests that intervention programs that are based on second language teaching are a fruitful avenue for future research," says Engel de Abreu. "Teaching a foreign language does not involve costly equipment, it widens children's linguistic and cultural horizons, and it fosters the healthy development of executive control."

"Our study suggests that intervention programs that are based on second language teaching are a fruitful avenue for future research," says Engel de Abreu. "Teaching a foreign language does not involve costly equipment, it widens children's linguistic and cultural horizons, and it fosters the healthy development of executive control."

* A wide bucket of cool water * 12- 14 inch Squeegee with new blade * A mop to apply water to window surface * Detergent. There are many ?trade secrets' and some even use just water. If you are going to use a detergent it needs to be soft on the hands and one that creates minimal soap suds. * A clean rag free of lint and fluff * A pole attachment for squeegee * A new or well maintained Ladder

Please visit interclean.com.au if you want to purchase quality window cleaning products for competitive prices Australia wide.

2. Horizontal Strokes- Preferred method of window cleaning

* Starting in one of the top corners of the window, the horizontal stroke crosses the breadth of the window. Always wipe dry the squeegee blade with a dry cloth/microfiber towel. Then begin the next stoke with a slight overlap. Professional window washers overlap their strokes so as to ensure that no part of the window is missed.

* Hold the squeegee on a slight angle forcing the water down the window. This makes gravity your friend and minimises water slipping over the top of the squeegee causing water mark lines.

3. Vertical strokes- Method used when space is limited

Vertical strokes are more difficult because it is often harder to control the blade for the length of the window but this is acceptable where window space is limited. Each stoke should begin at the top of the window and overlap slightly.

4. Wipe around window edges with cloth.

To finish off each window, wipe around the edges of the window with a dry clean cloth/microfiber towel. It will only take a moment but will make a huge difference to the final presentation. Make sure the frame of the window is cleaned and dried because dirty runoff water from the upper window may slowly dribble down onto the windows below and quickly ruin your good work.

With these simple tips you results will improve.

How many of your insurance agency personal lines customers have ...

Unfortunately, it is not difficult to find real life insurance stories that detail?substantial claims. Certainly a fair number of these are on the personal lines side involving? homeowners, auto, boating or? some?type of recreational ?toy?. Face it,?many of these types of claims?can occur to any of your?customers. If that were to happen, would they be adequately protected?

How many of your personal lines customers have a personal umbrella? Hopefully you know the answer to that question but if you don?t, your agency management system should be able to provide the answer without much difficulty.

Next?develop a sales campaign that?educates these customers (without an umbrella) what an umbrella does and how much it would probably cost. Presuming that you have the current underlying coverage information (# of cars, homes, etc.) and that the underlying limits satisfy the carrier requirement, determining the premium?should be easily accomplished.?It is probably best to write to each customer providing this information advising them, if they are interested, to contact the agency to begin the application process. This written communication could be key if a problem developed down the road.

If it would be necessary for the customer to increase one or more of their underlying limits to satisfy the requirement, include this information?(and cost) in the letter.

When you provide them with a premium quotation,?either include multiple limit options or some statement that readily makes them aware that higher limits are available. If you were to only provide a $1,000,000 option, this might lead the customer to believe that $1,000,000 is enough. Claims over $1,000,000 certainly have and can occur to anyone.

What if no one buys the coverage? In all honesty, there is no doubt that additional sales will result but for those?electing to not buy the coverage, your agency has now further strengthened your E&O position through this communication.

For all new customers of the agency, be sure to discuss?umbrella coverage and / or include it on the various proposals. If the customer chooses?not to purchase the umbrella, look to get the customer?s sign-off and then retain this document in your agency management system.

One other note: a common E&O claim scenario involving personal umbrellas deals with ?gaps in coverage? between the actual underlying limits and those?limits required. As a result, be sure that the necessary underlying limits are in place at all times.

Irene's big mystery: Where is Marble Arvidson?

It hadn't yet begun raining when a teenager named Marble Arvidson pinned a note to the door of his bedroom in a foster home, saying he'd be back in half an hour.

By the time he was reported missing the next day, police officers were overwhelmed by the deluge wrought by the remnants of Hurricane Irene, the state's worst natural disaster in generations.

And so, a year after that last Saturday in August, the friendly but guarded 17-year-old with long blond hair, a lanky build, an unpredictable temper and a penchant for black clothing remains missing in what may become Irene's most enduring mystery.

"I want to assume he just chose to leave and he's just somewhere else," said Dan Nichols, 18, a friend from the streets of Brattleboro. "He's most likely gone far, because lots of towns around here know about the situation. There are missing persons posters everywhere."

Did he get high at a favorite hangout, slip on a rock, get washed away in a raging stream? Did he commit suicide? Was he abducted and killed? Or did the near-adult cleverly decide the coming storm was a golden opportunity to slip out of his hardscrabble life and quietly build a new one?

Authorities and those closest to him simply don't know. They're left only with what little they know about a visitor to his door before he disappeared and the details of the life that led him to the red clapboard house at state Route 9 and Sunset Lake Road.

___

Marble's extended family is from western Massachusetts, but he was born in California. His mother, Sigrid Arvidson, thought the name would be whimsical and attention-getting.

"It's got that ring to it; it's a strong name and stuff," she said. "I loved marbles."

She and the boy moved back to Massachusetts when he was 1; she was escaping an abusive relationship and struggling with alcoholism.

Marble's great-grandparents raised him until he was 5 or 6; then he began spending time with his sober mother, eventually living with her again full-time. In 2001, she moved to a house in the country in Halifax, Vt., where she also found better schooling for Marble.

In early adolescence, the boy began working with a male mentor, meant to provide a role model he didn't have.

That lasted until he was 14, when an adolescent power struggle about cleaning his room and other restrictions on the life of the growing teenager erupted into violence. He took a splitting maul to the outside of the house, smashing the porch and parts of the foundation, causing about $3,000 in damage, his mother said.

Marble then went into traditional foster care. His third and final placement was the red house in West Brattleboro, a neighborhood in a town of about 7,500 in southeastern Vermont known for its hippie culture and left-wing politics.

Still in the custody of the Vermont Department of Children and Families, Marble lived with a mentor ? a legal guardian in his 20s ? along with another teenager and that teen's mentor.

He would hang out by the regional transportation center, situated near a stream called the Whetstone Brook. When last seen, he was about to enter his last year at Brattleboro Union High School, where he was making Bs and thinking about college.

"He did struggle with his emotions, he did struggle with his frustration and anger, and sometimes he needed outside help beyond what a family member or a mentor could give him, but I do believe those options were available to him and they were utilized," said his aunt Patricia Kittredge, of Belchertown, Mass., one of the top noncommissioned officers in the Massachusetts National Guard.

On Aug. 27, a Saturday, Irene was churning up the coast of the Carolinas on its way to New York City and New England.

Marble pinned a note to his bedroom door around 2 in the afternoon, saying he was "going to frolic with some friendly gremlins," and left the house with a man who appeared to be in his mid-20s, someone he knew, who might have been wearing a black baseball cap, two of his roommates later remembered.

An hour or so after Marble left, his girlfriend came looking for him, but he wasn't there. At first, people thought he was with friends.

Later that afternoon, it started to rain. The next day, Sunday, Vermont was dealing with a deluge that dropped more than 7 inches of rain onto the Green Mountains, upstream from Brattleboro.

"I think like many parents and people, you get a little nervous and you go, 'You know, he's probably over at a friend's house,'" Kittredge said. "Do I think that they probably should have taken it more seriously Saturday night? Yes, but I can understand why they didn't."

High wind, rains lash Florida Keys as Isaac strengthens

On Sunday, lots of calls were made to lots of his friends.

"'Hey, he still didn't come home. We can't find him,'" Kittredge said. "And this is in the middle of, we have no streets, we can't get anywhere, communication is down and everybody is overwhelmed."

Police say Marble was reported missing by his foster parent on Sunday.

The first thing police did was alert other agencies Marble was missing, Brattleboro Police Chief Eugene Wrinn said. Officers met with the foster parent and others, but police were dealing with Irene, a tropical storm by the time it swept over Vermont.

"I think we put the efforts that we could and the resources that we could," Wrinn said.

Whole towns were isolated for days because of washed-out roads and bridges. Six people died, and damage was pegged at three-quarters of a billion dollars in a state with a total budget of about $5 billion. In Brattleboro, it was months before many downtown businesses reopened.

The house where Marble lived stayed on dry ground, but its direct route to town was cut for three days by the Whetstone Brook and another stream, which turned hay fields into raging torrents and inundated a mobile home park.

Kittredge, his mother, his girlfriend and others held news conferences asking for his return or for information, pleas that were later posted on YouTube. There's a website and a Facebook page. Fliers are posted throughout the region. A $2,500 reward is still untouched.

And police still haven't learned who knocked on the door.

"My sense is that whatever he went to do turned into something else, and he wasn't prepared for it," said his mother, who just moved to Lyons, Colo., with Marble's 15-year-old brother Soren to, as she put it, "give us a chance to heal."

Marble didn't take anything with him when he left. His bank account remains untouched. There are no electronic tendrils that could be used to track him. Extensive ground searches by people and dogs have turned up nothing.

"He admitted he smoked marijuana; is it possible that he went outside slipped and fell, hit his head and knocked himself unconscious and got washed away by the storm? Yeah, it's possible," Kittredge said. "Is it possible that he went outside to go for a walk and somebody stopped to pick him up and he thought it was a good idea and whoever it was, was a crazy person who abducted him? It's just odd that there is no trace."

Did he commit suicide, his remains washed away? Maybe, Kittredge said, but no one saw any warning signs.

There are darker, barely whispered rumors that Marble was feuding with people around town or that perhaps his marijuana use played a role in his disappearance. Wrinn, the police chief, said investigators have heard the talk.

The detective who first led the search for Marble has left the department. Wrinn said he has assigned two detectives to start from scratch. He's still hopeful Marble will be found alive.

Nichols, the friend, said he met Marble in school and they became friends.

"He was a real smart kid, always got good grades," he said. Belying his largely black wardrobe, he'd eagerly talk to almost anyone but never get too personal.

Nichols last saw Marble a couple of days before he disappeared. Like everyone else, he has heard rumors but doesn't know what happened to him.

"I don't think he wanted anyone to think that he was dead or injured," Nichols said. "He had people who cared about him, and he cared about people, too."

Marble's aunt and mother hope focusing attention on the case will prompt someone to come forward with information.

"His 18th birthday would have been June 14," Kittredge said. "There was this little part of me that went, if he had the ability and the audacity to go hide out until he turned 18, I would have hoped he would have turned up by now.

"I believe he is out there somewhere for sure. I don't necessarily have a strong feeling he is out there alive. I think it is possible, but I think it is remote."

Donations up at Livestrong cancer awareness network as Armstrong ...

By Agence France-Presse
Sunday, August 26, 2012 1:55 EDT

?

Lance Armstrong faces the loss of his seven Tour de France titles and a lifetime ban from cycling, but backers of his advocacy work for cancer patients showed undimmed admiration Friday.

?Thanks to all the amazing @livestrong supporters worldwide,? Armstrong said on Twitter, speaking of the Livestrong cancer awareness network his charitable foundation supports. ?Donations today were UP 25x over yesterdays. Thank you thank you thank you!?

Lance Armstrong Foundation chief executive Doug Ulman told ESPN that $3,200 came in Thursday to the organization?s website, a fairly typical day.

As of 4:30 pm (2030 GMT) on Friday, Ulman said $78,000 of unsolicited donations had been received, with 411 people donating compared to 45 on Thursday.

?Our mission is strong as a result of so many generous people,? Ulman said in a Twitter posting.

The US anti-doping agency said it was banning Armstrong for life and stripping him of the record seven Tour de France titles that helped him become a US sports hero and gave him a platform to speak out about cancer.

USADA branded Armstrong a dope cheat a day after the 40-year-old Texan said he wouldn?t accept independent arbitration in a bid to clear himself of charges that he used performance-enhancing drugs to win cycling?s most prestigious race from 1999 to 2005.

The agency laid out five rule violations for which Armstrong has been sanctioned, saying the cancer survivor who became a hero to millions took part in a systematic doping conspiracy, and said his results over a 14-year period starting on August 1, 1998 would be expunged.

Initial reaction from sponsors of Armstrong and his foundation was supportive, with sporting goods manufacturer Nike among several sponsors saying they would stick by him.

The home of Major League Soccer?s Sporting Kansas City will continue to be called Livestrong Sporting Park.

Sporting KC chief executive Robb Heineman said the club won?t consider renaming the $200 million sporting grounds that opened last year.

?The naming rights partnership between our stadium and Livestrong provides an opportunity to spread health and wellness messages that emphasizes the spirit of cancer survivorship,? he said.

?Livestrong?s focus is the fight against cancer and the support of 28 million people around the world affected by this disease, and we believe strongly in this mission.?

The support of donors appeared to bear out the theory that many of those who admire Armstrong for his Livestrong message don?t care if the doping allegations that have long surrounded him are true.

But for those who drew their inspiration from Armstrong?s sporting achievements in the wake of his own cancer fight, the issue may be murkier.

?Lance was a huge inspiration of mine,? tweeted Australian Olympic swimmer Stephanie Rice. ?I don?t know what to think now.?

Best Internet Marketing Tips To Improve Your Business | Home ...

It?s well known that Internet marketing is hard work. It is also known that Internet marketing must be done right to be effective. You definitely don?t want to overwork while approaching things the wrong way. Ensure you are going the right way by reading this article.

Do you have a company slogan or a statement of purpose? If so, list it in a prominent place on your website. This helps to make the web site more professional and communicate your intentions to your visitors. This will help you highlight your services and the reasons for your commitment to your products and customers.

TIP! Be original if your goal is to see Internet success in marketing. Search engines are very good at identifying duplicate content, so copying will just hurt you in the long run.

Web design is a crucial skill to learn so invest plenty of time in learning so you can be in complete control of your website. There?s plenty of information online about CSS or HTML that will help you in web design. Even if you can only spend a little bit of time on it each day you should.

Be sure that you keep very detailed statistics. This could be sales, refunds, referrals, conversion, or anything else you can measure. Keeping accurate records will ensure that you take proper action whenever the need arises.

One of the top internet marketing ideas is to give clients additional money off if they spend more than a specified amount of money. A good thing to do is to offer customers a 10% discount on anything they spend over a certain amount. This is a good way to get your customers to buy more of your products.

TIP! Your website should include customer feedback on your products and services. People enjoy reading the experiences other customers have had with the products, and they want to see what other people have said.

Gain customers by holding a contest or a great sale that will interest customers. This builds a buzz for your promotion and encourages traffic, but it also builds exposure to your product. Of course, happy customers may just add additional items to their shopping cart before checking out. Stay confident and believe in your product!

Open a Facebook account or one on a similar site, so you may send links and information to people in your target market. Try to keep your content controlled so that you are not accused of harassment.

If you can create an Ezine, it can be a great tool to get subscribers and market your company. One way to start building relations is by adding personality to your Ezine with the use of pictures of your staff. Write facts about your personal life that people can relate to. When you use a title that sparks their interest, they will be more likely to click!

Html Tags

Discover the proper use of HTML tags. HTML tags will highlight important content on specific pages of your site. A search engine crawler will rate your site based on which tags you use and emphasize. Be certain to highlight the keywords that matter the most.

Try to regard Internet marketing as being a hobby rather than a job, particularly when you are just getting started. If you?re good at it, then you can think of it as a career, but initially, it should be for fun.

TIP! Increase site traffic with original content. Although it may seem easier to simply post the information offered by the manufacturer, this will not help your SEO efforts.

Consider adding a section where customers can post comments about products they have bought from you. People like to research what other consumers are saying about a product they are thinking of purchasing. This can help them feel a bit more comfortable with purchasing from you.

One way to market your business online would be to create a website that covers all public relations issues. You could add content with information that could be published in online magazines and newspapers. This is an easy and effective way to show your business to the public.

Always have a budge and do not overspend on advertising. You don?t want to waste money on something that is of no benefit to your business. Make sure that your money is being spent towards something that will benefit you.

TIP! When you are using signatures, link them to your site or email. If you participate in forums, place a link to your site in the signature of your posts.

If you are using email marketing, you need to rotate links that are included in your correspondence. By keeping the links in the same spots, your customers will start to ignore them. You can keep the interest of your customers by using a variety of email links.

Internet Marketing

Make certain your customers are aware that you have an ordering system on your website that is totally secure. People are hesitant to send out personal information via the internet so do your best to assure them that your site is secure.

TIP! Provide easily understood and content-driven content on your site. Your primary concern should be to provide your visitors with detailed and instructive content about the product or service they want to purchase.

Strive to create a cycle of Internet marketing that increases other opportunities for Internet marketing. You want to make a cycle for yourself that can help you in the long run, you want a cycle that goes something like where people search, then fir your business, then buy your products that results in the cycle repeating.

To assist your business in growing a base of customers with Internet marketing, make sure you stay active on social media sites. Creating a Facebook page and a Twitter can get you more clients. You could also use Twitter to interact with people and find out what your customers think of your products.

You normally do not want to mix pleasure and business, but in this instance, you may want to. That is because there is no high pressure, and it can almost be viewed as a type of lucrative hobby. Think about doing it with a spouse.

TIP! When you send your customers an email, be sure it includes a rousing call to action. People should be compelled by your email to take action, be it purchasing your new service or product or reading your new blog.

Try to use banners on your website that are not obvious in looking like a banner. Rather, try and have them look like links that can be clicked on to get access to more content. Most of the time people don?t click on banners, so be creative and entice them to.

Give some things away for free to promote your business and the products on your site. It can be well worth the cost of these extras when you consider the return business that these small tokens of your respect will inspire.

The foundation of a consistently effective strategy for Internet marketing is to have relevant and useful content. Constantly analyze your content to make sure it is of the highest quality and exactly what visitors are looking for. Also, have others review your content. You may find it very useful to have others? outlook. Lastly, be sure to check your spelling and grammar for any errors.

TIP! Reward customers who bring your referrals. Transform a single sale into many by offering rewards to customers for bringing family and friends to your website.

One way to improve the success of your internet marketing efforts is with a blog that you update on a regular basis. By writing a blog, you have access to another way in which to keep contact with your customers. Blogs will also increase your content. This will raise your visibility with search engines and increase visitor traffic.

If a business sells products online, no matter the volume, any third-party transactions should be secure. There are quite a few good services that are both impartial and trustworthy. Some examples include: Verisign, McAfee, etc. protect both the vender and the customer. Although security systems do cost money, they are a necessity.

One way to drastically increase the number of visitors coming to your site is to create a viral video. Creating a video that is successful to the magnitude that viral videos are can take quite a bit of creativity. This extra traffic will make your business really take off.

TIP! Get associated with a worthwhile charity. Select a charity your customers will be interested in and give plenty of information about this charity on your site.

Make a game on your site. A fun, free game can get customers to visit your site over and over again. You can use your game to subtly market your products or services. If you sell a product that relates to hair conditioning, feature this product within the game.

Use words such as ?limited?, ?unique? or ?one of a kind? in your ads to relay the message to your customers that this is a special product that may not be available for purchase very long. Online shopping is done a lot of the time because people are sick of what their stores have. They are looking for something that is different and unique. If you sell a limited edition of something, they will want to buy it to be different, and understand they have to buy it quickly before it runs out.

Make sure your purchasing software uses strong encryption. Services such as Paypal allow you to use a payment system on your site that offers safe monetary transactions. Make sure that all of your customer?s personal and payment information is sent to your server in a secure, encrypted form.

TIP! Get more traffic to your site by giving out something for free. A great free downloadable item to offer is an article related to your product or services.

Using the most effective strategies to head your business toward success is easy with the powerful strategies in the above article. Armed with the information you learned here, and with a bit of hard work, soon you will see the results of your internet marketing efforts
