A unique theory about how life arose on earth may reveal clues to whether and where else it might have arisen in the universe

Does life exist elsewhere or is our planet unique, making us truly alone in the universe? Much of the work carried out by NASA, together with other research institutions, is aimed at trying to come to grips with this question.

A novel and potentially testable theory of how life arose on earth, first advanced more than 25 years ago by Michael Russell, a research scientist in Planetary Chemistry and Astrobiology at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, was further developed in a recent paper published in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B (PTRSL-B)the world's first science journalby Russell, Wolfgang Nitschke, a team leader at the National Center for Scientific Research in Marseille, France; and Elbert Branscomb, an affiliate faculty member at the Institute for Genomic Biology (IGB) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

This just-released paper, together with a companion paper by Russell and Nitschke in the same journal issue significantly advance the hypothesis and bring it substantially closer to experimental testingan effort already underway by Russell and his collaborators who are developing experimental model systems that can recreate, and test, the essential principals of the theory.

Notably, the Russell theory provides potential explanations for several puzzling aspects of how life works, including, for example, how it taps into and exploits sources of energy.

This strange energy conversion process works by using externally supplied energy to constantly pump a lot more protons onto one side of a biological membrane than the other and then having them flow back "downhill" immediately, but only through a turbine-like molecular engine which creates a chemical fuel called ATP; a fuel that cells "burn" in order to power vital cell processes. This process would be an exact parallel to the hydroelectric generation of electrical energy if some other source of energy was first required to pump water up hill behind a dam to then flow down to drive turbines. The question is why is this strange and seemingly inefficient process used?

Russell's theory suggests an answer: when life began it wasn't necessary to pump protons, the proton gradient was already there for the taking. Russell's theory sees life coming into being as a natural physical consequence of a geochemical process called serpentinization that produced, for free, the system's major components: cell-like compartments surrounded by membranes, the right proton concentration differences between the inside and outside of these mineral membranes, and primitive, "mineral-based" forms of the "turbine" motors needed to make a molecule like ATP.

The process of serpentinization occurs when water gravitates down cracks in hot, newly formed ocean crust, where it reacts chemically with the minerals in the rocks in a reaction that produces an extremely alkaline (pH ~13) effluent, rich in hydrogen and methane and the metal molybdenum, so important as a catalyst in life. This effluent is then driven back to the surface where, in the ocean of early earth, it contacted cooler, acidic (~ pH 5.5), and CO2-rich water to create precipitates that form chimney-like submarine towers. These precipitates are highly structured with a myriad of cell-like compartments surrounded by mineral membranesakin to our own. And across these membranes, separating acidic ocean and alkaline effluent, stood essentially the same proton gradientin strength and directionthat the cells of all living things on earth are constantly recreating and then immediately using today.

"So, if the Russell theory is correct, it is suddenly obvious why we pump protons and use this silly method," Branscomb said. "We got stuck on this 'free lunch' energy system when life was born, developed a lot of fancy machinery to use it, and have never severed that umbilicus since."

Branscomb, a member of the IGB's Biocomplexity research theme led by Swanlund Professor of Physics Nigel Goldenfeld, was funded in part by a recently awarded, five-year grant totaling $8 million from the NASA Astrobiology Institute. The grant funds the University of Illinois's Institute for Universal Biology, a member of the NASA Astrobiology Institute, which includes many members of the Biocomplexity theme who are studying the origin and evolution of life. Find out more about Illinois's Institute for Universal Biology and the IGB's Biocomplexity theme.

"We have a sample of only one planet known to harbor life," Goldenfeld said. "Thus it is critical that we be creative in extracting the most information from Earthly life as possible, if we are to ever understand the existence, likelihood, and nature of life elsewhere in the Universe. Russell, Nischke, and Branscomb's work lays an intriguing foundation for that endeavor, by cleverly bringing together concepts from thermodynamics, geochemistry and biology to advance a major new hypothesis for life's origins."

San Diego mayor wants city to pay legal fees in sex harassment suit ...

Fred Greaves / REUTERS

San Diego mayor Bob Filner speaks at a news conference in San Diego, California July 26, 2013.

By Sarah Grieco, NBCSanDiego.com

San Diego Mayor Bob Filner has asked the city to cover his legal fees for a sexual harassment lawsuit, according to an agenda released by the city council.

The city council will convene in a special closed session on Tuesday night to discuss whether or not to pay for legal fees in a sexual harassment claim filed by Filner?s former employee Irene McCormack Jackson.

More on NBCSanDiego.com

Jackson publicly came forward last week and alleged that Filner told her to ?work without panties? and detailed other alleged acts of sexual harassment. Jackson called her experience working for the mayor ?the worst time of my entire working life.?

Prominent San Diego attorney Gloria Allred is representing Jackson, and filed the lawsuit last week. Read the complaint here

Filner has been accused of sexually harassing multiple women -- a total of seven women have publicly come forward claiming he acted inappropriately toward them.

The mayor has since apologized for "offending" women, and will enter intensive therapy for two weeks to "begin the process of addressing [his] behavior."

Filner has made the request that he should be defended under the city?s expense through a letter from his lawyer Harvey Berger.

The letter stated that Filner should have the city pay for representation under California Government codes 825 and 995 ? which deal with compensation and defense of public employees.

The San Diego City Attorney?s Office is advising the council during Tuesday night?s meeting.

City Attorney Jan Goldsmith has said his office will not represent Filner, but he has not said whether or not the city will be responsible for his legal fees. It is not clear at this time how the council will act.

Messaging and VoIP app Viber gets playful with its ... - The Next Web

Mobile messaging and VoIP service provider Viber has introduced a new ?doodle? feature to its Android app, letting users graffiti over photos or create drawings from scratch.

Today?s update comes almost three months after Viber boosted its Skype-rivaling credentials by rolling out video-calling apps for Windows and Mac. To coincide with that launch,Viber also included a major update (3.0) to both its Android and iOS apps, with the former featuring a completely redesigned ?Holo? interface, among other Android-specific optimizations.

one on one updated andriod 220x391 Messaging and VoIP app Viber gets playful with its new doodle feature for AndroidNow, with version 3.1 for Android, Viber?s getting playful by letting users create more personalized messages, while planting false mustaches on photos of their friends.

?Viber is a feature-rich platform that gives our users multiple ways to communicate freely,? explains Talmon Marco, CEO of Viber.

?We are constantly working to expand and enhance that functionality to give users complete freedom over the way they communicate,? he continues. ?We think the new doodle feature will not only prove to be incredibly fun for Viber users, but will also make Viber that much more useful as a communications tool.?

The new version for Android also lets users see when a message have been viewed by the recipient, as well as a number of other performance-related updates.

With 200 million users, Viber has emerged as a major contender in the mobile VoIP communications space ? and with its recently introduced desktop versions too, this will only strengthen its foothold. As for doodles, well, this feature will no doubt prove popular among some users.

If drawing-themed messaging apps are your thing, you?ll maybe want to check out Cubie too, an Android and iOS app that takes message-doodling to the next level.

Meanwhile, Viber 3.1 for Android is available to download now from Google Play, and the iOS incarnation will receive the same love in the coming weeks.

Bombs kill 15 in Nigeria's Kano: Police

KANO, Nigeria (Reuters) - Multiple bomb blasts in Nigeria's biggest northern city of Kano killed 15 people on Monday, a senior policeman said, in an area previously targeted by militant Islamist group Boko Haram.

Several witnesses said they saw dead bodies after hearing multiple blasts at around 9:30 p.m. (2030 GMT) in the Sabon Gari district, a predominantly Christian area dominated by ethnic Igbos from the southeast.

"In all bomb attacks 15 were killed," the policeman in Kano told Reuters, asking not to be named.

Military spokesman Ikedichi Iweha confirmed there had been a bomb explosion but gave no further details.

"I heard two explode around Enugu Road and another two near Forest Villa Hotel," said local trader Emeka Mike. "After the blasts I saw many bodies lying on the ground."

The military did not say who was suspected of carrying out the bombings, but Boko Haram killed at least 25 people in multiple bomb blasts in Sabon Gari in March.

A concerted military crackdown in Boko Haram's northeast stronghold since mid-May has weakened a 4-year-old insurgency, which is fighting to carve an Islamic state out of religiously mixed Nigeria.

But it has also pushed the militants into hiding and security sources had feared attacks could spread to other areas of northern Nigeria like Kano or to neighbouring countries.

Militants have also shifted their focus away from security forces onto civilian targets, killing children in at least four school attacks over the past month and killing 20 civilians in an attack on a remote northeast village last weekend. 9 dogs dead in 2 separate cases of animal abuse

Nine dogs are dead in two separate cases of animal abuse in the Tampa Bay area.

A St. Petersburg man was arrested Friday after police found two dogs and six puppies in a makeshift kennel.

Police tell the Tampa Bay Times (http://bit.ly/13NOaeJ ) that the animals were emaciated and suffered from parasites. One puppy died en route to Pinellas County Animal Services and all but one of the remaining dogs had to be euthanized.

In New Port Richey, Pasco County Sheriff's deputies found two dead dogs and one dog suffering from the effects of having been abandoned in a home for weeks without food or water. Deputies tell the Tampa Bay Times (http://bit.ly/1cbQXlN ) that a woman arrested Thursday said she "got freaked out" and left when one of the dogs died.

Harvest of Rocky Ford cantaloupes gets under way

ROCKY FORD, Colo.?Farmers are starting their harvest of Rocky Ford cantaloupes.

The Rocky Ford Growers Association says that when pickers headed to the fields Friday, they were getting a late start on the harvest. The association says growers thought they could start harvesting a week ago, but the fruit hadn't quite ripened due in part to the drought.

Rocky Ford growers were hurt by a listeria outbreak in 2011, even though the outbreak was traced to cantaloupes grown 90 miles away. The region's farmers collectively planted a small crop the following year.

The growers association says the 550 acres of Rocky Ford cantaloupes that farmers planted this year is more than double the acreage planted last year, but it's still not at capacity due to a continuing drought.

A Tribute to Rudolf Nureyev at London Coliseum

ENB marked the 20th anniversary of Nureyev?s death and the 75th anniversary of his birth with a special tribute programme

In his incredibly busy and peripatetic life, Rudolf Nureyev formed lasting relationships with several big ballet companies. One of them was London Festival Ballet, as English National Ballet was known in the 1970s. As his ties to the Royal Ballet decreased, Nureyev increasingly turned to Britain?s second biggest ballet company for the opportunity not only to perform in London and on international tours, but to stage his own productions. So it?s not surprising that ENB chose to mark the 20th anniversary of his death and the 75th anniversary of his birth with a special tribute programme.

China Aims to Help Small Businesses

BEIJING?China has rolled out temporary tax cuts and promises of fresh credit for small businesses that have been hit hard as economic growth slows, but the move will have only a limited impact on the economy, analysts said.

The measures are aimed at giving small firms a helping hand and in turn boosting economic growth as the economy appears to lose steam.

On Friday, the central bank said it would encourage banks to lend more to smaller firms and it would encourage these companies to tap the bond market for financing. That followed an announcement by the State Council, or China's cabinet, on Wednesday that it would temporarily suspend business and value-added taxes for companies with monthly revenue under 20,000 yuan ($3,260) starting Aug. 1.

Small and medium-size enterprises account for 80% of China's urban jobs, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. But they often find themselves hard-pressed to get financing, with banks preferring to make loans to larger companies.

Still, economists said the move wouldn't significantly open up new channels of credit. "The reality is the banking system is not set up to serve SMEs," said Liu Li-Gang, at economist at Australia & New Zealand Banking Group, referring to small and medium-size enterprises. "This will probably not be that effective."

The central bank said on its website that it would use monetary tools to support smaller firms. It didn't give specifics on its plans and ultimately the banks will decide for themselves where to lend. But the central bank delivered the same message in a commentary by People's Bank of China Gov. Zhou Xiaochuan in the Communist Party mouthpiece People's Daily on Friday, adding weight to the move.

In an apparently related development, China Citic Bank, the country's seventh-biggest lender by assets, said Thursday it had received regulatory backing to issue 30 billion yuan of bonds to support small businesses.

Earlier in the week the State Council said that its tax cuts would benefit six million firms and tens of millions of workers. That suggests that the government's target is very small businesses indeed, as the average operation affected by the move would have only a handful of employees.

An executive with a small media company in north China's Gansu province said the revenue threshold is extremely low and likely to limit the impact of the tax measures.

"It's really symbolic," said the executive. "I believe there is no manufacturing company in China that will benefit from the policy."

Other business executives generally agreed the effects would be limited.

"These measures are aimed at very small businesses, or businesses that have just been set up," said Florence Mo, a manager at Lamkin Golf Products, a manufacturer in the southern city of Guangzhou. With about 500 workers, Lamkin is too large to benefit from the tax cut.

The tax cut will add up to some 36 billion yuan per year, or 0.3% of fiscal revenue, HSBC estimates. But the bank's economists argue the revenue is worth sacrificing because the tax cut will produce political benefits, helping to "maintain social stability and uphold consumer spending."

The measure could boost employment and shore up confidence, said Lu Ting, chief China economist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

China's policy makers are debating how best to prop up an economy that grew by 7.8% in 2012, its slowest pace in more than a decade, and looks set to decelerate further this year.

A program to replace the business tax with a lighter value-added tax is also intended to benefit businesses. The change has lowered the tax burden on more than 95% of taxpayers in the regions that have made the switch so far, according to the State Administration of Taxation. The agency estimates the change lowered the overall tax burden in those areas by some 23 billion yuan in the first five months of the year.

The State Council on Wednesday also unveiled a batch of measures to support exporters, including simplifying customs procedures and suspending some fees. The government hinted too that it will resist further appreciation of China's currency, saying it wants to maintain a "basically stable" exchange rate.

Tax breaks, targeted lending support and supply-side measures like cutting red tape offer the government a way to give the economy a helping hand without resorting to the all-out stimulus it used to get through the financial crisis, and again, on a smaller scale, to weather a slowdown in 2012.

"The planned changes will definitely contribute to speed and will reduce cost" when clearing shipments at customs, said Jasper Schouten, a manager at International Flavors & Fragrances, a U.S. maker of ingredients for food and other products with operations in China. But he added that the fee cuts would not be a game-changer unless made permanent. "Temporary changes are nice but will have limited impact," he said.

This Biosensor Knows When Your Body Will Quit Before You Do

Extreme athletes often hit a point during competition wherein their bodies simply can't produce the requisite amount of energy to sustain their current output, commonly known as "hitting the wall." While much research has been done towards countering this event (looking at you Gatorade) actively estimating when the wall will hit remains a cumbersome exercise. But this new biosensor has a non-invasive way of knowing exactly when you'll run out of steam.

Train's Pat Monahan makes bid to join TODAY

Performances

If Grammy-winning band Train ever decides to pull into its final station, singer Pat Monahan says he's got plans for a second career.

"My goal is that one day, you'll say 'why don't you just stay,' and I'll join you guys every morning," he told TODAY's Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie when the band came to play on the plaza Friday. "I've got my own podcast. I'm just trying to get into your world."

The band played under a gloomy sky to cheering fans, blasting through four songs: "Soul Sister," "Bruises" (which featured a duet with country star Ashley Monroe), "Drive By" and "50 Ways to Say Goodbye."

They are currently on their "Mermaids of Alcatraz" tour, and Monahan noted it has taken them to all kinds of concerts: "Tomorrow we're in Connecticut to do a barbecue, and then we do a show in Boston," he chuckled. "It's really fun."

Perhaps he's preparing for a "where in the world is Pat Monahan" segment when he joins the TODAY anchors next time.

Take a look at our some of our favorite tweets and Instagrams from the Train concert, below.

Detroit Lions implement new NFL bag policy at Ford Field

DETROIT ? The Detroit Lions announced Wednesday that they have implemented the NFL?s new bag policy for their games and large events at Ford Field ? including the Jay Z and Justin Timberlake: Legends of the Summer Tour on August 6 and the Detroit Lions preseason opener vs. The New York Jets August 9.

The policy will also be enforced for Detroit Lions Training Camp at the team?s headquarters and practice facility in Allen Park, MI.

To provide a safer environment for the public and significantly expedite fan entry into stadiums the NFL established a league policy that limits the size and type of bags that may be brought into the stadium.

Fans are encouraged not to bring any type of bags, but will be able to carry the following style and size bag, package, or container at stadium plaza areas, stadium gates, or when approaching queue lines of fans awaiting entry into the stadium:

  • Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12" x 6" x 12." (Official NFL team logo clear plastic tote bags are available through club merchandise outlets or at nflshop.com), or
  • One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar).
  • Small clutch bags, approximately the size of a hand, with or without a handle or strap, may be carried into the stadium along with one of the clear bag options.
  • An exception will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection at a gate designated for this purpose.

Prohibited items include, but are not limited to: purses larger than a clutch bag, diaper bags, coolers, briefcases, backpacks, fanny packs, cinch bags, luggage of any kind, seat cushions, computer bags and camera bags or any bag larger than the permissible size.

The NFL Committee on Stadium Security in May unanimously recommended the implementation of this measure to enhance public safety and make it easier for fans to gain access in all stadiums. It was discussed with all clubs at the May league meeting and will be implemented at all NFL stadiums beginning with preseason games.

This public safety measure is being successfully used at both The University of Michigan and Michigan State University who do not permit any bags.

Working personnel, including media, will continue to enter NFL stadiums through designated gates where they will be subject to screening and bag inspections already in effect at all stadiums.

President Obama will speak about the economy on a tour beginning Wednesday. The events could help him refocus national attention on issues that drove the last election.

It seems early in President Obama?s second term to commence legacy shaping, yet his schedule this week ? packed with a series of campaign-style speeches heralding a strengthening economy and outlining new (or slightly used) fiscal proposals ? represents a preliminary effort at just that.

The pivot is designed to allow him to claim credit for a modestly improving job market, while reiterating his administration?s focus on fighting for America?s middle class. The move also gives him an opportunity to turn away from the Washington-focused brawls (immigration and failed gun control legislation) and charged national debates (the George Zimmerman trial and race relations) that have dogged and distracted him so far this summer. Not to mention the international quagmires ? from Benghazi to Edward Snowden ? that have put the administration on defense for months.

?We have come a long way since the depths of the Great Recession,? Jay Carney, the White House press secretary, said Monday.

The president?s topical shift is a sales job that comes with risks because the economy has hardly roared back to full function. But it is a reminder that the last two presidential contests turned on which candidate would better steer the nation through tough economic times.

While Mr. Obama is expected to say he sees a strengthening economic climate, Republicans are likely to remind Americans that the ?economy is treading water,? as a spokesman for Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell told The New York Times.

The Republicans aren?t necessarily wrong, writes Jim Tankersley of The Washington Post's Wonkblog. ?The president has watched some of his biggest economic initiatives falter since winning reelection,? he says.?

Mr. Tankersley cites a decrease in factory employment, despite Obama?s emphasis on increasing manufacturing jobs by one million by 2016, and a fall in median earnings, among other markers. He also notes that with all the talk of new job creation, many of those jobs are part-time, not full-time. Not bad, but not ideal.

Obama will speak Wednesday at Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., (the site of his first big economic speech as a freshman US senator), and at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo., and in Jacksonville, Fla., later this week.

The president is expected to hold as many as a half dozen similar events in coming weeks in Washington and elsewhere to outline proposals on jobs, housing, health care, and retirement, according to USA Today. He is setting the stage for the fall budget battle and continued talks about the debt ceiling.

During an event Monday night in Washington, the president framed the upcoming conversation as an effort to return the administration?s root charge upon election.

"It's going to be the kickoff to what is essentially several months of us trying to get Washington and the press to refocus on the economy and the struggles that middle-class families are going through, but also for us to start exploring some big and bold ideas," he said.

Obama's economic vision would not appear to be an area of bipartisan common ground. While struggling with their own messaging and lacking national leadership, Republicans have sunk Obama?s efforts to mandate more sweeping background checks for gun control and have effectively scuttled immigration reform, for now at least. They also opposed other economic proposals Obama has rolled out, including a $447 billion jobs bill.

Indeed, Obama has floated economic plans previously and toured the nation preaching a similar gospel; in May his ?Middle Class Jobs and Opportunity Tour? stopped in Baltimore and Austin, Texas.

But the stakes are high for Obama and his party's 2016 prospects. A good economy is, generally speaking, a politician's most precious tool during an election cycle. If Obama succeeds in pushing his legislation and improving the economy ? or at least persuading the public that he and his party are effective change agents ? he?ll set up the Democrats with a nice platform from which to run in 2016. And who in the GOP wants that?

Most passengers rescued after asylum seekers boat sinks off Indonesia

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Three people died but another 157 suspected asylum seekers were rescued after their boat sank off the southern coast of Indonesia, officials said on Wednesday after earlier reports that as many as 60 may have perished.

The latest case of a boat sinking while attempting the perilous journey came five days after Australia slammed the door on would-be refugees with a deal to send all boat arrivals to Papua New Guinea for assessment and eventual settlement.

The debate over refugees and people smuggling has long been a hot political issue in Australia and has intensified with an election looming in a few weeks.

Earlier on Wednesday, News Ltd and other Australian media reported that the boat was carrying as many as 170 people and that up to 60 were feared dead or missing.

Indonesian emergency authorities however said later that 160 people were on board and that three had died, two women and a 12-year-old boy from Sri Lanka.

"(The survivors) have been taken to a temporary immigration holding facility ... They seem fine," Rochmali, the head of the search and rescue office for West Java, told Reuters.

There were also conflicting reports about the nationalities of those on board. They were described variously as coming from Iran, Iraq and Bangladesh, as well as Sri Lanka.

The boat capsized late on Tuesday after hitting a reef off the coast of Sukapura, about 270 km (170 miles) south of the capital Jakarta, said Rochmali, who like many Indonesians uses one name.

Since 2001, about 1,000 people have died while trying to reach Australia's Indian Ocean territory of Christmas Island in unseaworthy boats. More than 15,000 asylum seekers have arrived by boat in Australian territory this year.

On Friday, Canberra announced tough new measures to stem a sharp increase in the number of refugee boats heading for Australia from Indonesia.

The new plans have been condemned by human rights groups, with Amnesty International accusing it of shirking its moral obligations to help the world's most vulnerable people.

Shortly after Prime Minister Kevin Rudd visited Indonesia this month, Jakarta said it would stop giving Iranians visas on arrival, making it harder for them to use the Southeast Asian country as a route to seek refuge in Australia.

Australia last year reopened immigration detention centers on Manus Island in Papua New Guinea, and on the remote South Pacific island nation of Nauru, in order to deter boat arrivals.

A former guard at Manus Island told Australian television on Tuesday of the poor conditions on Manus and said detainees were sexually abused and tortured by other inmates with no intervention by staff.

Australian Immigration Minister Tony Burke said he would travel to Manus to inspect conditions, but said Australia remained committed to expanding the Manus detention center and to sending all boat arrivals to Papua New Guinea.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) earlier this month found major shortcomings with the Manus center, with cramped living quarters and asylum seekers reporting issues with the heat, privacy, hygiene and access to medical services.

Rodgers' Twitter bet over Braun attracts attention

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? One NFL fan is having a little fun with Green Bay Packers star Aaron Rodgers over his vociferous support of Milwaukee Brewers slugger Ryan Braun.

It all started when Todd Sutton tweeted last year that Rodgers was delusional over his insistence that Braun had not used performance-enhancing drugs. Rodgers then responded that he would bet a year's salary that his friend was clean, including the hashtags ponyup and exonerated.

Now that Braun has accepted a season-ending 65-game suspension rather than fight Major League Baseball over evidence he used PEDs, Sutton tells USA Today he would settle for a game check.

The 37-year-old flight nurse from Denver tells the newspaper he's not expecting to hear from Rodgers. He also says he still likes the quarterback.

Rodgers, who has more than 1 million Twitter followers, had not posted on his account since Thursday.

Ford adds Surveillance Mode to squad cars, alerts cops to unexpected humans

DEARBORN, Mich., July 19, 2013 ? A new technology available for Ford Police Interceptor will provide an additional measure of security for law enforcement officers by mitigating their risk of being snuck up on from the rear while working in their vehicles, especially at night.

The new surveillance mode technology works by using existing Ford driver-assist technologies ? a backup camera, cross-traffic alert and reverse park assist ? to give police officers added situational awareness and a first line of defense from potential assailants.

When an officer activates the system with the vehicle in park, the backup camera, combined with sensors that detect blind spots and parking obstacles, continually monitors the area to the rear of the vehicle. Surveillance mode can be turned off in situations such as curbside urban settings where pedestrians would constantly set the alarm off.

The patent-pending idea is the brainchild of Randy Freiburger, Ford police and ambulance fleet supervisor. Freiburger spent many hours riding along with police officers and saw firsthand the dangers officers face in the course of routine patrols and investigations.

"I can tell you from personal experience at night that officer security is a critical concern," says Freiburger. "Unfortunately, there are people with bad intentions who sneak up on police officers. This system builds upon the Ford Police Interceptor DNA that puts safety and security at the top of the list."

Officers have to write reports, monitor an in-car computer or radar gun, and perform other tasks while sitting in their vehicle. Surveillance mode gives them an extra set of eyes to help guard against threats ? especially at night when visibility is compromised.

Ford collaborated with Intermotive Inc. of Auburn, Calif., which developed and will sell the surveillance mode system along with several other innovative law enforcement products. The system can be installed at Crown, the facility near Ford's Chicago Assembly Plant where lights and other accessories are added, or at local upfitters by working directly with Intermotive.

Surveillance mode is available for the 2014 Ford Police Interceptor sedan and utility vehicle.

U.S. existing home sales drop in June, but prices climb nearly 14 ...

Sales of previously owned houses unexpectedly dropped in June, hurt by a lack of supply and rising mortgage rates that will slow the rebound in the U.S. real-estate market.

Purchases fell 1.2% to a 5.08 million annualized rate, the National Association of Realtors reported today in Washington. The median forecast of 79 economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for a 5.26 million pace. The pace of the demand was the second strongest since November 2009 following May?s downwardly revised 5.14 million rate.

The number of houses for sale at the end of last month were the fewest for any June since 2001 as rising prices depleted the number of cheaper houses on the market. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke last week said housing was one of the bright spots for growth and added that policy makers will monitor the recent jump in interest rates to ensure it won?t derail the nascent recovery.

?What?s holding sales down is just that there?re just not a lot of homes for sale,? Patrick Newport, an economist at IHS Global Insight in Lexington, Massachusetts, said before the report. ?We?re not expecting really strong numbers for the rest of the year even though the housing market is getting hot. What you?re seeing is this pent-up demand show up in higher prices, not in higher sales.? He projected a June sales rate of 5.12 million.

Estimates in the Bloomberg survey of economists ranged from 4.99 million to 5.5 million. The prior month?s pace was revised from a previously reported 5.18 million.

The median price of an existing home climbed 13.5% to $214,200 last month from $188,800 a year earlier, today?s report showed.

The number of properties on the market increased 1.9% to 2.19 million, the fewest for any June since 2001. At the current sales pace, it would take 5.2 months to sell those houses compared with 5 months at the end of May.

?Momentum still appears to be strong,? NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun said at a news conference as the figures were released. ?The inventory shortage is continuing to push prices higher.?

The shortage was particularly acute at lower price points as price increase push homes out of reach of first-time buyers, he said.

ABC's O'Brian named Al Jazeera America president

Al-Jazeera America said Monday it will bring in a quartet of veteran U.S. television news executives, led by ABC's Kate O'Brian as president, to run the new cable news network and pinpointed Aug. 20 as the launch date.

Ehab Al Shahibi, executive director for international operations for Al-Jazeera and the man who has overseen development of the American outlet, is the interim chief executive officer.

Qatar-based Al-Jazeera, formed in 1996, has expanded quickly around the world but struggled to gain access to U.S. cable and satellite systems. At the beginning of this year, it bought former Vice President Al Gore's Current TV, giving the company access to some 50 million homes initially, and began to set up a network specifically for the U.S. audience.

O'Brian has worked at ABC News for three decades, and since 2007 has been the network's senior vice president for news, leading its breaking news coverage.

"She is a highly experienced and award-winning journalist who fully understands what Americans want to see and hear when they watch the news," said Mostefa Souag, acting director general of the Al-Jazeera Media Network. "Kate has the vision, tenacity and integrity to ensure that Al-Jazeera America will quickly become the success we expect it to be."

Three other Americans who have extensive experience in television news, but aren't working there currently, will join Al-Jazeera as senior vice presidents.

David Doss, a producer for news shows at ABC and NBC News who had most recently been producing broadcasts for Anderson Cooper at CNN, will be in charge of news programming.

Marcy McGinnis, currently teaching journalism at Stony Brook University, will be responsible for news gathering, similar to a job she held at CBS News a decade ago.

Shannon High-Bassalik has run local news operations, worked at MSNBC and most recently produced CNN's morning news show before it was remodeled. She will be in charge of documentaries and programs.

Al-Jazeera has announced that a handful of familiar names to American viewers ? Sheila MacVicar, Ali Velshi and Soledad O'Brien ? will be doing on-air work for the network. The network also has said it will air a regular newsmagazine, "America Tonight," on weeknights.

O'Brian started work at ABC more than 30 years ago as an intern at "20/20." ABC News President Ben Sherwood wrote to his staff on Monday that "I will miss the sound of her voice, urgent and measured, calling in the middle of the night, when news is breaking somewhere around the world."

Can I reserve a nightmare please?

I can feel it...creeping towards me...like the dark of the night...quietly catching me. It spreads without sound...pulling at me...tearing me apart...stranding me alone...it's so nogalistic yet dreadful ...that edgy voice...this cold air...those crystal blue eyes...every little thing...suffocating me...trapping me inside a labyrinth of memories...
