Archaic Native Americans built massive Louisiana mound in less than 90 days

Thursday, January 31, 2013

Nominated early this year for recognition on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which includes such famous cultural sites as the Taj Mahal, Machu Picchu and Stonehenge, the earthen works at Poverty Point, La., have been described as one of the world's greatest feats of construction by an archaic civilization of hunters and gatherers.

Now, new research in the current issue of the journal Geoarchaeology, offers compelling evidence that one of the massive earthen mounds at Poverty Point was constructed in less than 90 days, and perhaps as quickly as 30 days ? an incredible accomplishment for what was thought to be a loosely organized society consisting of small, widely scattered bands of foragers.

"What's extraordinary about these findings is that it provides some of the first evidence that early American hunter-gatherers were not as simplistic as we've tended to imagine," says study co-author T.R. Kidder, PhD, professor and chair of anthropology in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis.

"Our findings go against what has long been considered the academic consensus on hunter-gather societies ? that they lack the political organization necessary to bring together so many people to complete a labor-intensive project in such a short period."

Co-authored by Anthony Ortmann, PhD, assistant professor of geosciences at Murray State University in Kentucky, the study offers a detailed analysis of how the massive mound was constructed some 3,200 years ago along a Mississippi River bayou in northeastern Louisiana.

Based on more than a decade of excavations, core samplings and sophisticated sedimentary analysis, the study's key assertion is that Mound A at Poverty Point had to have been built in a very short period because an exhaustive examination reveals no signs of rainfall or erosion during its construction.

"We're talking about an area of northern Louisiana that now tends to receive a great deal of rainfall," Kidder says. "Even in a very dry year, it would seem very unlikely that this location could go more than 90 days without experiencing some significant level of rainfall. Yet, the soil in these mounds shows no sign of erosion taking place during the construction period. There is no evidence from the region of an epic drought at this time, either."

Part of a much larger complex of earthen works at Poverty Point, Mound A is believed to be the final and crowning addition to the sprawling 700-acre site, which includes five smaller mounds and a series of six concentric C-shaped embankments that rise in parallel formation surrounding a small flat plaza along the river. At the time of construction, Poverty Point was the largest earthworks in North America.

Built on the western edge of the complex, Mound A covers about 538,000 square feet [roughly 50,000 square meters] at its base and rises 72 feet above the river. Its construction required an estimated 238,500 cubic meters ? about eight million bushel baskets ? of soil to be brought in from various locations near the site. Kidder figures it would take a modern, 10-wheel dump truck about 31,217 loads to move that much dirt today.

"The Poverty Point mounds were built by people who had no access to domesticated draft animals, no wheelbarrows, no sophisticated tools for moving earth," Kidder explains. "It's likely that these mounds were built using a simple 'bucket brigade' system, with thousands of people passing soil along from one to another using some form of crude container, such as a woven basket, a hide sack or a wooden platter."

Kidder analyzes the varied colors and layers of the soils of Mound A, which are a result of the building process. Indians carried basket-loads of dirt weighing roughly 55 pounds and piled them up carefully to form the mound.

To complete such a task within 90 days, the study estimates it would require the full attention of some 3,000 laborers. Assuming that each worker may have been accompanied by at least two other family members, say a wife and a child, the community gathered for the build must have included as many as 9,000 people, the study suggests.

"Given that a band of 25-30 people is considered quite large for most hunter-gatherer communities, it's truly amazing that this ancient society could bring together a group of nearly 10,000 people, find some way to feed them and get this mound built in a matter of months," Kidder says.

Soil testing indicates that the mound is located on top of land that was once low-lying swamp or marsh land ? evidence of ancient tree roots and swamp life still exists in undisturbed soils at the base of the mound. Tests confirm that the site was first cleared for construction by burning and quickly covered with a layer of fine silt soil. A mix of other heavier soils then were brought in and dumped in small adjacent piles, gradually building the mound layer upon layer.

As Kidder notes, previous theories about the construction of most of the world's ancient earthen mounds have suggested that they were laid down slowly over a period of hundreds of years involving small contributions of material from many different people spanning generations of a society. While this may be the case for other earthen structures at Poverty Point, the evidence from Mound A offers a sharp departure from this accretional theory.

Kidder's home base in St. Louis is just across the Mississippi River from one of America's best known ancient earthen structures, the Monk Mound at Cahokia, Ill. He notes that the Monk Mound was built many centuries later than the mounds at Poverty Point by a civilization that was much more reliant on agriculture, a far cry from the hunter-gatherer group that built Poverty Point. Even so, Mound A at Poverty Point is much larger than almost any other mound found in North America; only Monk's Mound at Cahokia is larger.

"We've come to realize that the social fabric of these socieites must have been much stronger and more complex that we might previously have given them credit. These results contradict the popular notion that pre-agricultural people were socially, politically, and economically simple and unable to organize themselves into large groups that could build elaborate architecture or engage in so-called complex social behavior," Kidder says. "The prevailing model of hunter-gatherers living a life 'nasty, brutish and short' is contradicted and our work indicates these people were practicing a sophisticated ritual/religious life that involved building these monumental mounds."

Video: Iraq vet with double arm transplant looks to the future

>>> an inspiring miles stone to report tonight from johns hopkins hospital in baltimore where last month a u.s. army veteran who lost all four of his limbs underwent a remarkable transplant. today, the 26-year-old new yorker talked to reporters and said quite simply, "i feel like i'm getting a second chance." you will agree with that assessment when you see his story tonight from nbc's jim miklaszewski .

>> reporter: brandon morocco wheeled himself into a backed news conference in baltimore today. what's remarkable, he did it with a pair of arms he received just six weeks ago, in a double-transplant operation.

>> you know, i never really accepted the fact that i didn't have arms, so now that i have them again, it's -- it's almost like it never happened.

>> reporter: as an army private in iraq, morocco lost both his legs and arms to a roadside bomb. the military's first quadruple amputee to survive. but he never gave up hope. and amazingly, considered himself lucky.

>> i was still alive. so, that's really all that mattered to me at the time.

>> reporter: for nearly four years, morocco suffered through the excruciating pain of therapy at walter reed hospital .

>> pretty much anything that touches them, pushes on them, hurts real bad.

>> reporter: griffin, he mastered his artificial limbs , all four of them. but that would never be good enough.

>> i hated not having arms. i was all right with not having legs. not having arms takes so much away from you out of -- even your personality.

>> reporter: so last december, a team of doctors at johns hopkins hospital , working 13 hours straight, connected miles of nerves, vessels and blood tendons to transplant two arms from a deceased anonymous donor. they also traps planted the donor's bone marrow to reduce the threat of rejection. with an unbridled spirit, morocco's progress is nothing short of miraculous and the first time he moved his arms was a bit of a shock.

>> one of my friends was just, like, freaking out. like, did you do that on purpose?

>> reporter: now you scratching his nose is second nature. morocco's goal is to someday compete again in sports but most of all drive his car.

>> he is stubborn but in a good way, not going to let anybody tell him he can't do something.

>> reporter: morocco need clear, nothing going to stop him and so far, nothing has.

Equipping Your Leaders for Success | Mike Moroney | Denver CO ...

?

A recent HR Magazine article based on a CMI (Chartered Management Institute) survey of 700 leaders, revealed that a CEO?s #1 challenge?is to develop and engage human capital. ?However, when ranking strategies within this challenge, it was interesting to discover that mid-management leadership development was ranked at #10.? As CMI rightly pointed out, this is a significant concern:

? ? there is evidence that improving management and leadership can boost levels of business performance by as much as 23%, which could make the difference between survival and failure in tough markets. Failing to see management development as a key strategy to develop and engage employees could be making a costly mistake.??? To read the entire article, click here.

We couldn?t agree more.?While it is easy for organizations to assume that their leadership is already quite capable, there are a few factors affecting leadership in recent months and years that are potentially not being considered.

A good example is how economic conditions have required leaders to oversee more areas than in the past ? often times areas where they?ve had little, if any, experience.? In such circumstances, it may be important to provide a development program that specializes in those areas.? This is especially true during times when markets are changing.? Pricing, marketing techniques, efficient use of resources, technology utilization, and much more are evolving every day into new best-practices.? Being aware of this and keeping up within it is not only crucial to your business but also very important to the motivation, development, and productivity of your employees.

Most likely, the CEO?s of these companies are hesitant to invest into full development programs for their leadership due to the associated high costs. Often, a combination of formal training and continuing education through conferences, seminars, professional training, etc. can be very costly ? not just in terms of ?out of pocket? expenses but also (and possibly even more so) in terms of lost productivity. That is one of the reasons that MMC developed its Leadership Coaching Package. This is a highly effective tool that leaders can use ?on-the-job? to develop their abilities while also ?increasing? their productivity.

To use a football analogy, you have seen coaches and quarterbacks reviewing photos taken above the field during the game. These photos come from the ?press box coach? who is stationed high above the action to evaluate the opposing team?s strategy and identify weaknesses in his own. Feedback from a press box coach helps sideline coaches manage the overall game and address individual players? performance. Unlike football teams, however, many organizations lack similar systems to track their performance or don?t know how to interpret and act on the data they get from their reporting systems. ?MMC?s Leadership Coaching Package is designed to fill that gap. We watch the action, study metrics and trends, keep a pulse on operational successes and challenges, and provide weekly insight and advice to the leadership team for sustained and improved performance.

HSBC hires US expert on drug cartels after Mexico lapses

HSBC has recruited Jim Comey, a former US deputy attorney general, as a non-executive director. Comey will start work in March and will be a member of a new committee to combat financial crime. ? Reuters pic

LONDON, Jan 30 ? HSBC is hiring a former US deputy attorney general with a background in fighting drug cartels to help the global bank avoid a repeat of lapses in its anti-money-laundering controls that led to a US$1.9 billion (RM5.86 billion) fine.

The penalty, the largest ever paid by a bank, followed a long US investigation into HSBC?s Mexican and US operations that concluded last month with scathing criticism of the systems it used to stop the proceeds of organised crime passing through its accounts.

Jim Comey, who was US deputy attorney general from 2003 to 2005, will join Europe?s biggest bank as a non-executive director in March and will be a member of a new committee to combat financial crime.

As US attorney for the southern district of New York from 2002 to 2003, Comey set up a specialised unit to prosecute international drug cartels and supervised the prosecution of executives on fraud and securities-related charges.

He will be joined by two other non-executives ? Rona Fairhead and Simon Robertson ? and five independent advisers, including Bill Hughes, a former head of the UK?s Serious Organised Crime Agency, and Dave Hartnett, who retired last year as the permanent secretary for tax at Britain?s tax authority.

HSBC said today the Financial System Vulnerabilities Committee would help Chief Executive Stuart Gulliver simplify its business activities and enhance risk management and control by improving standards across the bank.

It will help HSBC meet tax transparency and compliance standards, the prevention of terrorist financing and association with illegal drugs activities.

HSBC said the committee would identify areas where the bank could be exposed to financial crime or system abuse, or where its bankers might ?abuse their participation in the system by undertaking transactions or activities that are reputationally damaging to HSBC, even if not actually illegal?.

Comey is the latest big American name hired by the bank to improve its controls and structure.

Stuart Levey, a former undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence in the US Treasury, joined last year as chief legal officer. Bob Werner, who had headed sanctions action against drugs traffickers and money launderers, became head of financial crime compliance, a new role. ? Reuters

Four Reasons Why the S&P 500 Is Topping Out

Monday, January 28th, 2013
By Michael Lombardi, MBA for Profit Confidential

The ?January Stock Market Indicator? is based on a loose theory that says if the stock market does well in January, it does well for the remainder of the year. While the first half of January was lackluster for the key stock indices, things really picked up in the second half of the month. But this time, the remainder of the year will be different for the key stock indices. Optimism is far too high, a negative factor for key stock indices.

According to a survey done by Bloomberg, international investors are the most bullish about stocks in at least three and a half years. A total of 53% of the respondents to the global poll believe that key stock indices around the world will provide the most return?this number is 17% higher than when the survey was done in November of 2012 and the biggest jump since the survey began in July of 2009. (Source: Bloomberg, January 2013.)

As optimism has continued to build up, the stock market rally persisted. I have been reading analysts and stock advisors who predict stocks will break above their record highs.

I can?t predict the exact top, or the exact point where the stock market rally will come to a stop, but, as I have been writing, I believe we are very close to the top.

Let?s look at the chart of S&P 500 below.

$SPX S&P 500 large cap index stock market chart

Chart courtesy of www.StockCharts.com

On the chart, you will notice that since the stock market rally began in 2009, the moves to the upside were fairly quick, until 2011, when the S&P 500 had a ?bad? year. Since then, the S&P 500 index has struggled on each subsequent high.

Each new advance for the S&P 500 has taken longer, which gives me cause to believe the rally is running out of steam. As an example, when the S&P 500 bottom was put in during March of 2009, the S&P 500 had a huge rally to 950 by June?a quick three-month bounce.

Fast forwarding to 2011 and, after the S&P 500 made its low for the year in October, it took until March of 2012 for the index to break above its 2011 highs?five months to get this rally going.

The trading patterns on the S&P 500 are also getting narrower and narrower. Look at the two lines drawn on the chart above; they are suggesting a formation of rising wedge pattern, which is considered a bearish chart pattern. And look at the volume at the bottom of the chart; it?s been continuously declining since 2009?another bearish factor.

It certainly does look like the S&P 500?s climb to the upside is slowing down. Finally, earnings of companies in key stock indices declined for the first time after 11 quarters in third quarter of 2012.

There you have it; four reasons why the S&P 500 stock market index is topping out.

What He Said:

?I?m getting very worried about the state of the U.S. housing market and its ramifications on the economy. The U.S. could be headed for its first outright annual decline in home prices on record, adjusted for inflation. And I really believe this could be a catastrophe for the U.S. economy.? Michael Lombardi in Profit Confidential, August 2, 2006. Michael started talking about and predicting the financial catastrophe we began experiencing in 2008 long before anyone else.

Cognitive Dissidence: Shrill's Family Tree

By Jeff Simpson

Shrill Labarre, was caught on video talking to her family tree.?? One would think that if Shrill had found an Ent, she could have at least found an intelligent one!?? I personally would have figured that Shril's family lineage would have been that of a bunch of rocks, but trees make sense also.??

H/T Blue Cheddar:

Unfortunately the three time assembly loser, and failed recall leader, would have picked up on the hint? of her perpetual rejection by her friends and neighbors that they have no interest in anything she has to say.? Unfortunately this time she comes very well funded, to the great dismay of the people and wildlife of Northern Wisconsin.?

By the way Shrill, it turns out Global Climate Change is worse than we even thought!?

Lord Stern, author of the government-commissioned review on climate change that became the reference work for politicians and green campaigners, now says he underestimated the risks, and should have been more ?blunt? about the threat posed to the economy by rising temperatures.

In an interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Stern, who is now a crossbench peer, said: ?Looking back, I underestimated the risks. The planet and the atmosphere seem to be absorbing less carbon than we expected, and emissions are rising pretty strongly. Some of the effects are coming through more quickly than we thought then.?

Looks like someone forgot to tell the tree! ?

EDIT NOTE:? Looks like we have uncovered the unedited version of Shrillee and the Tree!? Enjoy!

Amazon wants to make your hires videos mobile devicefriendly with Elastic Transcoder

Transcoding video is a pain. We know that about as well as anyone. Amazon feels that pain, and thankfully, it's got the servers to back it up. Ahead of today's earnings release, the retail giant is announcing the release of Elastic Transcoder, a service aimed at helping users convert their videos into different formats, with a number of presets available for mobile devices, web browsers and the like. Customers can also go ahead with their own presets, if they're so inclined, adjusting things like file size and bitrate. Elastic Transcoder makes it possible to process multiple videos and prioritizes files based on urgency. The pay-as-you-go service is currently available in a half-dozen areas, including the EU, US East and two in the US West and Asia Pacific. More info after the break.

Amazon Web Services Launches Amazon Elastic Transcoder

Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), an Amazon.com company (NASDAQ: AMZN), today announced Amazon Elastic Transcoder, a highly scalable service for transcoding video files between different digital media formats. For example, customers can use Amazon Elastic Transcoder to convert their large high resolution "master" video files into smaller versions that are optimized for playback on websites, mobile devices, connected TV's and other video platforms. Amazon Elastic Transcoder removes the need to manage infrastructure and transcoding software, providing scalability and performance by leveraging AWS services. The service manages all aspects of the transcoding process transparently and automatically. It also supports pre-defined transcoding presets that make it easy to transcode video for smartphones, tablets, web browsers and other devices. With Amazon Elastic Transcoder, customers can create enterprise, training, user-generated, broadcast, or other video content for their applications or websites. Customers can get started with Amazon Elastic Transcoder by visiting http://aws.amazon.com/elastictranscoder.

Traditionally, transcoding has been complex for customers in three significant ways. First, customers need to buy and manage transcoding software, which can be expensive and also requires substantial configuration and management. Second, audio and video settings for each device that the customer wants to support need to be created and tested. Often, this is a trial and error process, which can be wasteful as compute resources are used each time a new combination of settings is tried. Third, to accommodate peak workloads, customers need to provision the transcoding capacity appropriately. This can be expensive because most of the time the capacity is underutilized.

With Amazon Elastic Transcoder these complexities are eliminated. There is no need to buy, configure or manage the underlying transcoding software. In addition, Amazon Elastic Transcoder provides pre-defined presets for popular devices that remove the trial and error in finding the right settings and output formats for different devices. The service also supports custom presets (pre-defined settings made by the customer), making it easy for customers to create re-useable transcoding settings for their unique requirements such as a specific video size or bitrate. Finally, Amazon Elastic Transcoder automatically scales up and down to handle customers' workloads, eliminating wasted capacity and minimizing time spent waiting for jobs to complete. The service also enables customers to process multiple files in parallel and organize their transcoding workflow using a feature called transcoding pipelines. Using transcoding pipelines, customers can configure Amazon Elastic Transcoder to transcode their files when and how they want, so they can efficiently and seamlessly scale for spikey workloads. For example, a news organization may want to have a "high priority" transcoding pipeline for breaking news stories, or a User-Generated Content website may want to have separate pipelines for low, medium, and high resolution outputs to target different devices.

"Our customers told us that it was difficult and expensive to transcode video due to the explosion in the number of devices they need to support," said Charlie Bell, Vice President of Utility Computing Services. "They had to be both experts in the intricacies of video support on different devices and manage the software required to run the transcoding jobs. None of this work had anything to do with their goal: getting a high quality video that would look great on the devices they wanted. We built Amazon Elastic Transcoder to give our customers an easy, cost effective way to solve these problems."

"The Language Learning Center offers hundreds of hours of video content in over 50 languages to students and faculty, with a growing library of video assets," said Bob Majors, Senior Computing Specialist, University of Washington. "With Amazon Elastic Transcoder, we've been very impressed with how easy it is to convert our content into versions that work well on the web and on mobile devices."

"Zuffa encodes videos of the Ultimate Fighting Championship and prides itself on delivering the best and most up to date content to its fans. Amazon's Elastic Transcoder has the horsepower to scale for very large videos, even hundreds of gigabytes in size and this will help us continue to be leaders in the digital space," said Christy King, VP Technology R&D, Zuffa, LLC.

OneScreen is a technology solutions provider that connects video producers, publishers, and advertisers across all screens through its Media Graph platform. "At OneScreen, we are excited to add Amazon Elastic Transcoder to our broad utilization of the AWS cloud," said Patrick Ting, CTO, OneScreen, Inc. "With the scalability and cost-efficiency the service offers, we're able to pass those benefits on to our producer and aggregator partners, making it easier for them to bring high quality content to the market."

Amazon Elastic Transcoder offers simple pay-as-you-go pricing. Customers are charged based on the number of minutes they need to transcode and the selected resolution. There are no upfront fees or minimum commitments required. To help customers understand how this service can be used with their applications, AWS is providing a free tier of service, in which up to the first 20 minutes of content transcoded each month is provided free of charge. Amazon Elastic Transcoder is available in six regions: US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), US West (N. California), EU (Ireland), Asia Pacific (Singapore) and Asia Pacific (Japan). Customers can get started with Amazon Elastic Transcoder by visiting http://aws.amazon.com/elastictranscoder.

Sotology ? Auto Insurance Basics

The amount of drivers on the road increases each year. This could lead to an increased likelihood of a car accident for you and your family. If you get in a car wreck, the auto insurance you own can make a big difference in how much you have to pay. So how can you figure out what insurance you need and how much you should buy? Required coverage varies by state/province but usually includes the following: Liability: Pays for the expenses you have caused to others in a car collision, including injury and property damage. It also covers your defense and court costs if you are sued. Local laws usually mandate minimum amounts of liability insurance, but higher amounts are available and usually recommended. Personal Injury Protection: Personal injury insurance is mandated in some states and is optional in others. Sometimes referred to as no-fault coverage, this pays the medical treatment for you or your passengers regardless of who was at fault. It may also cover lost earnings, service replacement and funeral expenses. The minimum amount of this insurance is typically set by local government. Medical Payments: This type of coverage can be purchased in states that are not considered no-fault and will pay regardless of who is responsible for an accident. If this type of coverage is purchased, the insured person will receive coverage for all types of medical and funeral expenses. Collision: This pays for damages to your vehicle caused by an accident. Comprehensive: Cover your vehicle from all non-collision damages by purchasing this type of coverage. This may include protection from burglary, vandalism, and weather damage. Uninsured Motorist: If you are in an accident with an uninsured driver, this type of insurance will make sure you are covered. Under-Insured Motorist: Similar to uninsured motorist protection, this kind of insurance protects you against people driving without sufficient insurance coverage. Other types of coverage, like car rental, are also available. Homeowners Insurance Mississauga ON

UFC on Fox 6 results: Demetrious Johnson retains title, ?Rampage? loses in Octagon finale

CHICAGO -- The UFC's stop in the Windy City had two great knockouts, a champion holding onto his belt, and the last fight of a one-time champ.

Despite a strong start by John Dodson, Demetrious Johnson held onto his championship belt with a unanimous decision. The judges saw it 48-47, 49-46, 48-47 for Johnson.

Unsurprisingly, Johnson and Dodson fought a fast-paced first two rounds. Johnson tried to slow things down in the first round with a takedown. While he did get Dodson to to the ground, the challenger popped back to his feet quickly.

Dodson dropped Johnson twice in the second round, and shook off Johnson's take down attempts with a great sprawl. Johnson seemed to have a hard time even getting close to Dodson to land a punch.

[Related: T.J. Grant and Ryan Bader shine at UFC on Fox 6]

A Johnson knee in the fourth round caused a small fight stoppage. Dodson's hand was on the ground as Johnson threw a knee to Dodson's head, which is an illegal strike. The bout was stopped as doctors checked Dodson's eye and Johnson was warned. The fight went on, but not without plenty of boos from the crowd in Chicago.

When the fight restarted, it was all Johnson. He controlled Dodson against the cage, and threw knees that busted up Dodson's face. Johnson was able to get a takedown at the beginning of the fifth round, too. Though boos rained down, Johnson kept the fight against the cage.

Later, the crowd got behind him as Johnson elevated, tightened his legs around Dodson's torso and threw elbows. It was a creative move that likely could only happen in the flyweight division. Johnson finished the round with Dodson against the cage, and knee after knee after knee to the body and face.

Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson vs. Glover Teixeira

If this really was Quinton "Rampage" Jackson's last fight in the UFC, it wasn't one to remember. He was outstruck and outwrestled by Glover Teixeira throughout their bout. Teixeira took the fight 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 on the judges' cards.

Teixeira's first round was his best, as he was able to take Jackson down early and mount him and take his back. Late in the round, Teixeira knocked Jackson down with a punch and looked close to finishing, but wasn't able to end the fight.

The rest of the fight featured a worn out Jackson trying to avoid Teixeira's takedown attempts unsuccessfully. Jackson threw some big punches, and even jawed at Teixeira during the bout, but he wasn't able to score any big offense.

While this fight will be remembered for being Jackson's last UFC bout, Teixeira scored his third straight UFC win on Saturday night. He looked impressive against the former champ.

Anthony Pettis vs. Donald Cerrone

Anthony Pettis won his much anticipated bout with Donald Cerrone by landing big, memorable strikes. Pettis was getting the better of their striking exchanges early, which set him up for a big finish. Pettis threw a kick that landed hard on Cerrone's body, then finished with a punch. Cerrone fell to the ground in a heap, and the fight was stopped at 2:35 in the first round.

Pettis lost his first fight in the UFC after coming from the WEC as the champ, but he's been winning ever since. He has wins over Joe Lauzon, Jeremy Stephens and now Cerrone. After the fight, he made a pitch to UFC president Dana White.

"I want my title shot. I should have had it years ago. People say I can?t wrestle because of the Guida fight, but I had a serious shoulder injury. Now I am 100 percent. No one can do in the Octagon what I can do."

While lightweight champion Benson Henderson has a fight set up with Gilbert Melendez, a shot for Pettis isn't unwarranted. It would be a rematch of their WEC title fight, which Pettis won in the promotion's final fight.

Ricardo Lamas vs. Erik Koch

Lamas won the first round by constantly pressuring Koch against the cage. It wasn't exactly the most thrilling round to have start a card on network television, but it led to a thrilling second round. Lamas took advantage of Koch's slip, and then finished the fight with nasty, nasty ground and pound. Lamas started with elbows, then started with strikes that cut open Koch's face. Koch had no answer for Lamas' relentless strikes, and the bout was stopped at 2:32 in the second round.

Lamas thought his performance warranted a title shot.

"I?ve beat Cub Swanson, I?ve beat Hioki and now I?ve beat Koch. All those guys were supposed to be fighting for the title at one point. I beat them all. We?re all here to be world champ and I am no different. I want the winner of Aldo vs Edgar next week. I don?t care who wins, I want the winner."

New California rules protect employees - Business Management Daily

The start of the New Year saw the enactment of several new California employment laws, including one that requires accommodation of employees? religious dress and grooming needs.

AB1964 requires employers to ac??com?modate an employee?s or job applicant?s ?religious dress? or ?grooming practices.? Religious dress includes the wearing or carrying of religious clothing, head or face coverings, jewelry or other artifacts. Religious grooming practices include those concerning head, facial or body hair. The practices must be part of the individual?s observance of his or her religious creed.

Employers may not segregate or reassign individuals because of their religious dress or grooming practices.

State government codes 12926 and 12940 regulate implementation of the law.

Dana White?s video blog involves a frozen waterfall, a zipline and a cold shoulder

Check out Dana White's video blog, and ponder that he had to turn all of his waterfalls on so the pipes at his house wouldn't burst. Don't they insulate pipes in Las Vegas? Also, notice which fighter he doesn't say hello to before the UFC on Fox 6 press conference.

Enjoy, and don't forget to follow Cagewriter on Twitter for the latest from UFC on Fox 6. Today, it's Jon Jones' fan Q and A, and the weigh-ins.

Daily Kos: Treating boys and girls differently

This is going to be a bit of a stream of consciousness diary. I do not have any particular answers here, just random thoughts. First, some background - I coach a math team for homeschoolers age 14 and below. This is my 15th year. I try to be as welcoming as possible to girls. Our meetings are very cooperative. We sit around tables in small groups working on interesting problems together. I try to group beginner girls together. We have several high school student helpers who are alums of the group, and I try to put the girl helpers with the younger girls to serve as role models. All the kids seem to really enjoy it, and I think the format is particularly good for fostering girls active participation. I think the fact that most of the kids have never attended an institutional school might be an interesting part of the dynamics, but since I have never led a group like this for school kids I am not sure how if affects things.

There is an interesting article from an MIT economics professor Here. He looks at data from the American Mathematics Competition exams, which are given to several hundred high school students every year, and analyzes the gender breakdown. His thesis is that the strong girls tend to be much more clustered at particular programs than the strong boys, and that those programs may be doing something different that particularly encourages girls.

I would like to think that my own program is particularly encouraging to girls. But when I think about the dozen or so kids I have had over the years who have been in the top 2% or so of a national cohort, there has been only one girl. I do not think that there has been female talent going unencouraged in my group. I think I just have not gotten the same sort of math obsessed girls as boys.

I also think that parents are a strong factor. Since this is a homeschooler group, I get to know the parents well. We have quite a few dads who are engineers, programmers etc. ?There are a few moms like that. Bu more of the moms are themselves math phobic. They want their kids in my group because they feel very insecure in their ability to teach their homeschoolers math past basic arithmetic. I encourage parents to participate along with the kids. Some do, more don't. The ones I have had who seem to flee from the room when the math starts have been moms. So I think the issue is much more culturally pervasive than just teachers and schools.

Hereis a bonus interesting article on girls in STEM fields. This one has the thesis that young women are choosing not to go into hard science PhD programs not because they are not adequately prepared (ED - or could not get in), but because they have made a calculation that medical school is a better route.

ED - Wow, my diary has been rescued! Would it be too girly to swoon?

Skin Cancer Screening Apps Are Unreliable But Quick | Seattle ...

Screen Shot 2013-01-23 at 3.23.43 PMYou know me, I?m enthusiastic about apps and online health content and innovating health care delivery. But we do have to be?thoughtful?about how we use and integrate new technology.

One in 5 smart phone?users?in the US has a health app on their phone. With over 50% of American adults owning a smartphone, that?s a lot of people with health apps walking around. Although the most common apps that people download typically tracks the food they eat or the exercise they complete, the over $700 million-dollar-a-year generating industry is teeming with new health?products?every day. In pediatrics, I see more phones out during the first newborn check and subsequent weight and feeding appointments than at any other time.

Most new parents that come to see me are tracking their baby?s poop, pee, feeding, diapers, or new milestones?and many are doing so using their phone. Subsequently, most of the children coming into our society today are not only tracked with technology, they will grow up with parents who use tools to help protect and support their lives. Using applications to prevent, diagnose, treat, and ultimately cure disease is not really just a dream anymore. It turns out these applications to support our own health are clearly becoming a part of the health care of the present-future.

The effectiveness of these apps remains imperfectly proven. Just last week, a study published in JAMA Dermatology found that apps advertised to improve diagnosis of cancer highly variable in their ability to help patients. ?Researchers and doctors at the University of Pittsburgh set out to study popular mobile and web-based apps designed to help patients identify potential skin cancers. Specifically, they?evaluated?apps advertised to pick up the most deadly type of skin cancer, malignant melanoma.

  • Researchers acted like patients, they searched app stores with search terms: ?skin, skin cancer, melanoma, mole? to identify applications on the market.
  • They then selected 4 apps to study that allowed the users to upload photos of moles. Researchers used 188 photos obtained in clinic from patients just prior to mole removal. The researchers had the benefit of knowing the ultimate diagnosis of all the 188 moles they uploaded to the applications. Of those 188 moles, 60 ended up being diagnosed as malignant melanoma.
  • ?3 apps worked by evaluating the photo and providing feedback (?atypical? versus ?typical? or ?problematic? versus ?okay?). ?One app included in the study sent the uploaded mole photo for review to a board certified dermatologist.
  • None of the apps were perfectly reliable. In all, 3 out of 4 apps missed 30% or more of the moles that were melanoma,?categorizing?them as non-concerning. The app that proved most effective in picking up skin cancer was the one that functioned more like a telemedicine app where individual photos were sent to a board-certified dermatologist. Even so, it still missed true melanomas (1 in 53) and wasn?t specific in diagnosis.
  • In 3 of the apps, patients had a near instantaneous response?uploading the photo and getting a response. In the telemed app where it was sent out, responses arrived within 24 hours.
  • Researchers concluded the study with concerns, ?This potential [misuse of the apps] is of particular concern in times of economic hardship, when uninsured and even insured patients, deterred by the cost of copayments for medical visits, may turn to these applications as alternatives to physician evaluation.?

Don?t jump to too many conclusions. Just because these 4 apps don?t work well to diagnose skin cancer, it doesn?t mean we?re not moving in the correct direction. And this study doesn?t prove that patients use these apps without their doctors. Having improved ways to complete mole?surveillance and?chronicle?changes in moles will be increasingly important for those with high risk skin conditions or family history. Some apps that track and store photos of moles for comparissons were not compared and may help educate and support patients. What we know now is that apps designed to triage or diagnose moles as ?atypical? versus ?typical? or ?melanoma? versus ?normal? may not be ready for prime time, especially if they don?t involve expert opinion. It?s important that you see your dermatologist or physician for expert mole checks and biopsies when indicated. ?If you?re worried about your moles, or moles on your children talk with a physician. And if you use the apps, do what most people online do when they come to a diagnosis, go in and consult with an expert for confirmation.

Nipping Cyber-Bullying In The Bud | Tempo - News in a Flash

By Jaye C. Bautista

Manila, Philippines ? We?ve all heard about cyber-bullying and more so, lately, here in our country ? a bill is being passed about it but as unpleasant as its effects are on people, there are still those who aren?t too keen about passing the law that would see perpetrators serving time in the slammer!?

Well, back on the subject. Here?s an update on this. The Philippine government has asked the Supreme Court to lift the temporary restraining order (TRO) on the controversial Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, and junk 15 petitions contesting the law. According to GMA News Online last Monday, the government, through the country?s Office of the Solicitor General (OSG), argue the issuance of the temporary restraining order on the implementation of cybercrime law ?should not be made to rest merely on purely legal arguments, without evidence being introduced, for or against the validity of a challenged statute?.

Now with the TRO lifted there again is the uproar on the Cyber Crimes law in the land. But I ask myself, why not, really? The law only ?regulates and penalizes? acts defined as cybercrime such as hacking and believe me I for one would love to see those perennial hackers of mine take on some punishment.

The Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, officially recorded as Republic Act No. 10175, is a law in the Philippines approved on 12 September 2012. It aims to address legal issues concerning online interactions and the Internet in the Philippines. Among the cybercrime offenses included in the bill are cybersquatting, cybersex, child pornography, identity theft, illegal access to data and libel.

While hailed for penalizing illegal acts done via the internet that were not covered by old laws, the act has been criticized for its provision on criminalizing libel, which is perceived to be a curtailment in freedom of expression. The Philippines? Cybercrime Prevention Act had been suspended for 120 days following restraining order against it by the Supreme Court in October. The law had come under fire for its vague definition of online libel, violation of personal rights and tough legal penalties for Internet defamation.

The cyber law her won?t infringe on people from using the Internet and expressing their thoughts. It?s not a ?gag order.? If any, this will give us a blanket of protection. It?s not out to curtail one?s freedom of speech it?s going against ?abusers? of that freedom. In my honest opinion, I AM ALL FOR IT. If only for the fact that I?m a constant target of every kind of cyber bullying, well I?ve had my accounts (email, Facebook even my phones!) hacked over and over again.

Cybercrime to address the perennial crimes spawned by the Internet such as online pornography and cyber prostitution. Those evil doers are who the cyber bill should be for. Freedom of expression shouldn?t mean freedom to hack away at anybody?s emails, social media site profiles or posting personal videos and malicious images. And it?s no doubt we need a law on.

Luvta hear from yah!

Netflix lost $105 million on international streaming business in Q4 ...

The euro zone economy took a step closer to recovery this month as the rate of decline in the bloc?s private sector eased more than expected, a business survey showed on Thursday.

But in an indication of the hurdles left to scale, Spain?s unemployment surged to 26 percent in the fourth quarter, a record high since measurements began in the 1970s, as a prolonged recession and deep spending cuts left almost 6 million people out of work at the end of last year.

The manufacturing survey published by Markit supports European Central Bank President Mario Draghi?s assertion that the 17-nation currency union is benefiting from ?positive contagion? but still hints at an economic contraction in the first quarter of 2013.

Markit?s Flash Composite Eurozone Purchasing Managers? Index, which surveys around 5,000 companies and is seen as a good growth indicator, jumped to 48.2 from December?s 47.2, beating expectations for a rise to 47.5.

While the index has now held below the 50 mark that separates growth from contraction in all but one of the last 17 months, Markit said the data suggested conditions in the bloc were improving.

?We shouldn?t get too gloomy about those numbers,? Chris Williamson, a data collator at Markit, said. ?There is a turning point that took place towards the end of last year and the beginning of this year so things are picking up. Any downturn is looking likely to end in the first half.?

He added, however, that the manufacturing index was ?still consistent? with gross domestic product in the 17-country bloc falling at a quarterly rate of about 0.2 percent to 0.3 percent.

The euro zone economy contracted in the second and third quarters of last year, meeting the technical definition of recession, and the downturn is expected to have deepened in the fourth quarter.

Earlier data from Germany, Europe?s largest economy and the bloc?s growth engine, showed its private sector expanded at its fastest pace in a year.

In neighboring France, data from Markit showed that business activity shrank in January at the fastest pace since the trough of the global financial crisis. The preliminary composite purchasing managers? index, covering activity in the services and manufacturing sectors combined, came out at 42.7 for the month, slumping from 44.6 in December.

Spain?s unemployment rate rose to 26 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012, or 5.97 million people, the National Statistics Institute said on Thursday, up from 25 percent in the previous quarter and more than double the European Union average.

?We haven?t seen the bottom yet and employment will continue falling in the first quarter,? Jos? Luis Mart?nez, a strategist with Citigroup, said.

Spain sank into its second recession since 2009 at the end of 2011 after a burst housing bubble left millions of low-skilled laborers out of work and sliding private and business sentiment gutted consumer spending and imports.

Efforts by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy?s government to control one of the euro zone?s largest deficits through billions of euros of spending cuts and tax increases have fueled general malaise, further hampering demand.

Still, Mr. Draghi of the E.C.B. is taking an optimistic view, declaring earlier this month that the euro zone economy would recover later in 2013 and that there was now a ?positive contagion? effect in play.

Europe?s top central banker cited falling bond yields, rising stock markets and historically low volatility as evidence for this, causing several forecasters to ditch expectations for an imminent cut in euro zone interest rates.

GM's North American chief considered for CEO job in 2010: book

DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Co's North American president, Mark Reuss, was considered for the top job at the U.S. automaker in 2010 before his lack of seasoning led the board to the current chief executive, Dan Akerson, according to an excerpt from a forthcoming book by GM's former CEO, Ed Whitacre.

As GM, which restructured in bankruptcy with the help of a $50 billion U.S. taxpayer bailout, moved toward its fall 2010 initial public offering, Whitacre told the board he would not continue as CEO. His idea for his replacement was Reuss, according to the excerpt published on Wednesday by Fortune magazine.

"Mark had zoomed up the executive chain in record time; he went from midlevel engineer to the No. 2 person in the company in the space of a year, more or less," Whitacre said of Reuss. "The plus was that Mark was showing a lot of poise and management potential. The downside was that he hadn't been in the job long enough to prove himself as a CEO."

Whitacre's book, "American Turnaround: Reinventing AT&T and GM and the Way We Do Business in the USA," is scheduled to be published early next month.

GM announced Whitacre's exit in August 2010, and Akerson assumed leadership of the Detroit company the following month.

Reuss declined to comment on Whitacre's book.

GM said the comments were Whitacre's and the company was focused on the future.

"General Motors is now a company guided by new leadership and employees who value the customer first in everything we do," company spokesman Greg Martin said in an email.

"We're grateful for Ed's leadership during a difficult transition for the company," he added. "It's important that we not forget the lessons of our recent past, but it's even more important that we keep our full attention and energy on building great cars and trucks and creating sustained profitability and shareholder value."

Reuss, 49, is perceived by some Wall Street analysts and GM insiders as a potential heir apparent to Akerson. Other possible successors are Vice Chairman Steve Girsky, Chief Financial Officer Dan Ammann and global product development chief Mary Barra.

Akerson, 64, has not given a timeline for his retirement.

Whitacre said GM's board in 2010 discussed its options, weighing the idea of a nonexecutive chairman working with Reuss or another candidate while they gathered more seasoning on the job. The board was split, however.

"Some people thought a nonexecutive chairman wasn't a bad idea," Whitacre said. "Other people really didn't care. A few didn't like the idea at all.

"One thing everybody agreed on: Mark had a lot of potential," Whitacre added. "The only concern was his short time in the job. If we asked him to step into the CEO's job, and it didn't work out, that would be a disaster for Mark - and an even bigger disaster for GM. The company needed stability. The revolving door in the CEO's suite had to stop. At this point Dan Akerson volunteered to do the job."

Whitacre said Akerson wanted to be chairman and CEO from the start.

"He had no interest in being a nonexecutive chairman, or a split title. I could certainly understand, because that's what I would have wanted if I'd been in his shoes," Whitacre said.

"When Dan put his hand up, that took care of the problem," Whitacre said. "Not very elegant, I will admit. But that's how it played out."

ATIV Odyssey hitting Verizon January 24th for $50

ATIV Odyssey hitting Verizon on January 24th for $50

We knew it was coming and, with very little warning, it's practically here. Samsung's 4-inch, budget Windows Phone 8 offering -- the ATIV Odyssey -- is hitting store shelves and Verizon airwaves on Thursday January 24th for $49.99. Well, with a two-year contract and after a $50 mail in rebate, that is. So you'll have to shell out $100 up front -- a price that will likely become semi-permanent when the promotional period ends. While the WVGA screen and dual-core 1.5GHz processor may turn off the spec-obsessed, we're sure its low price, LTE radio and pretty little tiles will win over at least a few shoppers. If you need a quick refresher on this guy's deets check out the PR after the break.

Alongside these companies, Burtons Biscuits, CH & Co caterers, Co-operative Foods, Dairy Crest and Lexington Catering have also made pledges to help their customers eat and drink fewer calories. They have joined the other companies who made commitments last March when the calorie reduction pledge was first launched.

Public Health Minister Anna Soubry said:

?Being overweight and not eating well is bad for our health. To reverse the rising tide of obesity we have challenged the nation to reduce our calorie intake by five billion calories a day. On average that?s just 100 calories less a day per person.

?Today?s announcement will cut the calories and sugar by up to 10 per cent in leading brands like Lucozade and Ribena. Through the Responsibility Deal we are already achieving real progress in helping people reduce the calories and salt in their diet. Overall, more than 480 companies including many leading high street brands have signed up to the Responsibility Deal.

?All of the major supermarkets have now committed to removing artificial trans fats, and over 70 per cent of fast food and takeaway meals sold on the high street have calories clearly labelled, but more needs to be done.

?We are encouraged by the extra businesses which have signed up today but I want to see even more progress.? All in the food industry have a part to play and I now expect companies which are not yet taking action to come forward and make pledges.?

Chair of the Responsibility Deal Food Network Dr Susan Jebb said:

?I?m pleased to see the soft drinks manufacturers, like GSK, AG Barr and Britvic join Coca-Cola and PepsiCo to make some very real commitments to help consumers cut down on their calories as they take control of their weight.?

?I hope we will now see others, including the out of home sector, taking a careful look at how they can build on this and come to the table with new commitments to encourage their customers choose smaller portions and swap to lower calorie options.?

England has some of the highest obesity rates in the developed world with 60? per cent of adults and one third of 10 and 11 year olds being overweight or obese. The Government?s Obesity Call to Action outlined that consuming too many calories is at the heart of the problem and through initiatives like the Responsibility Deal calorie reduction pledge concerted action is needed.
