Watch: Costumed Surfers Hang 10 for Halloween - Newport Beach ...

Despite the Ghost Busters wading through the surf, that wasn?t the spirit of Pocahontas haunting the waves at Bolsa Chica State Beach on Sunday morning.

It was Seal Beach resident Nina Vafaie. Vafaie was one of 50 costumed surfers to catch waves as part of an impromptu Halloween Hang 10.

?It?s really just a bunch of friends surfing in costume,? said Vafaie, owner of East West Design.

It began about six years ago when Vafaie decided wear her Halloween costume while surfing, and it has grown each year since with an informal costume contest. This year, Vafaie and pal Teri Rodenas handed out flyers inviting surfers to show up at Sunday?s high tide in costume. Their friend Guy Leo judged the costumes with prizes such as gift baskets made by Rodenas. Prizes were awarded for categories such as Most Creative Costume, Most Waves Caught While Wearing a Costume and Best Wave.

In true laid-back surfer fashion, Leo made up new judging categories during the contest to accommodate more winners. He even ripped the tag off one trophy to create an under-12 category for the kids, said Vafaie.

?We had a lot of kids this year,? said Vafaie.

Although she has never publicized the event, it?s open to anyone and is usually the weekend before Halloween, Vafaie added

?It?s grown quite a bit over the last few years,? she said. ?It?s still grassroots -- a bunch of surfing friends getting together to surf in costume and have some fun. It?s all done in fun, everyone is welcome to join in and it?s always been a fun way to kick off the Halloween week.?

The Dohvin Tree

The World Tree is dying, and all the world is descending into chaos. Are there still heroes left who will be able to stand and fight to prevent the promised apocalypse of legends?

This RP, though based in a fantasy world and making use of magic, is still grounded in a world dominated by the world of physics and reality. So here's an example of what I do not EVER want to see out of someone.

Age: 16
Fighting Style: Makes heavy use of hard styles with tight blocks and swift, fierce strikes.
Bio: Despite their youth, they are the best known warrior around!

These three details will earn your character a one way trip to the RP graveyard. Teenagers, by very nature of their bodily growth and features, will never, NEVER, be able to be the strongest or most feared warriors of any race or be the most proficient in any weapon form. It doesn't matter how much you might otherwise known about combat or weaponry, a teenager will never be stronger, faster, or more skilled than a seasoned adult character.

So please, no teenagers folks. Teenagers are good for romance RP's, sci fi horror RP's where they don't have to have any special abilities or talents, and maybe the occasional Gods vs Men RP where they can get away with supernatural abilities by being a God or Goddess.

The youngest age I will accept in this RP is 21, no younger. At that point, your body has, more or less, stopped growing and has hit the age where its physical prime can be reached. However, be mindful that this is not an invitation to make a 21 year old the best archer the world has ever known. If I find any profiles trying to pass off someone this young as a prodigy or some sort of ultimate warrior, I will not accept it. While Kyero may be the best swordsman in his village, he has never competed against others outside his village and therefore has never been able to test himself against other warriors. If he were to come across a warrior who is older and more experienced, he would lose in a one on one confrontation with him.

In other words, I want characters who are young enough to have room to grow, but strong enough to hold their own in combat without finding a way to miraculously come out of every combat situation they find themselves in without a scratch.

Thank you!

Accused UBS rogue trader: 'I lost control'

LONDON (Reuters) - Former UBS trader Kweku Adoboli told a London court on Tuesday he had "lost control" of his trading in the summer of 2011 but insisted he never acted dishonestly in the frantic weeks that resulted in losses of $2.3 billion.

Adoboli also attacked the culture of investment banks, arguing that compliance rules were "aspirational" and that traders knew they had to bend rules to achieve the goals set by senior management.

The 32-year-old British-educated Ghanaian, who used to be a senior trader on the Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) desk at UBS's London offices, was arrested on September 15, 2011. He denies two counts of fraud and four of false accounting.

The prosecution says he traded far in excess of his risk limits and concealed his positions with fictitious accounting. Adoboli says everything he did was for the benefit of UBS.

The ex-trader said his troubles started on July 1, 2011, when, under intense pressure from fellow traders and managers, he abandoned a long-standing bearish stance and flipped his trading position to a long one. Just after he did so, the market started to sell off.

"I lost control. The result of that loss of control was an increasing number of breaks (accounting problems), a more frantic trading activity, a less controlled decision-making process," he said.

Later that month, as losses mounted in a volatile market, Adoboli recalled that exhaustion and stress levels reached such a peak that it caused him to briefly break up with his long-term girlfriend.

He said that on the evening of July 23 the couple had been supposed to go out for dinner but he found himself unable to talk to her.

"I went a bit catatonic. I was curled up on my bed. She was asking me what was wrong. I just couldn't explain," he said.

About two weeks later he reunited with his girlfriend and she, over time, persuaded him to stop trying to recoup the losses and open up to someone about his true position.

"In the end she was the strength. She was the person who said to me 'Look, Kwek, if you can't do this, if you can't fix this, then look within yourself and maybe go and tell someone.'

"This is going to kill you. You can't keep fighting this battle that you are clearly not winning," Adoboli quoted his girlfriend as telling him.

He said that by the end of August he came around to her point of view.

"I had told loads of people different stories about what the trades were to buy us more time to recoup the losses. Eventually I accepted that I would have to tell someone about the true nature, the full scale of the losses," he said.

MORE RISKS, MORE PROFIT

In a separate strand of his evidence, Adoboli said he did not believe he had done anything dishonest because he was trying to deliver what UBS management wanted: greater risks in pursuit of greater profits.

He said that in the spring of 2011 the ETFs desk was doing so well that it was held up as an example to other UBS trading desks.

"There were no secrets. There was no hiding. There was no holding back," he said, describing that period.

"We were told to go for it. We went for it. We were told to push the boundaries ... We found the boundary. We found the edge. We fell off the edge and I got arrested," he said.

Adoboli said UBS and investment banks in general set traders unrealistic objectives and everyone knew they could only be met with a certain amount of rule-bending in areas like risk limits.

"The policies were aspirational policies, and on the ground - at the coalface - you had to put in place mechanisms to achieve what you had to achieve," he said.

"In order to achieve what the bank leadership wanted us to achieve, we cannot stick to the policy. We are allowed, it is approved, in reality, that we're going to try to meet in the middle somewhere."

The trial continues. (Editing by Robin Pomeroy)

Can we be harmed after we die? - Business ethics and other thoughts

In the last few weeks two news stories have been particularly prominent. The first concerns the revelations that erstwhile national treasure Jimmy Savile was actually a predatory paedophile who took advantage of his position as a prominent broadcaster and charity fundraiser to sexually abuse women and children, particularly the vulnerable.

The second concerns cycling legend and seven times Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong, who has finally been exposed as orchestrating ??the most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program? in sport.

Both stories have traced the public fall from grace of two figures who not long ago were idolised. Both, in their different ways, are now widely despised.

There is one significant different between the two situations, however, and this is that Jimmy Savile died last year, while Lance Armstrong is still alive. The coincidence of their shamings bring into focus a tricky question concerning the nature of harm. There are many different accounts of what constitutes human well-being, but on?many of them an individual must be alive in order for their life to go better or worse ? once you are dead, nothing can harm you.

Such accounts rely on the seemingly unobjectionable thought that if an event in no way affects the experiences that the individual has, then it cannot plausibly harm them. Examples of such approaches include hedonistic theories of well-being that focus on experiences of pleasure and pain, theories that have, for example, underpinned well known theories of ethics such as Mill?s Utilitarianism.

On this account, Lance Armstrong has suffered significant (deserved) harm from the revelations about his behaviour, while Jimmy Savile has not. Another way of putting it would be that Savile ?got away with? his (alleged) crimes.

But is this entirely true? These two examples provide an interesting case study for what is known as the ?posthumous harm thesis?, the idea that individuals can, in fact, be harmed after they are dead (for more on this, see section 3 here). One way to support this thesis would be to base well-being and harm in the extent to which an individual?s desires are satisfied, and further to claim that such desire satisfaction is still significant posthumously ? it is perfectly possible, for example, for someone to desire when alive that they will be remembered fondly when dead.

There are of course objections to these claims, in particular the Epicurean challenge that, roughly, an event can only affect us causally but that we do not exist to be affected when we are dead, and an event cannot causally affect something in the past (us while we were alive).

This is a pretty compelling objection. Yet we can also make an argument that the value of a life for that individual should be assessed as a whole, standing back from any particular temporal position. And if we do that, then it is not clear that the event occurring after death is so irrelevant to how well their life has gone for them.

It is certainly tempting to think that, for Jimmy Savile, life has gone very badly over the last few weeks, even though he is dead. And therefore he did not, entirely, get away with it.

Real Estate News ? Looking For Land For Sale In Northern Wisconsin

To decide which kind of plot, there are some considerations that one needs to put in mind. A keen eye is necessary before buying land for sale in northern Wisconsin. Some of the factors include; type of soil, location, amenities, usage, orientation and the slope of the plot. These are the most cardinal rules to follow before making a buy decision on immovable property.

The location of plot is of utmost important. Usually local authorities do categorize plot into different zones and this will determine a lot of things like price and the use of property. It is very unwise to purchase plot close to a dump site. Though this may be cheap, the health hazards are great and such a place should be struck off from the list of considerations.

Authorities do control plot use to a great extent. This is done to create consistency in usage of property. Within city limits, plot is categorized into two- residential and commercial sections. In such cases, the authorities have laws that are to be followed to letter. In rural areas however, property use has little restrictions and one will find this to be very flexible.

Amenities to make do have a major bearing on the decision to buy plot for most people. These amenities include; garbage collection, connection of power and good roads are easily available in urban areas. Beyond city limits, however, these amenities are not available. This will need one to incur heavy costs to obtain such services.

Depending on the geography of the area, the slope of plot is likely to affect a number of factors such as usage and cost. A very steep plot will need leveling in order for meaningful construction to take place and this is an additional cost to the buyer. Drainage of a steep gradient of plot will to have to be re-structured for the plot to be suitable for safe habitation and general usage.

The relevance comes in during usage. Property to be used for agricultural purposes should be fertile alluvial and black loamy soils although the type of crop too will decide the type of soil. On the other hand, building is not suitable in sandy soil. However, such ground can be reinforced.

Weather is too a major factor to check for before purchasing immovable property. The direction that the sun rises and sets is important for architects who then design plans that are suitable for the plot. Wind is considered to in the positioning of a house in a certain property as it normally blows in a specific direction.

The above factors should be followed if one is to make the best decision to buy land for sale in northern Wisconsin. One needs to be cautious in order not to get into a land deal that is in a court case. This will make one avoid unnecessary costs and troubles.

Apple iPad mini - Online Gambling News

Jamie Hinks
October 24, 2012
No Comments

ipad mini appleApple?s new iPad mini has left mobile gaming firms bamboozled and wondering whether it?s a phone or a tablet. Charles Cohen, CEO of Probability, told CalvinAyre.com that he?s still waiting to work out if the new device is simply a ?iPad shrunken down or the iPhone scaled up? or if the device will ?lend itself to a whole new approach?

The new device is aiming to derail a number of dangerous competitors such as Google and Amazon that have chosen to focus on smaller screened tablets than the iPad. Bad news for them is that Apple reneged on their earlier plan not to develop a smaller tablet. The price point of the iPad mini, starting at ?269, is slightly more than its competitors, although Probability CEO Cohen told CalvinAyre.com that he doesn?t envisage that being a problem.

?The price is a bit higher than I expected but it?s still a good entry level device and it?s much more attractive than the smaller, lighter and cheaper tabs out there at the moment,? he said. ?There are millions for whom this will be their first personal computing device and many more for whom it will replace the home desktop or PC.?

If you look at the tech-specs it?s clear this is anything but a cheap knock-off of the iPad though. It?s packing 7.9-inches of LED-backlit glory and weighs in at just 308g ? 53 percent lighter than the iPad ? and is 7.2mm thin. Many men will tell you it?s not about the size, it?s the way you use it, and the mini iPad could definitely make that boast. The powerful A5 chip means similar performance to its older, chunkier brother and it comes with 10-hours worth of battery. An HD camera on the back and 5 Megapixel one on the front is fairly standard for Apple tablets with WiFi, Siri and the new Lightning Connector coming as standard.

Cohen is salivating at the opportunities the device could open up, and added: ?We think this device could be huge for us (pun intended) particularly in the key battle for ?sofa time? where most mobile gambling takes place.?

There?s nothing quite like the excitement that surrounds an Apple device being released and the iPad mini will be no different. How mobile gaming firms harness the new screen will be interesting and even more noteworthy than that will be the effect the device has on other mobile operators such as Google and Amazon. Watch this space.

'DWTS' goes 'Gangnam Style' in hilarious routine

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

Adam Taylor / ABC

Gilles Marini and pro partner Peta Murgatroyd perform their part of the "Gangnam Style" team dance.

Oppa ballroom style! During a rare prerecorded installment of "Dancing With the Stars," several all-stars put fun way above form and delivered pure entertainment with possibly the best "Gangnam Style" tribute -- and certainly the best team dance -- to date.

OK, sure, technically speaking, Tuesday night's team dance didn't exactly represent the finer points of ballroom (or any other kind) of dance. But anyone who watched it would be hard pressed to deny that the freestyle put on by Gilles Marini, Kirstie Alley, Kelly Monaco, Emmitt Smith and their respective partners was exactly what the competition needed.

Rather than simply staging yet another team routine that highlights a few strong moves and almost as many out-of-sync steps, Team Gangnam decided to turn the spotlight on a series of ridiculous moments from the viralest of viral videos with fast, chaotic (and sometimes sexy) abandon. From upside-down Kirstie to crouching-elevator Emmitt to seductive Kelly to barely-towel-clad Gilles, the dance had it all. And it had the audience out of their seats cheering.

Host Tom Bergeron called it the "the most fun (he's) had in 15 seasons" of the show, and he wasn't the only one raving.

"It wasn't tight, it wasn't together, but ... it was fun!" said head judge Len Goodman, who usually prefers his routines gag-free.

Fellow panelist Bruno Tonioli could barely contain himself. "Gilles, give me that towel," he begged. "I'm wetting myself!"

Gilles, ever the trouper when it comes to Bruno's requests, handed it over.

Carrie Ann Inaba dubbed it a "hot mess," but "crazy, fun insanity" too.

The effort earned the group a matching set of 9s, which will be added to their scores from the night before.

Speaking of the night before, the all-stars who gave it their all in Monday night's "Call Me Maybe" team routine performed their guilty-pleasure dances on Tuesday.

The high-scorer of the night was Sabrina Bryan. The Disney Channel star channeled her inner Disney princess in a Cinderella waltz set to her guilty pleasure song, "So This Is Love."

Before the routine, Sabrina said she hoped the dance would be her breakthrough effort of the season. But moments into the by-the-book routine, a bit of flawed footwork and a lack of content seemed sure to dash that dream.

That is until the judges chimed in. It seems Len and the gang just loved it. They couldn't get enough of the story, the moves and what Bruno called the "cartoonish and delicious" quality of it. Sabrina waltzed away with a near-perfect 29 points.

As for the others, they each trailed the former "Cheetah Girl" with 27 points for their routines.

Shawn Johnson took that score for a rumba that saw her break out of the high-energy, athletic routines she's performed so often this season. The "Titanic"-themed dance, aptly choreographed to "My Heart Will Go On," wasn't Shawn's best dance so far, but it was a refreshing change that highlighted her range. It also gave Carrie Ann a chance to nitpick a lift -- or a catch, depending on who you ask.

The score also fit Apolo Anton Ohno, who put on a hip-thrusting (too thrusting, according to Len) samba to "Give It to Me Baby." Most of the panel loved it, but Carrie Ann complained that "something is not quite right" with the "bright, shining star."

And Melissa Rycroft nabbed her 27 for a tango that lacked perfect posture, strong arm lines and the neck snap of a traditional take on the dance. The latter point isn't exactly a surprise. After all, Melissa suffered a herniated disc two days ago.

Still, Len didn't give her a break and felt he had to mention the lack of snap. That's when Tom reminded the resident grump that Melissa recently took a ride in an ambulance.

"You keep your witty comments to yourself," Len shot back.

Tom didn't contain his quick wit for long, adding, "That was more of a factual comment in an attempt to find your beating heart."

Snap!

Now that's one performance that deserved a perfect score.

Whose guilty-pleasure performance was the best of the night? Take our poll below and then share your thoughts about all of the dances -- including your team dance pick -- on our Facebook page.

Hurricane tort king wires another $1 million to pro-Obama Super PAC

AP

Steve Mostyn, 41, a Houston-based personal injury attorney, said he was inspired by President Barack Obama's performance in the Oct. 16 debate to donate another $1 million to a Democratic Super PAC run by former White House aides.

By Michael IsikoffNBC News

A wealthy Texas trial lawyer -- known as the king of hurricane torts --?wired $1 million to the main Super PAC backing President Barack Obama late last week, solidifying his standing as one of the chief bankrollers of Democratic causes in this year?s election.

With his latest seven figure donation, Houston personal injury lawyer Steve Mostyn -- an ardent foe of tort reform --?has?now contributed $3 million to Priorities USA Action, a Super PAC run by two former White House aides. His latest contribution -- in addition to another $500,000? given by his wife to an allied group -- underscores the heavy reliance of Democratic Super PACs on a small number of mega donors. (Super PACs are allowed to raise and spend unlimited amounts of money from corporations, unions and individuals.) ?

Mostyn told NBC News that he agreed to wire the additional $1 million last week after watching the second debate at Hofstra University on Long Island and getting?energized by the president?s more forceful performance than during the first debate.

?I needed to see some fight,? he said of the president?s performance. He also said he expects the Super PAC to use his cash to help fund more attack ads hammering Republican rival Mitt Romney over his Bain Capital past, portraying him as a heartless executive who destroys jobs rather than creates them. Although Priorities USA Action ads (and Obama campaign ads) hit that theme hard over the summer, now is when ?you?re speaking to low-information voters,? Mostyn said.

New campaign finance reports filed over the weekend show the Obama Super PAC is in relatively good shape to send the message. The group reported that it collected $15.2 million in September ? outraising Restore Our Future, the main pro-Romney Super PAC, for the second month in a row. (This figure predates Mostyn?s latest cash infusion.)

While GOP Super PACs have still outraised and so far outspent their?Democratic counterparts,?the combined total of $31.4 million raised by Priorities USA and its two allies (Majority PAC and House Majority PAC) shows they are now fully armed to compete against an expected pro-GOP ad blitz in the last two weeks.

But while the Obama campaign has touted its reliance on small donors, the most striking feature of the latest Democratic Super PAC numbers is the outsized role played by just a handful of super-rich mega donors in funding the group.

Of the $52 million that Priorities USA Action has raised for the entire election cycle, $19 million (or nearly 40) percent came from just six individuals. Besides Mostyn, these include: Jeffrey Katzenberg, the CEO of Dreamworks Animation, who has given?$3 million;? Fred Eychaner, a Chicago based media mogul whose print empire includes the Chicago Reader, who has given $3.5 million;? James? Simons, the hedge fund billionaire founder of Renaissance Technologies, who has given $3.5 million;? Irwin Jacobs, a San Diego billionaire and the founder and former CEO of Qualcomm ($2 million); and? Jon Stryker, a philanthropist and gay rights activist ($2 million.) Other big donations to Priorities USA Action last month included $1 million from director Steven Spielberg, $1 million from famed trial lawyer David Boies (who argued for Al Gore in the 2000 Florida recount case that went to the U.S. Supreme Court) and $300,000 from Sam Walton, the chairman of Walmart.???

The mega donor phenomenon is hardly unique to the Democrats, of course. These donations still pale next to the $40 million that Las Vegas gambling magnate Sheldon Adelson has funneled this cycle into GOP Super PACs,?including $10 million to the pro-Romney Restore Our Future. And the Romney Super PAC reported that Bob Perry, the publicity shy Texas homebuilder best known for helping fund the Swift Boat ads against John Kerry in 2004, gave another $2 million last month, bringing his total donations to $9 million. That means that Perry and Adelson alone have accounted for nearly 20 percent of the Restore Our Future?s total $111 million haul.?

Twinned with Perry?s cash, the Mostyn donations to Priorities USA Action gives the presidential contest the flavor of a Texas grudge match. The two men have been among the major funders of the years-long fight in Texas over tort reform. Perry (whose home-building company has been hit with massive multimillion-dollar lawsuits brought by trial lawyers) has helped bankroll Texans for Lawsuit Reform, a pro-business group that has fought to rein in lawsuits.? Mostyn, who has specialized in mass class-action lawsuits brought by hurricane victims, has been a major financier of the opposition.

A past president of the Texas Trial Lawyers Association, Mostyn has also been a somewhat controversial figure in state legal circles. He?s known as ?Hurricane Mostyn? due to the class-action lawsuit he brought against the Texas Wind Insurance Association (TWIA) on behalf of the victims of? Hurricane Ike, which devastated the Texas coast in 2008. The lawsuit, alleging the mishandling of insurance claims, led to a $189 million settlement -- $86 million of which reportedly went in fees to his law firm. That, in turn, triggered an increase in premium payments by the TWIA and calls by Republicans in the state Legislature to curb what were called the association?s ?out-of-control legal expenses.?

Like most big donors, Mostyn tells NBC News that his main concern is good government, not any special benefits he might receive from the White House (such as his private meeting with the president last spring at the W Hotel after he gave his first $2 million to Priorities USA Action.) He said he shares the general liberal distaste for Super PACs, but given the vast amounts flowing into the GOP Super PACs, he was persuaded to contribute to Priorities USA Action by Paul Begala and Bill Burton during a meeting aboard his yacht last spring: ?You don?t bring a knife to a gun fight,? he said.

Apple unveils next-generation iMac with slimmer design and Ivy Bridge, starting at $1,299

Apple unveils nextgeneration iMac with slimmer design and Ivy Bridge, starting at $1,299

Who said Apple's event was all about the little things? Apple just unveiled its first redesign to its iMac desktop in three years. The new all-in-one makes the widely expected leap to Intel's Ivy Bridge Core i5 and Core i7 processors, but also represents a much leaner and meaner replacement for the 2009-era template -- its edges are just 5mm thick, and it's constructed with "friction stir welding" as well as a gapless, less reflective display that's laminated together with the glass. Screen sizes remain the same and include both a 21.5-inch, 1080p model and a 27-inch, 2,560 x 1,400 model -- sorry, no Retina displays this year. They share 720p-capable front cameras with dual mics as well as NVIDIA's GeForce 600-era graphics, up to 32GB of RAM and a panoply of storage options that peak at 3TB of spinning storage, a 768GB SSD or what Apple calls a Fusion Drive that mixes both 128GB of flash with 1TB or 3TB of conventional storage (a hybrid drive, for those of us who've seen it before). There's no optical drive unless you plug in a USB option.

The 21.5-inch model ships in November, and will set you back $1,299 for a 2.7GHz Core i5, 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive; pony up for the 27-inch model at $1,799 and you'll get a 2.9GHz Core i5 as well as the same memory and storage. Apple's larger iMac doesn't ship until December, however, which will give some impulse buyers at least a brief respite.

Georgia State University's H. Elliott Albers, the Regents' Professor of Neuroscience and director of the Center for Behavioral Neuroscience, has received a four-year, $1.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study how the body's internal clock is "reset," a key to understanding more about sleep and other disorders affecting human health.

Albers' studies how the internal, or circadian, clock is synchronized to the day-night cycle so that it times many of the body's processes in a roughly 24-hour pattern. The clock is composed of about 10,000 neurons above the roof of the mouth.

The project funded by the grant will focus on the chemical process in which the clock is reset by light. Albers and his lab found they could mimic the effects of light seen by the eye on the clock by injecting a neurotransmitter, a chemical called glutamate, into the clock itself.

"Glutamate communicates light information from the eye into the clock," Albers said.

He said there are two parts of the internal clock, a non-clock element that receives information from other parts of the body and the clock itself.

"What we're trying to understand now is how the information from the non-clock part talks to the clock part and actually resets it," he said. "We're proposing that it takes several hours of neurotransmitter activity to actually reset the clock in response to even very brief exposure to light."

The neurotransmitter involved in this process, called GABA, is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, and understanding how it works could be a key to understanding basic communication among cells in brain.

GABA-active drugs are some of the most commonly prescribed drugs in the world for numerous issues, including sleep disorders and depression.

"We're potentially looking at different kinds of receptors that haven't really been seen before for GABA," Albers said. "This really could have an impact in understanding how GABA acts in the brain, which relates to lots of kinds of disorders."

Health problems related to shift work and jet lag are well known, but scientists are seeing more impacts of disrupting the internal clock on other diseases such as cancer.

Green Roof and Green Wall Market Growing Like Weeds ...

Green roofs and green walls will grow from a $5.3 billion market in 2011 into a $7.7 billion market in 2017, driven by mandates and incentives in cities worldwide, according to Lux Research. But while installations will increase 70 percent to 204 million square meters, costs and lack of validation will limit their rise.

Green roofs will account for $7 billion of the 2017 market, presenting a $2 billion opportunity to suppliers of polymeric materials such as geosynthetic fabrics and waterproof membranes, according to Building-Integrated Vegetation: Redefining the Landscape or Chasing a Mirage?

Green walls, meanwhile, will swell to a $680 million market, using $200 million worth of materials such as self-supporting polyurethane foam growth media.

Rapid urbanization over the past 50 years has caused air pollution, urban heat-island effects and loss of green spaces. To combat these and other environmental issues, cities such as Copenhagen, London, Singapore and Chicago have issued mandates or incentives for vegetated roofs to reduce storm-water volume, clean air pollutants, reduce the heat-island effect and sequester carbon dioxide.

However, it?s difficult to monetize the environmental benefits of green roofs and walls, and some wonder if building-integrated vegetation is merely a ?green curiosity,? says Aditya Ranade, Lux Research senior analyst and the lead author of the report.

While green roofs and walls do offer a multitude of environmental benefits, they face obstacles to widespread implementation, the report says. Installed cost ? $300/m2 to $500/m2 for green roofs and $900/m2 to $1,100/m2 for green walls ? is far higher than alternatives.

And while adoption is driven by a handful of cities in the developed world, growth in the developing world will depend on the global economic market.

The report forecasts more building material suppliers will develop building-integrated vegetation materials and create special grades of waterproof membranes and geosynthetic fabrics suited for building-integrated vegetation. Products will improve as the market becomes more mainstream and more performance standards are established.

In other green roof news, new research funded by the UK?s Royal Horticultural Society and Portugal?s Fundacao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia found green-roof plants other than sedums may help cool air temperatures more effectively, Energy Manager Today reports. The study looked at the possibility of using different plants ? sedum, Stachys byzantina, Hedera hibernica and Bergenia cordifolia ? for green roofs. Sedum is currently the most popular, according to RHS.

In the blink of an eye: Distracted consumers are most likely to remember ads with subtle variations

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Consumers are more likely to remember an ad they?ve seen repeatedly if one element in the ad changes location from one exposure to the next, according to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research.

?Consumers are bombarded with thousands of advertisements daily, are increasingly multitasking, and are preoccupied with everyday activities. The likelihood that they will devote their full attention to any one specific message is getting smaller every day. What impact can an ad have if consumers pay virtually no attention to it?? write authors Stewart Shapiro (University of Delaware) and Jesper H. Nielsen (University of Arizona).

Even when consumers pay very limited attention, advertising can succeed through repetition. When consumers are exposed to a print ad, an image of the ad is stored in their memory and this image becomes clearer with each exposure to the ad. As this memory becomes clearer, preference for the ad increases. Notably, this occurs even if prior exposures to the ad are extremely brief and a consumer devotes much of their attention to something other than the ad.

In a series of experiments, the authors found that this effect may actually be enhanced if one ad element such as the brand logo or product depiction changes location within an ad from one exposure to the next. Under conditions of limited attention, making subtle changes to an ad over repeated exposures may in fact be better than repeating the exact same ad or altering more ad elements from one exposure to the next. For instance, a company could create a more effective ad by placing their brand logo in the bottom left corner the first time it is shown, and then placing it in the bottom right corner of the otherwise unchanged ad the next time it is shown.

?Companies are still learning how to make the most of advertisements that are viewed quickly as a consumer searches for something else on a web page or in a magazine. Subtle changes to ads viewed repeatedly can boost advertising effectiveness in increasingly cluttered environments visited by increasingly unfocused consumers,? the authors conclude.
