Apple?s new iPad mini has left mobile gaming firms bamboozled and wondering whether it?s a phone or a tablet. Charles Cohen, CEO of Probability, told CalvinAyre.com that he?s still waiting to work out if the new device is simply a ?iPad shrunken down or the iPhone scaled up? or if the device will ?lend itself to a whole new approach?
The new device is aiming to derail a number of dangerous competitors such as Google and Amazon that have chosen to focus on smaller screened tablets than the iPad. Bad news for them is that Apple reneged on their earlier plan not to develop a smaller tablet. The price point of the iPad mini, starting at ?269, is slightly more than its competitors, although Probability CEO Cohen told CalvinAyre.com that he doesn?t envisage that being a problem.
?The price is a bit higher than I expected but it?s still a good entry level device and it?s much more attractive than the smaller, lighter and cheaper tabs out there at the moment,? he said. ?There are millions for whom this will be their first personal computing device and many more for whom it will replace the home desktop or PC.?
If you look at the tech-specs it?s clear this is anything but a cheap knock-off of the iPad though. It?s packing 7.9-inches of LED-backlit glory and weighs in at just 308g ? 53 percent lighter than the iPad ? and is 7.2mm thin. Many men will tell you it?s not about the size, it?s the way you use it, and the mini iPad could definitely make that boast. The powerful A5 chip means similar performance to its older, chunkier brother and it comes with 10-hours worth of battery. An HD camera on the back and 5 Megapixel one on the front is fairly standard for Apple tablets with WiFi, Siri and the new Lightning Connector coming as standard.
Cohen is salivating at the opportunities the device could open up, and added: ?We think this device could be huge for us (pun intended) particularly in the key battle for ?sofa time? where most mobile gambling takes place.?
There?s nothing quite like the excitement that surrounds an Apple device being released and the iPad mini will be no different. How mobile gaming firms harness the new screen will be interesting and even more noteworthy than that will be the effect the device has on other mobile operators such as Google and Amazon.
