Pinedorado in Cambria: Parade, car show among weekend's festivities

It?s time for the annual Pinedorado celebration in Cambria, with a parade from East to West villages, the big Sunday car show, a new Monday music fest, plus classic carnival games and kiddie rides, a barbecue, many ears of fresh corn on the cob, food booths and, most of all, time for people to reconnect.

This year?s Pinedorado theme is ?The Good Ol? Days.?

Most festivities are held at or near the grounds to the west of the Veterans Memorial Building, 1000 Main St. Pinedorado is hosted by the founding Lions Club, with the assistance of other nonprofit groups. American Legion Post No. 432 again is welcoming the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Band from Southern California, back for its second year in the Pinedorado parade. This year?s event will be the third in a row featuring a Marine band.

The free Pinedorado parade has nearly 70 entries and several bands, including high school units from Atascadero, Templeton and San Luis Obispo. It starts at 9:30 a.m. today. The grand marshals are members of the pioneer Soto family, seventh-generation Cambrians who trace their California lineage to the de Anza expedition in 1776.

All proceeds from the Lions Pinedorado efforts go back to the community, in scholarships, grants to the Cambria Teen Center and donations to other nonprofit groups, service clubs and causes.

Parking

Parking can be a Pinedorado pain, especially before and after the parade and during Sunday?s car show. The Veterans Memorial Building parking lot will be closed throughout the weekend.

Attendees are encouraged to carpool, walk or ride bikes to the parade, anything to reduce the crush and rush to find places to put vehicles.

At 9 a.m. Saturday, Burton Drive from Eton Drive to Main Street and the full length of Main Street will close to through traf fic and on-street parking.

Parking is available in the Rodeo Grounds area west of the Burton Drive bridge, at the J&J Heller Cambria Dog Park on Main Street at Santa Rosa Creek Road, and west of Highway 1 at Cambria Drive.

Car show

The sixth annual car show runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Veterans Memorial Building parking lot and on Cambria Drive. There will be live music. Awards will be handed out at 3 p.m.

Car show Chairman Nate Fearonce expects at least 140 cars in the show in 20 classes.

The roster of notable cars includes two 1948 Thames panel trucks (English Fords), a 2005 GTO (Australian Holden) and a 1961 supercharged Corvair Rampside pickup.

Barbecue

Barbecued chicken and Harris Ranch top-sirloin meals are a Pinedorado highlight, served starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday. This year?s addition to the menu is a steak sandwich. Corn on the cob, pie, burgers, hot dogs and other foods, along with Firestone beer and local gourmet wines, are available.

Raffle

Prizes donated by local area businesses and artists will be awarded all day on all three days. Grand prizes will be awarded at 2 p.m. Monday, including an original Sally Seago painting, a collection of local wines and a $500 gift certificate.

A silent auction will be held at the information booth all weekend.

Monday music

The ?Live Music for Locals? entertainment has been added ?by popular demand,? Wilson said.

From noon to 2 p.m. on Monday, the band Devil?s Dandy Dogs will entertain. From 2 to 4 p.m., Jill Knight and her group will take to the stage.

? Waffle Breakfast Saturday, 7 to 10 a.m. Joslyn Recreation Center, 950 Main St., Cambria. Waffles, sausage, strawberries, melon, juice, coffee, tea. $8 ($4 children 12 and under).

? 5-K Fun Run. 7 a.m. registration, 7:45 a.m. race. ? ?Golf? tournament, 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, at home of Jon and Cathleen Scott on Warren Road.
